Customs Seizes N8.6bn Tramadol at Abuja Airport, Fortifies Anti-Drug Fight

ABUJA — The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) FCT Command intercepted tramadol worth N8.6 billion at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on April 5, 2025, in a major blow to drug smuggling. Unveiled Monday at the airport’s cargo terminal, the seizure was handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Comptroller Olumide Adebisi, FCT Command chief, condemned traffickers profiting off dangerous drugs. “These substances fuel terrorists, bandits, and criminals, threatening our nation’s peace,” he told journalists. Valued at N8,654,800,000, the tramadol haul underscores NCS’s crackdown on smuggling under Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi’s leadership.

Adebisi praised inter-agency teamwork, noting the transfer to NDLEA as a sign of strong collaboration. NDLEA’s airport commandant, CN Muhammad Jidda, received the cargo, lauding Customs’ vigilance. “This could’ve wreaked havoc on our streets,” Jidda said, vowing a probe to trace the drugs’ source and destination, with culprits facing prosecution.
