Nigeria Clinches 15th Continental Women’s Wrestling Crown as Tinubu Praises Team’s Excellence

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated Team Nigeria for its outstanding performance at the 2026 African Wrestling Championships, where the country secured a record 15th continental title in the women’s category.

In a statement, the President described the achievement as a testament to consistency, discipline, and national pride, noting that Nigerian wrestlers have continued to assert their dominance across Africa.

Team Nigeria delivered an impressive showing, winning eight gold and two silver medals out of 10 events in the women’s division. Overall, the team finished with a total of nine gold, four silver, and three bronze medals across all categories.

Tinubu singled out athletes including Mercy Genesis, Adijat Idris, Esther Asaolu, and Mercy Adekuoroye for their exceptional performances, praising their composure and technical skill.

He also commended Harrison Onovwiomogbhwo for securing victory in the men’s freestyle category.

The President further acknowledged the efforts of other team members, including Ebierelayefa Andrew, Stephen Akintewe, Dideikemei Erefagha, Solomon Ulabo, and Saviour Egoli, emphasizing that championship victories are built on collective effort.

Tinubu noted that the work of the National Sports Commission, led by Shehu Dikko and Bukola Olopade, is beginning to yield results through a renewed focus on discipline, consistency, and high performance.

He also praised the Nigeria Wrestling Federation under the leadership of Bashir Adewale Adeniyi for revitalizing the sport and sustaining Nigeria’s leadership in continental wrestling.
