Wike Denies Lobbying for APC Campaign Council DG Position Ahead of 2027
FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has dismissed reports that he is lobbying to become Director-General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 general election.
Wike, a former Rivers State governor, said he did not need any position in the campaign structure to contribute to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid.
The minister made his position known in a statement issued on Sunday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, describing reports linking him to the campaign council leadership as false.
Wike’s name had featured in reports listing prominent APC chieftains and government officials allegedly lobbying for, or being considered for, the position of Director-General of the party’s Presidential Campaign Council.
But the minister said he had not discussed either the leadership or membership of the proposed council with anyone.
“I am outside Nigeria, resting and relaxing after spending over 30 days, commissioning projects, flagging off new ones and inspecting ongoing ones, especially those scheduled for commissioning in December and January, next year,” Wike said.
He said his immediate priority upon returning to Nigeria would be the continued implementation of his mandate at the Federal Capital Territory in line with the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“When I return, our focus will be the continuous delivery of our mandate in line with the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda and to further enhance his electoral fortune in Rivers State and the FCT,” he said.
Wike also made it clear that his support for Tinubu’s re-election was not tied to securing a position in the APC campaign structure.
“Therefore, I do not need to be the DG or even member of the Presidential Campaign Council of Mr President’s political party to contribute my quota by ensuring that he wins handsomely in Rivers State and the FCT,” he said.
The minister’s comments put to rest, for now, speculation that he was seeking a prominent role in the APC’s 2027 presidential campaign machinery.
Wike, who has repeatedly declared support for Tinubu’s re-election, maintained that his focus remained on delivering on his responsibilities in the FCT while working to strengthen the President’s electoral prospects in Rivers State and the nation’s capital.
His latest statement also signals that his political support for Tinubu is, in his words, not dependent on holding a formal position within the President’s campaign organisation.
