Lagos Govt Closes Eko Bridge Outbound Lane, Directs Motorists to Third Mainland Bridge

The Lagos State Government has announced the emergency closure of the outbound carriageway of Eko Bridge leading to Lagos Island for urgent safety investigations and repair works.

The closure, scheduled to begin on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, will affect the stretch between Apongbon and Ijora Olopa.

The announcement was made in a statement issued on Saturday by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi.

According to the government, motorists heading toward Lagos Island are advised to use the Third Mainland Bridge as an alternative route during the repair period.

“In view of the closure between Apongbon and Ijora Olopa, members of the motoring public are advised to use the Third Mainland Bridge to access their desired destinations,” the statement read.

The state government, however, clarified that the inward Lagos Island carriageway will remain open to vehicular movement.

To ease traffic congestion and maintain order, the government said traffic management and security officials would be deployed across alternative routes.

“Adequate traffic and security personnel will be deployed along alternative routes to guide motorists and ensure smooth traffic flow,” Osiyemi stated.

The emergency repair work forms part of ongoing efforts by the Lagos State Government to improve road safety and infrastructure across the state.
