John Fashanu Arrested, Detained Over 10 Million Naira Land Scam

John Fashanu held in Nigerian hell-hole jail pen with 200 other prisoners after being accused of land scam

The former Wimbledon and England star spent two days locked up with 200 others as officers investigated claims he acted as a fixer in a scam to sell plots that were not for sale.

John Fashanu was left in a Nigerian jail pen with 200 others after being held over an alleged dodgy land deal, police have revealed.

The former Wimbledon and England star spent two days locked up as officers investigated claims he acted as a fixer in a scam to sell plots that were not for sale.

He was arrested at his home on the Sun City Estate, in the capital Abuja, and taken in on suspicion of “criminal conspiracy”, detectives said.

It is alleged that earlier this year the former I’m a Celeb favourite acted for a friend looking to buy land.

The pal claims he was told by Fashanu, 54, of two contacts who would help with buying “forgotten lands” – plots owned by chiefs that the state were unaware of.

He was allegedly given £23,000 in cash to fix the deal with his “boys”. But when the new “owner” went to claim his land, it is alleged he found it not for sale and not in the hands of local chiefs.

Fash, who once fronted Nigeria’s version of Deal or No Deal, was taken before a superintendent last week to explain himself before being left in a packed pen, police sources said.

Officers are now looking for the other two men said to be involved. It is believed they are still in Nigeria, where the average yearly wage is £1,600 (660,000 Nairi).

Fashanu has agreed to pay the money back, although he denies wrongdoing.

A source close to the former Gladiators presenter said last night: “This is a business deal between friends that has gone south and the police were asked to basically mediate.

“It will all be sorted very quickly. It was just a business deal.”

It is understood Fashanu was released after surrendering his British passport and agreeing to pay back a first instalment of the money.

Sources said he looked to sell some of his cars to raise the cash as he waited for funds from his numerous business interests to clear in his bank account.

Fashanu has agreed to pay back the money paid for the land

The London-born celebrity’s Nigerian barrister Hyp Egbune confirmed he had this week paid a second instalment of the money owed.

He said: “The matter is being resolved. He won’t be charged to court is my understanding.

“We are repaying the money and that should settle this matter.

“The person who made the complaint has been a mutual friend for quite a number of years and we are more interested in keeping that relationship so we are making amends. We hope to do that as soon as we can. It is quite a lot of money so we hope to do it as soon as we can. We want to have this resolved.”

Nigerian police Deputy Inspector General Hyacinth Dagala said: “John Fashanu was arrested on July 17 in connection with an allegation of criminal conspiracy and obtaining the sum of N9,550,000 [Nigerian Naira] under false pretence.

“He was granted administrative bail on July 18 but because of his inability to produce the requisite surety on that day, he remained in detention until July 19 when he was released.”

Fashanu is a respected businessman and philanthropist, who now has the grand title of Ambassador in his adopted nation. Once said to be worth upwards of £6million, he spends his days in Nigeria cutting business deals, hanging out with politicians and fighting to stop people trafficking.

He and third wife, TV personality Rachel Bakam, are regulars on the social scene at glitzy parties.

Last year, the couple were given chieftaincy titles. Fashanu became Ofia-Afulu-Agu of Okwe Kingdom (meaning The Forest that Contains the Lion) and his wife Ugo-Di-Namba of Okwe Kingdom (Beautiful Eagle Queen from Another Kingdom).

Fash has been a UN ambassador for Nigeria, a Unicef goodwill ambassador for 53 African countries and a former board member of the Nigeria Football Association.

His lawyer claims Fashanu and the complainant are ‘friends’

During his playing days, in 1997, he was acquitted in a high-profile match-fixing trial along with goalkeepers Bruce Grobbelaar and Hans Segers. In 2015 he was arrested over an unlicensed gun found in his Nigerian house during a police raid. He ended up paying a fine.

Born to a Guyanan mother and Nigerian father, Fashanu became a Barnado’s boy when they split. He was then fostered in Norfolk.

His first marriage, to model Melissa Kassa-Mapsi, ended in divorce in 2004 after nine years. They had two children. In 2015 he went through a messy split in Nigeria, claiming wife Abigail Onyekwelu tried to knife him.

Fash had already suffered heartbreak when his brother Justin, Britain’s first openly gay professional footballer, hanged himself in 1998.

He later told of his remorse for disowning him because of his homosexuality and paying him £75,000 hush-money not to come out.

Embattled Trump faces Republican revolt, staff infighting

US President Donald Trump arrives to present the Medal of Valor to the first responders of the June 14 shooting against members of the Republican Congressional Baseball team, where US House Majority Whip Representative Steve Scalise, Republican of Louisiana, was shot, in the East Room of the White House in Washington, DC on July 27, 2017. / AFP PHOTO / SAUL LOEB

Donald Trump suffered yet another humiliating blow Friday as a small group of Republican rebels dealt him a stinging legislative defeat on health care, adding to the woes of a White House riven by vicious infighting.

The billionaire president lashed out at Republican senators who defied his threats and barbs to vote against health care reform, which experts predicted would have left millions more Americans without coverage.

“3 Republicans and 48 Democrats let the American people down. As I said from the beginning, let ObamaCare implode, then deal. Watch!” Trump tweeted after the dramatic vote in the early hours of Friday.

The party rebellion — led by Senators Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and John McCain — is a deeply ominous sign for Trump, whose political brand is defined by his dealmaking acumen and a take-no-prisoners approach to politics.

For months, Trump has kept skeptical Republicans in line with an implicit threat that he would turn his diehard supporters against them.

Republican lawmakers had privately worried that even an angry tweet against them could spell disaster at the next election.

But there are growing signs those threats are losing potency, when Republicans not only killed efforts to dismantle Obamacare, but joined Democrats in supporting a new sanctions regime against Russia.

To veto or not to veto?
The sanctions bill — which also includes measures targeted at North Korea and Iran — is designed to restrict Trump’s ability to lift punitive measures on Moscow.

Trump now faces a choice between swallowing a bill he deeply opposed and refusing to do so — a move that would intensify suspicions about his attitude to Russia and likely bring a humiliating veto override.

Trump’s administration and his presidential campaign are under investigation by a special prosecutor and several Congressional committees over whether they colluded with Moscow to tilt the 2016 presidential election.

The new sanctions appear to have thwarted Trump’s efforts to build better relations with Russia.

Russia’s foreign ministry on Friday announced countermeasures, ordering Washington to reduce its diplomatic staff and seizing two US facilities.

Moscow ordered the US to reduce its diplomatic presence in Russia to 455 diplomats and staff and also barred it from using a Moscow summer house and storage facility.

Moscow complained that the “new sanctions bill showed with all clarity that relations with Russia have fallen hostage to the domestic political struggle in the US.”

Infighting
If the view from Trump’s White House looks bleak, the view inside is no better.

This week saw top staff in open warfare with each other, as they fought to get Trump’s ear.

White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci launched a searing foul-mouthed attack on his most senior colleagues.

In an eye-watering exchange with a New Yorker reporter, the fast-talking Scaramucci described chief of staff Reince Priebus as a “paranoid schizophrenic” and chief White House strategist Steve Bannon as trying to build his own brand off Trump.

Scaramucci, a millionaire New York financier, arrived at the White House vowing to serve Trump’s interest and right a badly faltering administration.

He did not apologize for the tirade, but said he would try to clean up his language in the future.

“I sometimes use colorful language. I will refrain in this arena but not give up the passionate fight for @realDonaldTrump’s agenda,” he tweeted.

On Friday, Trump will try to turn the page with a trip to the New York suburbs to talk about his administration’s battle against the violent street gang MS-13.

He also will likely be cheered by data showing the US economy gathered speed in the second quarter, with gross domestic product up 2.6 percent in the April-June period.

Dangote Remains Africa’s Richest as Bezos Overtakes Bill Gates

Dangote Remains Africa Richest as Bezos Overtakes Bill Gates

Dangote remains Africa’s richest

The President, Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, saw his net worth increase by $162m to $16.2bn on Thursday, as the Founder of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, briefly overtook Microsoft’s Bill Gates to claim the title of the world’s richest person.

According to a real-time billionaires’ index compiled by Forbes, the net worth of the Chairman of Globacom, Dr. Mike Adenuga, rose by $7m to $6.2bn.

The net worth of the Founder and Executive Chairman, Famfa Oil Limited, Mrs. Folorunsho Alakija, was unchanged at $1.6bn.

Bezos leapfrogged Gates, who has been the richest man on the planet since 2013, after a rise in the share price of Amazon ahead of its latest results due later on Thursday.

According to the Forbes’ index, the rise pushed the value of Bezos’s fortune to $91bn, compared with Gates’ wealth of $90bn.

But as Amazon shares fell back, Gates regained the top spot.

Their riches are calculated on the share prices of their respective companies and at the current values, Bezos’s stake is twice as big as the carmaker Ford.

Amazon shares have soared this year, making the company worth more than $500bn and boosting Bezos’s wealth, as he owns 17 per cent of the company, according to The Guardian.

He also has a number of other investments, including in Google, Uber, Twitter and airbnb, worth more than $5bn.

At the start of 2017, Bezos was ranked the fourth richest in the world, behind Gates, the investor Warren Buffett and Amancio Ortega, who founded Inditex, the company behind retailer Zara.     Punch Nigeria

GTBank Leadership Tussle Deepens

GTBank Leadership Tussle Deepens

GTBank leadership tussle deepens

The bank’s destiny had hinged on the tripod stand-the three owners. The handwriting had been on the wall only that it has cleverly been whittled down amicably by concerned friends, colleagues and associates of the principal actors in the current emerging leadership crisis that are threatening to rock the very foundation of the thriving financial institution, Guarantee Trust Bank Plc.

It might be of no consequence at this juncture to recall the skirmishes that reared its head shortly before and after the death of the immediate past MD/CEO, Tayo Aderinokun few years back but the court case instituted against the bank by the eight year-old daughter of the deceased MD, Miss Oluwatise Aderinokun on how the bank allegedly manipulating her father’s major shares in the bank, has suddenly given rise to yet another round of face-offs among the top hierarchy of the bank. The actors involved are Mr. Fola Adeola, the pioneer MD/CEO of the bank, the current MD, Mr. Segun Agbaje and a couple of principal stakeholders in the bank. The contention has been that since Agbaje took over the mantle of leadership at the bank, directly or indirectly, he has been effecting certain measures that have not been favourable to the Fola Adeola and Aderinokun nests of the bank. To the extent that most sensitive management positions are now being occupied by some of Agbaje’s goons in the bank, much to the distaste of certain major shareholders in the bank, especially Fola Adeola, who is believed to be the principal architect of the bank at inception, of course in alliance with the late Tayo Aderinokun.
The assumption in many circles is that, Agbaje who joined the bank in 1991 as a foundation staff, and rose rapidly to executive directorship status before ultimately assuming the head honcho rank, couldn’t have been muscling much executive powers to the detriment of the founding partners, whether dead or alive. But as the internal wrangling raged on, albeit in under currents and silently being handled by the concerned parties, the little Oluwatishe Aderionokun court case has simply shown that the matter is far from being settled, as it has opened up more wounds than closed them up. Contemptuous as the case may be now, observers in the financial circuit are beginning to read a riot act from different corners of the divide. With the tenure of Agbaje gradually coming to a statutory end as the MD, some senior staffers of the bank who are presumably not in sync with Agbaje’s management style, are already planning to turn in their resignation, before the long arm of Agbaje catches up with them in the unfolding super power tussle in the bank.
Their assumed contention is that Agbaje may use them as the sacrificial lamb by checking them out, within his executive powers, before his tenure lapses. On the other hand, the de facto founder of the bank, Adeola, is allegedly also not said to be taking the matter lightly, since he might probably have an upper hand in who succeeds Agbaje, and as such, might bring on someone who will come in to come and clean the Augean stable, purportedly created by Agbaje.
Invariably, the next MD might be used by Adeola to equally flush out known disciples of Agbaje upon his exit. The situation also might get more complex, if going by rotation, the next MD after Agbaje’s successor will automatically come from the Aderionkun nest, and the witch-hunting exercise might just continue. Perhaps this is why the case of little Oluwatishe is not being taken with kids’ gloves by her mother, Mrs. Salamotu Aderionkun.
Sources believe that if the substance and grounds of the case are decided in their favour, then the substantial shares of Aderinokun’s in the bank will stand them in good stead for a deciding factor in critical decisive matters that concern who gets what in the bank, especially when it comes to the turn of the next CEO of the bank at the appointed time.
All these are still conjectural, but industry watchers remain undaunted in their belief that this is where the rather unpleasant matter is grinding to, and the verdict or judgment of the Federal High Court will go a long way in giving a breather to the scenario. Financial experts are also trite in their aversion that this is common in many jointly-financed companies, as the death of one or more principal founders/partners often leads to premature or total collapse of the organization. For the records and even to whet your appetite on how the whole unpleasant matter reared its ugly head, certain faceless people and rabble-rousers had years back gone to town with the unfounded rumour that there was no love lost between Adeola and Agbaje. They had claimed then that the two financial guru were dangerously poised to tear at each other like loaded guns. They predicated their argument on the frosty relationship that ensued between Adeola and late Tayo Aderinokun with whom he founded the bank. The duo allegedly fell out with each other and subsequently related like cat and dog until Aderinokun unfortunately passed away. Agbaje however, incurred Adeola’s detest, courtesy his known chummy relationship with late Aderinokun. The current GTBank M.D was very close to Adeola’s late partner and thus became his foe by default. No sooner did Aderinokun die, did Adeola and Agbaje acknowledge their undisguised contempt for each other, they claimed.
The relationship between Adeola and Agbaje has reportedly deteriorated to the extent that there are fears in high-powered circuits of the banking sector that if eventually Adeola succeeds Godwin Emefiele as the CBN governor, as it was being touted then, he would gun for Agbaje, subject him to a tough inquiry and make mincemeat of him. For now, no one knows where the matter will gravitate to but the tell tales of an imminent cold war among principal stakeholders are daily being relayed within the bank. It is that unsavoury for the once ‘guaranteed bank’ whose esteemed customers might be the ultimate end-losers if the unexpected happens.    Source: Asa News Online

The Party EXCO in Mushin Local Government further recommended to the State Chapter the expulsion of Mr Muiz Banire from the party, he said.
It would be recalled that leaders and members of All Progressives Congress APC, last Tuessday (11th July) held a peaceful protest to demand for the expulsion of the National Legal Adviser of the Party, Mr Muiz Banire SAN from the Party based on his anti-Party activities and in accordance with ARTICLE 21 of the constitution of the Party.
Some of the grounds for the request are, alleged anti-Party activities such as causing a Legal Representative to disavow the Party in a Law suit before the elections and working towards the electoral failure of the Party.
Other anti-party activities which Banire was accused of before and during the last local Government elections include; Inciting the public against the interest of the Party; Falsely accusing the Party of imposition in public thereby bringing the Party into disrepute; Disobeying and causing others to disobey lawful directives of the Party Causing disaffection within the Party.

The party also accused Banire of causing his supporters to disrupt the peaceful process of efficient organisation of the Party, particularly in respect of the campaigns of candidates of the Party and causing fear and apprehension among Party loyalists during the elections. Source The capital NG

Buhari welcomes Ajimobi

President Muhammadu Buhari, beaming with smiles and life,  has received in audience seven Nigerian governors who left Nigeria Tuesday night to visit him in London, where he has been recuperating since 8 May.

The governors were led by Governor Abdulaziz Yari, chairman of the Governors Forum.

The six other governors are: Dave Umahi of Ebonyi state, Udom Emmanuel, (Akwa Ibom), Abiola Ajimobi(Oyo), Abdullahi Ganduja(Kano) and Samuel Ortom, Benue State and Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno state.

It was the second goodwill visit by Nigerian political leaders.

President Buhari had on Sunday in London received a delegation of All Progressives Congress (APC) which comprised national leadership of the party and two of its governors—Nasir El-Rufai and Rochas Okorocha.

Okorocha had reported that President Buhari remains his old self when the team  met him at Abuja House, in London.

President Buhari will return home when his doctors certify him to make the home journey.

Governor Yari: leads six governors to Buhari in London

Gov. Abdul’aziz Yari of Zamfara will be leading a seven-man delegation of Governors’ Forum on a goodwill visit to President Muhammadu Buhari in London.

President Buhari had on Sunday in London received a delegation of All Progressives Congress (APC) which comprised national leadership of the party and two of its governors—Nasir El-Rufai and Rochas Okorocha.

However, Malam Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, told State House correspondents that a fresh team comprising Governors of Zamfara, Ebonyi, Kano, Borno, Benue, Akwa Ibom and Oyo would be visiting the President in London on Tuesday.

Shehu briefed the correspondents alongside the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity Femi Adesina and Mr Laolu Akande, the Senior Special Assistant to the President (Office of the Vice-President).

According to him, the governors will be meeting the President on Wednesday in London.

“The delegation is being led by the governor of Zamfara, who is the chairman of the Governors’ Forum and in that delegation there will be the governors of Ebonyi, Kano, Borno, Benue, Akwa Ibom and Oyo states.

“They will leave tonight and make an early morning arrival in the UK,’’ he said.

In his contribution, Femi Adesina said the selection of members of the delegation was done by the Governors’ Forum.

He dismissed the insinuation that Gov. Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti, a renowned critic of President Buhari’s administration, was deliberately excluded from the trip.

“The selection was not done by the government. It was done by the Governors’ Forum and you can see that the delegation is headed by Gov. Yari, who is chairman of that forum.

“So, that question should then go to the forum,’’ he added.

According to Adesina, the president, who is recuperating very fast, preferred receiving delegations rather than addressing the nation through broadcast.

Adesina stated that the two ministers recently confirmed by the Senate would soon be sworn-in

In his remarks, Laolu Akande revealed that the report on the inter-ministerial committee on the Ogoni Clean-up would be released next week.

“Next week there is going to be a follow up meeting between the Acting President and the PANDEF.

“You will recall that last November the President held a meeting with the leaders of PANDEF where issues of Niger Delta development was discussed in which the Acting President embarked on the visit to the states of the Niger Delta.

“And since then the president asked that an inter-ministerial committee be composed led by the Vice President to look at all the issues, specifically using the PANDEF demand as the take off point.

”Regarding Ogoni clean up, they are also going to give an update of what has been happening. For instance, the coordinating team that was set up for the Ogoni clean up conducted health impact assessment, they have done salt test, water test, they have hired a number of sons and daughters of Ogoni who are trained on environmental sciences as technical assistants, I think about 15 of them.

“In the next few weeks they are going to go back to Geneva where a wholistic road map on the clean up itself will be concluded with the international partners.”

The presidential aide announced that the ground breaking of the first set of the Modular Refineries would take place  in August.

He also disclosed that the Maritime University would be opened in October, as the Vice Chancellor had been asked to bring a take-off budget for the institution.

According to him, the National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved a number of courses for the university.

Ogun 2019: Amosun Goes Berserk!!! Demolishes Yayi’s Maternal Home in Kemta, Itoku Abeokuta.

Ogun 2019: Amosun Goes Berserk!!! Demolishes Yayi’s Maternal Home in Kemta, Itoku Abeokuta.

Amosun allegedly destroyed Yayi’s maternal home in Abeokuta

The aftermath of Kemta Borehole commissioning and Itoku market heads visit to Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola aka YAYI, Amosun begins full scale demolition of Kemta Itoku kampala market, thecitypulsenews.com   reports.

In what can be tagged pure and reckless political victimisation, Ogun State government acting under the instruction of Governor Ibikunle Amosun has moved heavy bulldozing machines to Senator Solomon Adeola aka Yayi’s maternal ancestral home at Kemta, Itoku in Abeokuta.

thecitypulsenews.com   stated  that aside being uncomfortable with the recent positive political steps being taken by Yayi and his supporters, there are also two critical developments which is connected to the governor’s show of hostility against Yayi.

First is the borehole that was commissioned for a community use on behalf of Senator Yayi .Secondly, a courtesy visit by some notable market leaders from a popular market in Abeokuta (Itoku) are believed to form the major basis for this renewed hostile behaviour of Governor Ibikunle Amosun against Senator Adeola.

Just last week, we got wind of the governor’s insensitive and anti masses plan, after some patriotic and concerned group of individuals supporting Senator Yayi’s governorship aspiration bid and erected a community borehole and situated it around his maternal lineage compound.

At the end of the commissioning exercise, the governor drove down to the area in the evening and hinted people around the community of his intention to demolish some unidentified structures, part of which Yayi’s maternal ancestral compound was also listed.

In another development, there are feelers that the Governor was visibly disturbed with the recent visit of some notable Itoku market heads who expressed their willingness and readiness to support Senator Yayi’s governorship aspiration.

As at the time filing in this report, there is clear indication that a bulldozer machine have been moved to the site and is currently pulling down various houses at Kemta, including the one in question.
