Thousands Rally Behind Adebutu in Ogun West, Fueling 2027 Governorship Race

PDP governorship candidate Oladipupo Adebutu received a massive reception in Ogun West as supporters and stakeholders pledged support for his 2027 governorship bid, intensifying the state’s political contest

2027: Adebutu Draws Massive Crowd in Ogun West as PDP Campaign Gains Momentum

Barely weeks after clinching the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship ticket for the 2027 election in Ogun State, former House of Representatives member, Oladipupo Adebutu, has recorded another political boost following a massive reception by supporters and stakeholders in Ogun West Senatorial District.

Thousands of residents from the five local government areas that make up Yewaland converged on Ilaro on Wednesday to welcome the PDP standard-bearer and publicly declare their support for his governorship ambition, in what observers see as an early show of strength ahead of the 2027 poll.

The development is drawing significant political attention because Ogun West, particularly Yewaland, is widely regarded as the political stronghold of Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, who represents the district in the Senate and is considered one of the leading figures of the All Progressives Congress ahead of the governorship contest.

Political analysts say the reception highlights the fierce battle already taking shape for Ogun State Government House, with both the PDP and APC expected to aggressively compete for votes in the strategically important Ogun West axis.

At the stakeholders’ meeting, leaders from each of the five local government areas in Yewaland reaffirmed their support for Adebutu and pledged to mobilise voters across the district to secure victory for the PDP in the 2027 governorship election.

The gathering attracted party leaders, community stakeholders and supporters, with several groups endorsing Adebutu as the candidate best positioned to deliver inclusive leadership and sustainable development in Ogun State. The endorsements add to a series of declarations of support from stakeholders across Ogun West in recent weeks, signalling heightened political activity in the district.

Responding to the reception, Adebutu thanked the people for what he described as an overwhelming display of confidence in his aspiration.

“I appreciate this overwhelming show of love and support. I remain committed to providing good leadership, good governance and shared prosperity for all the people of Ogun State,” he said.

The latest endorsement comes barely two months after Adebutu formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election on the platform of the PDP and called on party members to unite ahead of the polls. He subsequently emerged as the party’s standard-bearer, pledging to pursue people-centred governance and inclusive development if elected.

Adebutu, who flew the PDP flag in the 2023 governorship election, remains one of the most prominent opposition figures in Ogun politics. His growing visibility in Ogun West, a district widely expected to play a decisive role in determining the outcome of the next governorship election, has added fresh momentum to the political landscape as parties intensify preparations for what is shaping up to be one of Ogun State’s most closely contested elections in recent history.
