Tinubu Leads Nigerian Tributes to Rev. Jesse Jackson: A Global Champion of Justice Who ‘Cracked the Ceiling’ for Obama

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid a heartfelt and personal tribute to American civil rights legend Rev. Jesse Jackson, mourning the passing of the iconic Baptist preacher and activist who died peacefully at age 84 on February 17, 2026.

In an emotional message released Tuesday, Tinubu joined global leaders and the American people in grieving the loss of a towering figure whose lifelong fight for equality reshaped the United States and inspired movements worldwide.

“I join the rest of the world and the people of the United States of America to mourn the passing of civil rights icon and renowned Baptist preacher, Reverend Jesse Jackson, who passed away this morning at the age of 84,” the President said.

Tinubu described Jackson as a “servant-leader” who carried forward Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s unfinished work, dedicating his life to uplifting Black people, the oppressed, and the voiceless.

“Reverend Jackson was a servant-leader who captured the global imagination as a young activist… fighting for the dignity of black people, the oppressed, and the voiceless in the United States and across the world,” he said.

Drawing from his own experiences as a student in Chicago during the 1970s, Tinubu reflected on witnessing Jackson’s impact firsthand.

“I witnessed firsthand how, as a faithful servant of God and humanity, he pointed the arc of American society to the great promise of the American dream,” the nation’s leader added.

The President highlighted Jackson’s groundbreaking presidential runs in 1984 and 1988, crediting them with paving the way for Barack Obama’s historic 2008 victory.

“When Barack Obama broke the glass ceiling as the first Black President in America, it was Reverend Jackson who first inflicted the cracks on the ceiling in 1984 and again in 1988,” Tinubu disclosed.

Beyond America, Jackson’s influence reached Africa—he fiercely opposed apartheid in South Africa, campaigned for Nelson Mandela’s release, and supported other African National Congress leaders.

Tinubu noted Jackson’s special bond with Nigeria: as a supporter of pro-democracy struggles during military rule and later as President Bill Clinton’s special envoy to Nigeria and Africa in the late 1990s, where he championed civil liberties and strengthened Africa’s voice in Washington through ties with the Congressional Black Caucus.

“Reverend Jackson lived a remarkable life as a strong voice for the universal ideals of justice and human progress,” Tinubu said, adding that even in his later years amid illness, “his voice still resonated, urging us never to stop fighting for what is right and never to lose faith in humanity.”

The President concluded with a solemn prayer: “May the great and noble soul of Reverend Jackson find eternal rest.”

Jackson’s death has prompted widespread tributes, underscoring his enduring legacy as a bridge-builder for racial justice, democracy, and human dignity across continents.

Aliko Dangote Foundation Spends N1.5bn on Bayero University’s PG students

Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF), chaired by Africa’s wealthiest man, Aliko Dangote, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) worth N1.5 billion with Bayero University Kano (BUK), for post-graduate students of the Dangote Business School located in the tertiary institution.

The MoU, which was signed at the main auditorium of the Dangote Business School, Kano on Tuesday, provides a sum of ₦300 million annually over five years as scholarship awards to all eligible MBA, entrepreneurship, and management postgraduate students.

Under the MoU, jointly signed by Member, Board of Trustees of the ADF, Hajiya Mariya Aliko Dangote and the Vice Chancellor of the Bayero University, Prof. Haruna Musa, each beneficiary will receive ₦150,000 per session, beginning with the 2024/25 academic session. This is equivalent to 50 per cent of the current N300,000 fee paid by the post-graduate students. There are 1,225 students in the Business School (696 fresh and 529 returning students).

At the event, which was well attended by the Faculty of the BUK, top ADF officials, and scores of post-graduate students, Aliko Dangote, Chairman, Aliko Dangote Foundation and Group President, Dangote Industries Limited, represented by ADF Board Trustee, Mariya Aliko Dangote, noted, “Our vision at the Foundation is to build human capital that translates into economic opportunity. Strengthening business and entrepreneurship education is critical to turning knowledge into enterprise, innovation, and jobs. This scholarship deepens our commitment to Dangote Business School by investing directly in the next generation of business leaders and change-makers.

Prof. Haruna Musa, Vice Chancellor of Bayero University Kano, who lauded the initiative, said, “This support comes at a critical time for many families. Beyond financial relief, it strengthens the Business School’s role as a centre for developing entrepreneurial and management talent, particularly for women who are increasingly taking leadership roles in enterprise.

Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Khalid Bababubu, who is into manufacturing and specialises in MBA, Finance and Investment, thanked the Aliko Dangote Foundation chaired by Aliko Dangote for his immense support. “We are happy to be beneficiaries of this initiative. Education is the bedrock of national development, and we will not take this scholarship for granted.”

The initiative, titled ‘MHF Dangote Graduate Business Scholarship’  marks a strategic shift in ADF’s long-standing partnership with the Business School, transitioning from infrastructure support to direct investment in people and enterprise leadership development.

This programme is distinct from ADF’s recently announced nationwide STEM education interventions. While the STEM initiatives focus on science and technology pathways at secondary and undergraduate levels across Nigeria, the Dangote Business School scholarship is a postgraduate, institution-anchored investment designed to strengthen entrepreneurship, management capacity, and enterprise leadership.

Since the Dangote Business School complex was commissioned in 2018, ADF has supported the facility maintenance at the school. The new scholarship represents a deliberate shift from hard infrastructure to soft infrastructure, investing directly in the people who will drive enterprise, job creation, and economic growth.

The programme covers both new and returning students. Newly admitted students will receive automatic tuition reductions during registration and returning students who have already paid in full will receive rebates. The ₦300 million allocation is structured to cover all eligible postgraduate students based on current enrolment capacity.

Any unutilised balance in the first year will be retained within the Dangote Business School development envelope to strengthen learning infrastructure and digital academic capacity, ensuring continued enhancement of the academic environment.

The mission of the Aliko Dangote Foundation is to enhance opportunities for social change through strategic investments that improve health and wellbeing, promote quality education, and broaden empowerment opportunities for individuals and communities.

Bayero University Kano, one of Nigeria’s foremost higher education institutions, is committed to excellence in teaching, learning, and research. The University’s Dangote Business School is a centre of excellence for postgraduate education in business, entrepreneurship, and management. Read More

Zulum Rolls Out Ramadan Relief for 300,000 Borno Households, Warns Against Diversion

MAIDUGURI — Governor Babagana Umara Zulum on Tuesday flagged off the distribution of Ramadan palliatives to 300,000 households across Borno State’s 27 local government areas, marking one of the largest food support interventions in the state in recent years.

The ceremony, held at Ramat Square, is designed to cushion the economic hardship faced by vulnerable residents during the holy month of Ramadan.

Under the initiative, each beneficiary household will receive one bag of rice, one bag of millet, and 10 kilograms of sugar to sustain families throughout the fasting period.

Addressing members of the distribution committee and beneficiaries, Governor Zulum emphasized transparency and fairness, warning that any diversion of the relief items would attract strict sanctions.

“These items are not for sale. They are not for your friends or family members who do not need them,” he said. “They are for the widow, the orphan, the internally displaced, the farmer whose fields have not fully recovered, and the daily wage earner struggling to make ends meet.”

The governor also directed that the gesture be extended to Christian residents observing Lent, which coincides with Ramadan this year.

“This gesture will also touch the non-Muslims who are fasting during Lent,” Zulum added.

Zulum’s administration has maintained a tradition of supporting Christian communities during festive periods, including distributing food items at Christmas and providing free transportation for non-indigenous Christians travelling to celebrate with their families.

In separate remarks, Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan and Secretary to the State Government Bukar Tijani commended the governor for what they described as timely intervention.

Director-General of the Borno State Emergency Management Agency, Ali Abdullahi Isa, assured that the agency is fully prepared to ensure seamless distribution across all local government areas.

The event was attended by federal and state lawmakers, including members of the House of Representatives and the Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, alongside senior government officials. Read More

Governor Abba Yusuf has expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for approving a total donation of ₦8 billion to support victims of the devastating Singer Market fire in Kano.

In a statement issued Tuesday by his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, the governor described the intervention as “timely and compassionate,” noting that it would ease the hardship faced by affected traders and their families.

Vice President Kashim Shettima had on Monday visited the scene of the incident alongside the governors of Jigawa, Kebbi, and Imo states. During the visit, he announced a ₦5 billion donation on behalf of the Federal Government.

An additional ₦3 billion was contributed collectively by APC governors across the country.

The inferno, which broke out last week at Singer Market, destroyed goods and property worth billions of naira, leaving about 1,000 traders in distress. Authorities have also declared seven persons missing following the incident.

Governor Yusuf said the gesture reflects President Tinubu’s commitment to supporting Nigerians during emergencies and praised APC governors for demonstrating unity and shared responsibility.

He assured residents that the funds would be judiciously deployed to rebuild affected shops and provide direct support to verified victims.

The governor added that his administration would collaborate with relevant federal agencies, party stakeholders, and market associations to ensure transparent and equitable disbursement of the relief funds.

Yusuf also urged affected traders to remain calm, pledging that the Kano State Government would introduce additional measures to complement the intervention. Read More

In a statement shared Tuesday via its official social media platforms, the agency confirmed it is making active efforts to reach the young woman to provide immediate support and appropriate intervention.

The case has fueled conversations nationwide, with the hashtag #StopRapingWomen trending on X as thousands of users demand urgent action against sexual assault and stronger protection for survivors.

The survivor, identified as Mirabel (@mirab351 on TikTok), said the incident occurred on Sunday, February 15. In a video posted Monday, she recounted that she had struggled with insomnia and consumed alcohol in the early hours of the morning before hearing knocks at her door.

Believing it was a neighbour, she said she opened the door and was immediately overpowered, hitting her head and losing consciousness. She later alleged that she regained awareness to find a man assaulting her and claimed she sustained injuries during the attack.

According to her account, the suspect subsequently sent disturbing messages allegedly admitting to the crime and boasting about evading consequences.

In a follow-up video on Tuesday, a visibly distressed Mirabel disclosed that she attempted suicide by ingesting a toxic substance but was rushed to hospital by a friend. She said she would respond to messages once she recovered.

Reacting to the development, the DSVA said it had taken note of the circulating video and public concern, stressing that its team is working to ascertain the survivor’s location and ensure she receives care.

“If anyone has credible information that can help us reach her directly and safely, please contact the Agency by sending us a DM on any of our official social media channels,” the statement read.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended his condolences to former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, over the death of his elder brother, Mallam Dahiru Shekarau.

In a statement issued Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described the passing of the retired educationist and administrator as “more than a family loss,” noting that his impact resonated beyond his immediate relatives to the broader society.

Tinubu said the late Dahiru Shekarau distinguished himself through decades of dedicated service, contributing to human capital development and strengthening public institutions in Kano State.

APC Cross River Apologizes for Inviting Supreme Court Justice, VCs, and Deceased Officer to Party Meeting

The Cross River State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued an apology for erroneously inviting several high-profile individuals—including a sitting Supreme Court justice, three university vice-chancellors, and a deceased military officer—to a party stakeholders’ meeting with Governor Bassey Otu.

In a statement released by the party’s publicity secretary, Emmanuel Edem Inyang, the APC acknowledged that several names listed in the earlier invitation were included in error and should be disregarded.

“The party sincerely tenders its unreserved apologies for this oversight and regrets any inconvenience this may have caused to the affected individuals and stakeholders,” the statement read.

Among those mistakenly listed were Justice Emmanuel Akomaye Agim of the Supreme Court; Prof. Offiong Effanga Offiong; Prof. Francisca Bassey, vice chancellor of the University of Calabar; Chief Magistrate David Edogi, vice chancellor of the University of Cross River State; and the late Major General Edward Ushie Unimna.

The error sparked widespread criticism online and raised questions about political neutrality, particularly regarding vice-chancellors who often serve as state returning officers during national elections. Social media users and civil society groups flagged the inclusion of these officials as potentially compromising the perception of impartiality in electoral processes.

The APC confirmed that the affected names have now been formally removed from the invitation list and urged the public and party members to disregard the earlier publication.
