Mexico Qualify for 2026 World Cup Knockout Stage After 1-0 Win Over South Korea

Co-hosts Mexico became the first nation to secure a place in the knockout stages of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after edging South Korea 1-0 in a tense Group A encounter in Guadalajara.

A moment of confusion in the South Korean defence proved decisive as Mexico maintained their perfect start to the tournament and confirmed their place in the last 32 as group winners.

The breakthrough arrived five minutes into the second half when goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu spilled the ball following a collision with teammate Lee Gi-hyuk. Alert to the opportunity, midfielder Luis Romo reacted quickest to tap into an empty net and spark wild celebrations among the home supporters.

Mexico had struggled to find rhythm during a lacklustre first half and were met with boos from sections of the crowd at the interval. However, Javier Aguirre’s men emerged with greater urgency after the break and eventually found the breakthrough their dominance deserved.

South Korea pushed hard for an equaliser and nearly snatched one late in the contest. In the 87th minute, Cho Gue-sung’s close-range header was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Raul Rangel, who then showed remarkable reflexes to deny Yang Hyun-jun on the rebound.

Earlier, South Korea captain Son Heung-min thought he had beaten Rangel with a clever chip, but Edson Alvarez raced back to clear the effort off the line before the assistant referee’s flag went up for offside.

Mexico came close to extending their advantage in the 75th minute when Raul Jimenez tested Kim from a tight angle, but the South Korean goalkeeper responded with a smart save. Substitute Obed Vargas also threatened late on, forcing Kim into another impressive diving stop with a powerful drive.

The victory ensures Mexico finish top of Group A and guarantees that Aguirre’s side will remain in Mexico City for both their last-32 match and a potential last-16 encounter. The co-hosts could even find themselves on a collision course with England should Thomas Tuchel’s team top their group and progress through the opening knockout round.

Despite the defeat, South Korea remain well placed to qualify for the next phase after opening their campaign with victory over the Czech Republic. Their fate remains in their own hands heading into a crucial final group match against South Africa in Monterrey.

Mexico will conclude their group-stage campaign against the Czech Republic at the same time in Mexico City, but with qualification already secured, the hosts can now turn their attention to mounting a deeper run in front of their passionate supporters.

For Mexico, the dream of a memorable home World Cup continues to gather momentum, with Luis Romo’s opportunistic strike ensuring they become the first team to book a place in the knockout rounds of the 2026 tournament.
