Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have made history after defeating Japan 2-1 to win the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, securing the country’s first-ever title in the competition and becoming the first African nation to lift the trophy.

The Nigerian youngsters produced a memorable performance in Saturday’s final at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat, Morocco, overcoming their Japanese opponents through goals from Awawu Bashiru and Oluebube Umejiaku to claim the historic title.

The Flamingos took control of the encounter in the 39th minute when Bashiru unleashed a long-range effort that slipped past Japanese goalkeeper Kou Kadowaki to give Nigeria a crucial first-half advantage.

Nigeria wasted little time extending their lead after the restart, with Umejiaku producing a composed finish just two minutes into the second half. The forward expertly chipped the ball over the advancing Kadowaki to put the Flamingos 2-0 ahead and strengthen their grip on the final.

Japan, however, refused to surrender, mounting a late challenge in search of a comeback. Fuki Ito pulled one back in the 80th minute, setting up a tense closing period as the Japanese pushed forward for an equaliser.

But Nigeria remained resolute defensively, holding on to their advantage until the final whistle to seal a historic 2-1 victory and send the Nigerian contingent into celebration.

The triumph represents a landmark achievement for Nigerian football, particularly the women’s game, as the Flamingos finally convert their long-standing presence in the competition into a world title.

Nigeria had previously recorded their best finish at the tournament with a third-place finish in 2022. Their victory over Japan now takes the country to an unprecedented milestone in the history of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

The achievement also makes Nigeria the first African country to win the women’s edition of the FIFA U-17 World Cup, marking a significant breakthrough for the continent on the global women’s football stage. The Flamingos’ triumph in Morocco will stand as a defining moment for the young Nigerian players, whose performance has delivered a historic world title and added another landmark chapter to the country’s football history
