The presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has said former President Olusegun Obasanjo has no political value ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Atiku stated this while speaking with journalists on Wednesday, saying he was not bothered by Obasanjo’s refusal to endorse his presidential ambition.
According to him, Obasanjo was unable to win his own state or the South-West during the 1999 presidential election, adding that his victory was largely made possible by support from Northern Nigeria.
“In 1999, he could not even win his own state or the Southwest; it was Arewa that made him President. He possesses no electoral value,” Atiku said.
Atiku and Obasanjo have remained at odds since they left office in 2007 after serving two terms as President and Vice President respectively.
Atiku had previously said he opposed Obasanjo’s bid for a third term in office to protect Nigeria’s Constitution and democracy.
Speaking about the 2027 elections, the former Vice President said he provided opportunities for many young Nigerians to serve in government during his tenure.
He said some of those who benefited from such opportunities have gone on to become governors, ministers, directors and holders of other key positions.
Atiku added that if elected president in 2027, he would continue to provide young Nigerians with opportunities to participate in governance and leadership.
