The immediate past Minister of Power and a leading governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, Adebayo Adelabu, has refuted allegations that he disrespected the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Rashidi Ladoja, during a recent political event in Ibadan South East Local Government Area.

Adelabu described the claims as baseless and politically motivated, accusing opponents of attempting to distort facts, stir tension, and damage his longstanding relationship with the revered monarch.

In a statement released by his media aide, Femi Awogboro, the former minister maintained that he neither insulted the Olubadan nor undermined the traditional institution at any point during his address. He explained that his remarks were strictly historical and political, referencing past electoral outcomes involving progressive forces in Oyo State.

According to him, reactions from sections of the audience were spontaneous and not orchestrated or endorsed by his team.

“I can never disrespect the Olubadan stool because of politics. Politics is transient, but the institution of the Olubadan is sacred and deeply rooted in our heritage,” Adelabu stated.

He further emphasized that his relationship with Oba Ladoja transcends politics, describing the monarch as a father figure and mentor. He noted that despite differences in political affiliations over the years, their mutual respect has remained intact.

To reinforce his position, Adelabu revealed that he visited the Olubadan at his palace less than two weeks ago, where both men shared what he described as a warm and cordial interaction, underscoring the strength of their bond.

He urged the public to disregard what he termed “evil rumours” aimed at creating discord between him and the traditional institution.

Adelabu also highlighted the historical ties between the Adelabu and Ladoja families, tracing their relationship to the pre-independence era. He recalled the close alliance between his grandfather, Adegoke Adelabu, and the late father of Oba Ladoja.

Describing the relationship as deeply rooted and familial, Adelabu said it would be inconceivable for him to disrespect the Olubadan stool or the Ladoja family.

As the Agbaakin Parakoyi of Ibadanland, he reaffirmed his commitment to preserving the dignity of Ibadan’s traditional institutions and cultural heritage. He also cautioned political actors against dragging royal institutions into partisan disputes, warning that such actions could erode unity and cultural values.

“Political ambitions should never come at the expense of our traditional institutions. I remain a loyal son of Ibadanland and a firm believer in preserving the dignity of our royal heritage,” he said.
