Petrol Tanker Explodes After Overturning in Ikeja, Emergency Teams Rush to Scene

Panic gripped residents and motorists late Wednesday night after a petrol tanker carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) overturned and burst into flames in the Ikeja Along area of Lagos State.

The tanker, reportedly laden with fuel, lost balance and spilled its contents across the road, sparking a massive fire outbreak that quickly engulfed the vehicle.

Eyewitnesses said the incident caused confusion in the area as thick smoke billowed into the night sky, forcing motorists to flee and triggering heavy traffic congestion.

Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), alongside other emergency responders, were swiftly deployed to the scene to manage traffic and contain the inferno.

You Missed a Crucial Moment’ — Mkar VC Faults Alia for Skipping Abande After Deadly Attack

The Vice Chancellor of Mkar University, Gboko, Prof. Zacharys Gundu, has criticised Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia for failing to visit Abande community in Kwande Local Government Area, where residents were recently killed in a deadly attack.

Gundu said the governor missed a vital opportunity to console grieving families and reassure residents that their lives matter.
According to him, although Governor Alia had promised to visit Kwande following the killings in Abande, he stopped short of the affected community during his trip, halting at Anwase instead.

“Anwase is not Abande,” Gundu said, questioning why the governor did not proceed to the actual scene of the attack where bereaved families were reportedly waiting for him.

He argued that failing to reach Abande — regardless of the circumstances — sent a troubling message to victims and the wider Benue public.

“If the governor failed to reach Abande, where the attack occurred and where the bereaved and affected people were waiting for him, he lost an opportunity to reassure them that their lives matter and that he is capable of protecting them,” he said.

The don stressed that Abande, despite its remote location, remains an integral part of Benue State and must not be treated as expendable.

“Abande, even though it is out of the way, is part of Benue. No inch of Abande can be ceded,” he declared, warning against any perception that insecurity or vested interests could lead to the community’s abandonment.

Gundu also raised concerns about what message the governor’s decision may have sent to residents of other vulnerable communities.

“If he was afraid to go to Abande, is he telling those living there that they are on their own?” he asked.

Illegal Mining and Insecurity

Beyond the visit itself, Gundu criticised the governor for failing to address the issue of illicit mining in Kwande, particularly in the Turan axis, which he described as central to understanding the insecurity plaguing the area.

He alleged that illegal mining activities have become intertwined with violence and criminality, accusing members of the elite of complicity in what he described as the exploitation of “illicit blood minerals” from Turan.

Describing Kwande as “the land of gold and the sacred land of the Tiv,” the professor warned that allowing the area’s rich economic and cultural heritage to be destroyed would carry grave consequences.

‘Denial Compounds the Pain’

Gundu recalled previous killings in Kwande and expressed sadness over what he described as official denial of past incidents, noting that dismissing such tragedies only deepens the pain of affected communities.

He also took aim at traditional rulers, elected officials and political appointees from Kwande who accompanied the governor on the visit but allegedly failed to insist that he proceed to Abande.

“If anyone from Kwande, whether a traditional ruler or an elected or appointed official, was with the governor and did not urge him to go to Abande to see things for himself, that person has failed the people of Kwande,” he said.

He added that it would be even more troubling if those leaders did not even consider Abande a priority destination during the visit.

‘Kwande Lives Matter’

Going forward, Gundu urged traditional institutions and political leaders to recognise that safeguarding their communities is a fundamental responsibility.

He also warned individuals benefitting from solid mineral exploitation in Kwande not to prioritise economic gain over human lives.

“Those profiteering from solid minerals in Kwande must realise that Kwande lives matter,” he said, cautioning that neglecting communities like Abande could have “serious and unfortunate historical consequences.”

Gundu concluded by stressing that the lives of Abande, Turan, Kwande, Benue and the Tiv people all matter, urging Governor Alia to reflect that reality in his actions.
“It is not too late,” he said. “History beckons.” Read More

Angola Unveils $500m Coastal Tourism Overhaul Backed by MUFG Funding

0

Angolan President João Lourenço has approved a sweeping $500 million public investment aimed at transforming the country’s coastal tourism infrastructure and unlocking its vast seaside potential.

The directive, formalised through Executive Orders No. 32/26 and 33/26, targets integrated infrastructure development in high-potential coastal regions including Cabo Ledo, Quicombo and Namibe.

The ambitious project will be financed through external funding provided by Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG), marking a significant international financial partnership in Angola’s tourism drive.

Tackling Infrastructure Gaps
The investment forms a key pillar of the government’s Planifica Turismo programme, designed to eliminate one of the biggest obstacles facing international developers — the lack of basic infrastructure.

In a statement issued Wednesday, Minister of Tourism Márcio de Jesus Lopes Daniel confirmed that the upgrades will include new access roads, reliable water supply systems, sanitation networks, electricity, telecommunications and public lighting.

“These initiatives fall under the Planifica Turismo programme, approved last year, which sets out measures for tourism planning and territorial organisation,” the minister said.

He added that the programme aims to improve accessibility, safety, urban functionality and overall attractiveness in tourism hotspots, creating favourable conditions for private investment.

Strategic Coastal Corridor
The project spans a strategic coastal corridor covering Pipas Bay (Saco Mar), Tômbwa Bay and Três Irmãos Bay in Moçâmedes, as well as the scenic Quicombo Bay in Cuanza Sul.

Despite growing interest from domestic and international investors, the government acknowledged that inadequate infrastructure has long hindered large-scale tourism development in these areas.

The Ministry of Tourism confirmed that while several private investors have signalled readiness to launch projects, many plans have stalled due to insufficient utilities and access facilities.

Rebranding Angola’s Global Appeal
The infrastructure push follows Angola’s broader tourism reform agenda and international rebranding efforts shaped in collaboration with investment strategist Julia Kleber, CEO and Co-founder of the Kleber Group. The initiative aims to reposition Angola as a premier African tourism destination.

Angola’s recognition as the Best Tourism Investment Destination by the Global Tourism Forum in 2025 has further strengthened investor confidence.

By prioritising public infrastructure spending, the government intends to lower entry barriers for developers, boost competitiveness and ensure sustainable tourism growth that creates jobs and improves living standards in coastal communities.

With the $500 million injection, Angola is betting big on its coastline — positioning it as a catalyst for economic diversification and long-term development.

Uba Sani Rolls Out DigiTruck Initiative, Vows Equal Digital Access for Kaduna Students

Governor Uba Sani has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to expanding digital literacy and promoting innovation across Kaduna State, declaring that no child—whether in urban or rural communities—will be left behind in the digital revolution.

The governor made this known on Tuesday at the launch of the “Class Is Open Everywhere” DigiTruck Digital Skills Training Programme, an initiative designed to take technology-driven learning directly to secondary schools.

Represented by the Commissioner for Youth Development, Gloria Ibrahim, Sani stressed that access to technology and digital skills is no longer optional in today’s world.

“Access to technology and the right skills is no longer a luxury but a necessity,” he said, noting that Kaduna students must not only receive education but also be properly equipped for the future.

At the heart of the initiative is a fully equipped mobile digital classroom — the DigiTruck — which will travel to schools across the state, ensuring students can access hands-on technology training regardless of their location.
“Learning is being brought to the students instead of waiting for students to find learning.

It ensures that opportunity is not limited by location,” the governor said.

The programme will introduce participants to basic computing, artificial intelligence (AI) fundamentals, digital creativity and other essential 21st-century skills.

According to Sani, these competencies will shape employability, innovation and leadership in the years ahead.

During its stay in Kaduna State, the DigiTruck is expected to visit between 20 and 30 secondary schools across the state’s three zones, impacting more than 1,000 students.

“This means hundreds of young people will have their first real interaction with practical technology, and for many of them, this experience may shape their career paths,” the governor stated.

He expressed optimism that the exposure would ignite curiosity, build confidence and inspire students to see themselves not merely as technology users, but as creators and problem-solvers.

Encouraging active participation, Sani urged students to seize the opportunity.

“The future you are preparing for is already here, and this programme is opening the door for you to step into it,” he said.

Wike, Fubara Reconcile After Tinubu’s “Final” Mediation Over Rivers Political Crisis

Wike and Governor Fubara soften their rivalry after President Tinubu’s “final” mediation, signaling possible end to Rivers political crisis

Wike, Fubara Signal Peace as Tinubu Brokers ‘Final’ Truce in Rivers Political Rift

Political tensions in Rivers State appeared to ease on Tuesday as former governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, publicly softened their long-running rivalry following what President Bola Ahmed Tinubu described as a “final” intervention.

The latest reconciliation effort came after both political heavyweights met with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Sunday — a move presidency sources described as symbolic and strategic. Observers noted that both men reportedly left the Villa together in the same vehicle, signaling a thaw in relations.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja after inspecting ongoing road projects in Life Camp and Karsana, Wike expressed optimism that the President’s intervention would permanently end the lingering political crisis.

“I believe, by the grace of God, this will be the last time,” Wike said.

“I have told the Assembly to obey Mr President, which I know they will not hesitate to do. I also believe that this is the final time we will hear this kind of discourse.”

He acknowledged Tinubu’s role as a mediator and father figure in the dispute.

“All I can tell you is that Mr President has been very kind to the people of the state. If there seems to be a problem between the legislature and the governor, as a father, he really has to intervene,” Wike stated.

The FCT Minister emphasized that while presidential intervention was necessary, it should not become a recurring feature of Rivers politics.

“I remember this is the second time Mr President has intervened. I believe, by the grace of God, this will be the last time,” he reiterated.

In what many analysts see as a significant tone shift, Governor Fubara also spoke glowingly of his predecessor during an inspection of the over 50-kilometre Port Harcourt Ring Road project — one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in the state.

“This project is very important, considering the person who conceived it, My Oga, the honourable minister,” Fubara said.

“He had a very big vision. He believed that if I achieved this project in record time, people would be happy with me.”

The governor reaffirmed his commitment to completing the project by October, noting its strategic importance to Rivers’ long-term urban and economic development.

“Notwithstanding whatever is happening, it is also my wish and my struggle to ensure that that wish comes through. So you can understand the importance of this project to us and to everyone who means well to our dear state,” he said.

The Ring Road project, cutting across five local government areas, is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion within Port Harcourt and adjoining communities.

Fubara revealed that the contractor, Julius Berger Nigeria Limited, had assured the government of timely delivery provided funding remains steady.

“If you could remember, the project was supposed to be for about 36 months, and we felt we’re already close to that 36 months. We need to really confirm the level of progress that the company has made.

“In the course of our discussion, they are still assuring us that by October, they will deliver the project, and I strongly believe this promise I make to my people will be delivered. What they need is the fund, and from my own end is the push,” Fubara said.

The political rift between Wike and Fubara began shortly after the governor assumed office in May 2023. The fallout triggered deep divisions within the Rivers State House of Assembly, impeachment threats, and months of governance instability.

President Tinubu had previously intervened in December 2023 and again in 2025, when he declared a state of emergency in Rivers State and temporarily suspended executive powers before restoring civil rule six months later.

Tuesday’s public exchanges, however, suggest a possible turning point in the protracted crisis.

While inspecting projects in Abuja, Wike also expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of work by contractors.

“We are very impressed with the quality of work. I sincerely thank them and believe that on our part, we will make sure that they get the necessary funding to finish this project on time,” he said.

For Rivers residents, the emerging détente offers hope that attention may finally shift from political brinkmanship to governance and development.

Whether this reconciliation truly marks the end of the Wike–Fubara rivalry remains to be seen — but for now, both camps appear aligned in projecting unity and stability.

And as Wike declared, this intervention, he hopes, will indeed be the last. Read More

Lassa Fever Alert: Kwara EPA Threatens Sanctions for Food Vendors, Garri Processors Over Poor Hygiene

Lassa Fever Alert: Kwara EPA Threatens Sanctions for Food Vendors, Garri Processors Over Poor Hygiene

The Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA) has issued a stern warning to food processors, garri production centres and street food vendors across the state to adhere strictly to hygiene and waste management regulations or risk sanctions.

The directive, aimed at curbing the spread of Lassa fever, was contained in a statement released on Wednesday by the agency’s Press Secretary, Aliyu Amode.

The agency expressed concern over environmental practices that could increase the risk of transmission of the viral disease.

General Manager of KWEPA, Jide Aina, emphasised that Lassa fever is commonly transmitted through contact with infected rodents or consumption of food contaminated by rodent urine or droppings.

“Food handlers occupy a critical position in safeguarding public health, particularly in preventing contamination during food processing, storage and sales,” the statement read.

Aina directed garri processing factories and other food production facilities to store raw materials and finished products in rodent-proof containers at all times.

He also stressed the importance of regular cleaning of processing equipment, proper facility maintenance and effective waste disposal to prevent rodent infestation.

The agency cautioned street food vendors against displaying food on bare ground, roadsides or other exposed surfaces.

Vendors were urged to always keep food covered, maintain high standards of personal hygiene, wash hands regularly with soap and clean water, and dispose of refuse responsibly rather than dumping waste in drainage channels or public spaces.

“Key preventive measures include maintaining clean surroundings around business premises, using safe water for food preparation and ensuring proper handling and disposal of food packaging materials,” Aina stated.

KWEPA announced plans to step up routine inspections and enforcement activities across the state, warning that violators would face penalties in accordance with environmental health laws.

“Ensuring proper hygiene and waste management is not optional; it is essential to protecting lives. Together, we can drastically reduce the risk of Lassa fever and promote a healthier Kwara State,” Aina added.

He called for collective responsibility among food business operators and residents, stressing that preventing Lassa fever requires proactive collaboration from all stakeholders.
Government Debunks NYSC Lassa Fever Rumours

The warning comes amid recent social media claims alleging that corps members at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp in Kwara had died from Lassa fever.

However, the Kwara State Government dismissed the reports, stating that no outbreak or confirmed cases had been recorded at the camp.

According to a statement issued Tuesday by the Ministry of Health’s Press Secretary, Saad Hamdalat, the state’s Rapid Response Team, led by the State Epidemiologist, investigated the claims after rumours surfaced on February 8 and found no evidence of infection among corps members or camp officials.

The NYSC State Coordinator, Olaoluwa Onifade, also clarified that the corps member referenced in online posts had a pre-existing chronic condition and died at a health facility outside the camp, with no laboratory confirmation linking the death to Lassa fever.

The state government reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring public health concerns while urging residents to disregard unverified reports. Read More

Uba Sani Approves Compensation for 189 Rigasa Households as Major Road Projects Accelerate

0

Governor Uba Sani has approved compensation for 189 households affected by ongoing road construction across four key corridors in Rigasa, Kaduna State, with disbursement set to commence within days.

Managing Director of the Kaduna State Roads Agency (KADRA), Dr. Abdullahi Baba Ahmed, disclosed this during an inspection tour of projects linking Rigasa to the Rigasa Train Station, as well as the reconstruction of the Zango–Asibiti–Tudun Wada Road in Kaduna South.

“His Excellency has graciously approved compensation to about 189 households across these four corridors. Disbursement will commence within the next one to three days,” Ahmed said.

Strategic Roads to Boost Mobility, Economy
The compensation covers properties located along Makera Road, Ado Garam, Asmau Makarfi and Lokoja Road — corridors described as critical to mobility and economic activities in Rigasa and surrounding communities.

Ahmed explained that construction work by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) had regained momentum after initial setbacks caused by the relocation of water pipelines and electricity lines along the project routes.

“The contractor is fully mobilised and back on site. Let me make it clear that the Kaduna State Government is not owing the contractor a dime. The only challenge was property compensation and relocation of services, which has now been resolved,” he stated.

He identified the Lokoja Road axis as particularly strategic, noting that it connects Rigasa to the train station and other national infrastructure. He assured residents that the contractor would remain on site until the project is completed.

Bridge Expansion and Project Milestones
At the Kabala Costain–Aliyu Makama Link Road, Ahmed revealed that the inherited project had progressed from approximately 30 per cent completion to over 60 per cent under the current administration.

He said weak soil conditions necessitated a design review, resulting in the extension of the bridge to ensure safety and long-term durability.

“As you can see, piling works, precasting of beams and other structural components have commenced. By the rainy season, we expect to complete the bridge and open the road to traffic,” he added.

66 Roads Completed Across Kaduna
Commissioner for Information, Ahmed Maiyaki, said the inspection formed part of the government’s broader effort to track progress on 140 road projects spanning urban, semi-urban and rural communities.

According to him, 66 road routes have already been completed.

“The intention is to deliver legacy projects that will stand the test of time. Quality is as important as completion, and that is why these projects are being closely monitored,” Maiyaki said.

He emphasised Governor Sani’s resolve not to abandon any project initiated under his administration.

Residents Welcome Development
Residents of Rigasa have welcomed the intervention, expressing optimism that the projects will improve movement, enhance access to schools and hospitals, and stimulate economic activity.

Chairman of Government Day Secondary School, Rigasa Central, Saidu Salisu, commended the state government for extending infrastructure development to the area.

Another resident, Mallam Auwalu Adamu, said earlier concerns among residents had been allayed following assurances that affected households would receive compensation.

The ongoing works on Ado Garam, Asmau Makarfi, Lokoja and Makera roads are regarded as vital links connecting Rigasa with adjoining communities and key public facilities.

Ado-Odo/Ota LG Boss, Olota Storm Sango-Ota Market, Launch Crackdown on Roadside Trading, Parking Hazards

Ado-Odo/Ota LG Chairman, Lawal Wasiu and the Olota of Ota, Oba Adeyemi Obalanlege, move to stop roadside trading and illegal parking at Sango-Ota Market over safety and traffic concerns

Traffic Gridlock in Sango-Ota: LG Chairman Lawal Wasiu, Olota Take Action on Roadside Trading, Parking Hazards

The Executive Chairman of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government, Hon. Lawal Adewale Wasiu, FCA, has launched a decisive move against roadside trading and indiscriminate parking at the ever-busy Sango/Ota Market, citing growing safety risks and traffic congestion.

The Chairman, alongside His Royal Majesty, the Olota of Ota, Oba Abdulkabir Adeyemi Obalanlege, Lanlege Ekun II, paid a strategic visit to the market on Tuesday to directly address traders and motorists over what officials described as “increasing disorder” around the commercial hub.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on February 11, 2026, by the Council’s Chief Information and Public Relations Officer, Alabi Sheriff.

According to the statement, the intervention became necessary due to mounting complaints over traders displaying goods along major roads and vehicles parked indiscriminately within and around the market environment.

“These activities disrupt traffic flow and pose serious dangers to pedestrians, motorists, and traders,” the statement noted.

During the engagement, both the Chairman and the Olota stressed the urgent need for order, discipline, and compliance with government regulations.

They urged traders to relocate fully into designated market stalls and warned motorists against illegal roadside parking that contributes to traffic gridlock and potential accidents.

The royal father and the council boss emphasized that public safety must take priority over convenience.

Beyond the market visit, the Chairman and the monarch also inspected the ongoing construction work along the Ota-Idiroko Road, where Hon. Lawal Wasiu expressed concern over the hardship residents are currently experiencing.

He observed that several adjoining streets had been cut off without proper access points, creating movement challenges for residents and business owners.

The Chairman assured that appropriate engagement would be pursued to ensure that access issues are addressed promptly.

The enforcement and inspection drive featured a broad coalition of stakeholders, including former Ogun State Head of Service, Town Planner Amope Shokor, Engr. Osanyibi Jimoh, Law enforcement agencies, Local Government Works Department officials, Environmental Sanitation Officers, and Members of the Ota Youth Assembly.

The collaboration underscored what observers described as a rare show of unity between political, traditional, and administrative leadership in tackling grassroots challenges.

The council leadership reaffirmed its resolve to ensure a cleaner, safer, and more organized environment for commercial activities in Sango/Ota and across the local government.

Officials described the move as part of broader efforts to promote sustainable development, reduce traffic hazards, and restore order within one of Ogun State’s busiest commercial corridors.

With Sango/Ota serving as a major economic gateway between Lagos and Ogun, authorities say maintaining traffic discipline and environmental order is no longer optional — but essential. Read More

Dangote Petroleum Refinery has reduced the gantry price of Premium Motor Spirit by N25 per litre, lowering its ex-depot/gantry rate from N799 to N774 per litre.

The refinery communicated the price adjustment to marketers on Tuesday, confirming that the new rate takes immediate effect nationwide.

“This is to notify you of a change in our PMS gantry price from N799 per litre to N774 per litre,” noted the refinery.

The adjustment further strengthens the competitiveness of locally refined products, as the current landing price of imported PMS from Lome stands at about N793 per litre, compared to Dangote Refinery’s ex depot/gantry price of N774 per litre. Read More
