Iwobi follows Uncle Jay Jay’s Footsteps

Back in July 1993, a young Nigerian midfielder grabbed a game by the scruff of the neck and set his side on the way to their first ever FIFA World Cup™. Almost a quarter of a century later, his nephew scored the goal that took Nigeria to their sixth global finals.

Jay Jay Okocha’s second cap for his country saw the then 19-year-old score a superb free-kick equaliser in a World Cup qualifier against Algeria, a game his side would go on to win. Some say Okocha’s performance that day was a pivotal moment in his country’s campaign on the road to USA 1994.

Iwobi celebrates his goal against Zambia in Uyo

Alex Iwobi may be a couple of years older than his uncle was when he scored that crucial qualifying goal, but his youthful exuberance played its part in the strike that sent the Super Eagles soaring back to the world stage.

On as a substitute in the tense Group B tie against Zambia, the Arsenal man had been on the pitch less than ten minutes before he arrived at just the right time to stroke home Abdullahi Shehu’s cutback from the right wing.

The Uyo crowd were sent into delirium, much like the Lagos faithful were in July 1993 – three years before Iwobi was even born – when his uncle sent them into raptures with his superb set-piece.

Unsurprisingly, comparisons have been made throughout Iwobi’s career. Uncle Jay Jay was once asked who Iwobi admired as a child. “It should be me, I’d be disappointed if it wasn’t!” Okocha told Joe.co.uk.

And he would be right.

“I was always looking up to my uncle,” Iwobi told Arsenal’s official website. “Everyone knew that he was a very big figure in Africa.”

Iwobi’s observation is certainly accurate. Okocha went on to play at the 1994 World Cup that he helped his country qualify for, followed by France 1998 and Korea/Japan 2002.

Russia 2018 now awaits Iwobi, and one presumes uncle Jay Jay will be watching on with beaming pride.

“A dream come true. We’re heading to the World Cup. Nice to get the winning goal, massive thanks to our fans. The atmosphere was crazy,” Alex Iwobi.

El-rufai made the declaration during a town hall meeting organised by the government to get the people’s inputs for the 2018 budget.

However, on the same day in Kaduna, a new northern group, Arewa Initiative for Good Governance, alleged that the Buhari administration had not delivered the change it promised Nigerians two years after coming to power. Nigerian Army set for operation crocodile smile in Niger Delta

The Nigerian Army says it has deployed troops for the commencement of “Operation Crocodile Smile” in the six Niger Delta states.

Maj.-Gen. Enobong Udoh, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, said this on Saturday while addressing troops to signal commencement of the exercise.

Udoh said the operation was confidence building patrol rather than a show of force as widely reported.

“Operation Crocodile Smile is not a show of force but a confidence-building patrol that seeks to reassure the people of Rivers state and the Niger Delta that the army is ready to work.

“We are ready to work in close synergy and collaboration with other security services and agencies of government to ensure that there is peace and security for the people.

“Our operation aims to reassure the public that we are ready to fight crimes like cultism, militancy, and kidnapping so that people can go about their business without fear,” he said.

Udoh said that troops would carry out collaborative patrols with the Nigerian Police, Federal Road Safety Corps, Nigerian Immigration Service and the Department of State Security (DSS).

Others are Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, Nigerian Customs Service and personnel of the Nigerian Prison Service.

He said the division would carry out the exercise in Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers states while another formation would cover other states in the Niger Delta.

“Army, police and other security services was established to ensure peace; enforce law and order and create the enabling environment for economic activities to thrive.

“This is our ultimate mandate, and, as such, we urge Nigerians to give us the necessary support to enable us to succeed,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the three weeks exercise is slated for Oct. 7 to Oct. 28.

‘Anybody Who Kills for Religion Will Go to Hell’- Sultan of Sokoto

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar yesterday in Nsukka, Enugu State described the herdsmen currently ravaging some parts of the country as criminals and not Fulani herdsmen.

He said the rampaging herdsmen were not true Muslims, declaring that any Muslim that killed on the guise of defending his religion would certainly go to hell.

Abubakar who spoke while delivering the University of Nigeria Nsukka 57th founders Day lecture titled “Restoring the dignity of Man” said Islam abhors violence and killings.

“The herdsmen killing people are criminals and not Fulani herdsmen.

Anybody who kills people shouting Allah is a terrorist and not a true Muslim and will go to hell. Allah hates people who kill and said they will go to hell,” he said.

He however said Education remained a veritable tool for human development as it promotes unity peace and economy.

According to him, no human development would happen without education where knowledge and skills were acquired for development of any country.

“Countries that take education seriously tend to develop healthier and happier. Education is light and means of restoring the dignity of man while ignorance is darkness.

“Education will continue to be a veritable tool for human and societal development. Education is an instrument for national development and the interaction of persons and ideas are all aspects of education,” he said.

Also speaking, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State who was conferred with the Dignity of Man Award at the occasion said something must be urgently done to ensure the restoration of the dignity of man.

He noted that the unchecked rise in population had led to economic insecurity in some homes, urging traditional rulers in the country to begin to talk about it in their various communities.

Okowa thanked the University for the Award, promising to return to the institution to show practical appreciation later.

Also Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi in his goodwill message said the 57th Founders Day celebration was a landmark in the life of the UNN, which he said had met most of the aspirations of the founding fathers.

He applauded the vision of the founders of the university, whom he said looked beyond the region, to give it national outlook, pointing out that the motto of the institution, which is To Restore the Dignity of Man, had remained apt till date.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Vice Chancellor of UNN, Professor Chukwuma Ozumba thanked the Sultan of Sokoto for accepting to be the guest lecturer as he also praised the vision of the founding fathers of the university.

“We are glued to another Founders’ Day celebration of this great citadel of learning, this first indigenous university in Nigeria and one of the best universities in the continent of Africa,” Ozumba said. This Day

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have qualified for the FIFA 2018 World Cup in Russia after they pipped Zambia 1-0 at the Akwa Ibom International Stadium in Uyo on Saturday.

The tensed game which saw the Zambian Chipolopolo boys pushing the Eagles to the wall had a dramatic change in the 73rd minute when a goal from Alex Iwobi ensured that the Super Eagles would be at their record sixth appearance at the FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria’s striker, Odion Ighalo, had wasted many begging scoring opportunities in front of goal as lots of chances were missed.

But on his come on from the bench, a superb strike from Iwobi in the 73rd minute of the encounter gave Nigeria the all-important victory in the race to Russia 2018. The Super Eagles garnered as many as 13 points in 5 games which ensured Nigeria’s qualification.

They will play the final match of the group against Algeria next month.

PDP Chairmanship: Shekarau, others show support for Gbenga Daniel’s bid

0

The bid for Chairmanship of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by the former Governor of Ogun State, Otunba Gbenga Daniel has received another boost as a former governor of Kano State and erstwhile Minister of Education, Alhaji Ibrahim Shekarau, declared that the party needed a quality leader like the former governor at this critical period.

This was coming on the heels of general approval of other distinguished statesmen and former leaders who the front line politician has met as he crisscrossed the country for consultation.

Earlier in the week, former President, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (IBB), declared that Daniel is the best among those aspiring to lead the party at the national level.

According to Shekarau, the PDP is more concerned about the quality of who will lead the party and that is why Daniel’s ambition is being taken with all seriousness.

His words: “I assure you, we’ll be on the same page. We’ll mobilise for you and see how it goes”.

“You can count on my support. As a matter of fact, I initiated this project (Chairmanship), you remember I whispered it to you at your 60th birthday”.

“OGD incidentally you’re in the news all over the north. I listened to the news of your endorsement by IBB on Radio Kaduna this morning, it was very detailed. That radio covers many parts of the north. Everyone now knows you have gone to receive blessing from the right quarters”. Shekarau then promised to mobilise other members for him before the forthcoming national convention of the party.

IBB, who said he was quite excited when he learnt that Otunba Gbenga Daniel was interested in serving his country, described Daniel as a ‘breathe of fresh air.’

Said he: “I was elated when I first heard that you were interested in volunteering yourself for this great service to our country. You represent the breathe of fresh air that the Party deserves at this stage.

“I know OGD very well and I know his unparalleled capacity for work. I have a strong conviction that with OGD as chairman, the Party can be turned around again”.

“I am supporting you because I know you very well. OGD, you’re my Chairman in waiting.”

It would be recalled that Daniel also visited former Head of State, Gen. Abdusalam Abubakar (rtd.) and a former governor of Katsina State, Ibrahim Shema, who separately enjoined PDP members to rally support for Daniel in his ambition to be the next National Chairman of the party.

They stated that tthe former Ogun governor has all the requirements to take the party to the promised land in the nearest future and serve as a rallying point for all members.

It should be noted that many bigwigs and major stakeholders in the party have thrown their weight behind the former governor in his quest to be the next National Chairman of the party making references to his achievements as a two-term governor of Ogun State and accomplishments as a successful private individual describing him as a true servant leader, detribalized, visionary and a man of his words.       Guardian NG

Revealing! How IGP Idris, CP Gwandu Prevent Peace in Edo as Armed Robbery, Kidnapping Soar

0

….Gov. Obaseki Talks Tough, Assures Residents Of Calm

In Edo, evil blooms high on a throne of royal state. Pure vile outshines the lure of the beautiful state as miscreants and criminal masterminds stifle its peace and run over its security apparatus. The anomaly persists because for a curious reason, Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris, prevents a new Commissioner of Police (CP) from assuming duties in the state since the transfer of the incumbent CP, Haliru Gwandu.

Consequently, Edo has been thrown in panic and persistent state of tumult as the citizenry and senior government officials cringe from the terror of criminal gangs and their masterminds.

The criminals are believed to be those who used to collect illegal tolls as well as land speculators and touts who have been now been dislodged by the government.

The situation has aggravated since violence erupted on the streets and the state’s erstwhile peaceful neighbourhoods and institutions. Earlier in the week, Paul Otasowie, a professor at the University of Benin, was murdered by suspected hired killers.

Kidnapping has also been rampant in the state in recent times — Andy Ehanire, CEO of Ogba Zoo, Osayomore Joseph, a popular local musician, and Lawrence Adorolo, a Catholic priest were all abducted.

In the wake of the security crisis, Gaius Obaseki, the state governor, allegedly lost confidence in former CP Gwandu, but the replacement, Johnson Kokumo, has not been allowed to assume duties since the transfers were announced in July.

Kokumo was the commissioner of police (armament) before his transfer to Edo by the Police Service Commission (PSC). However, Garba Umar, who was deployed from Bayelsa state to Anambra state as police commissioner at the same time as Kokumo, has since assumed duties at his new post.

Further findings revealed that there may be more to the escalation of crime and insecurity in the Edo. Some police officers in the state are of the opinion that the recent upsurge of crimes is masterminded by the leadership of the police command.

However, IG Idris is also held complicit due to his persistent failure to allow Kokumo take over from Gwandu months after the latter’s transfer was announced.

There are also allegations that because Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) in the state are forced to remit money to police authorities, many of them have resorted to criminal activities in order to keep their jobs.

At the backdrop of the proceedings, Governor Obaseki has reportedly made efforts to ensure that the new police commissioner, Kokumo, assumes duty, but he has been rebuffed by Idris and Gwandu, while the police commission watches on helplessly, according to inside sources.

Meanwhile, Obaseki has said the state will not be forced by criminal elements and organised crime to the negotiation table. He emphasised that the maintenance of law and order in Edo and the liberty of the citizenry  “are not for sale.”

He called on Edo people to remain calm but vigilant claiming that despite the palpable insecurity, his government is opening up various sectors of the economy to ensure that jobs are available to both the skilled, semi-skilled and even the unskilled.

“We are also building vocational and technical training institutions where these people will be directed and trained for free in order to reintegrate them into the society where people live off the fruit of their daily labour in legitimate enterprises,” he said.

Digital Switch On – Broadcast Engineer Warns Against Using Outdated Equipment

Digital Switch On – Broadcast Engineer Warns Against Using Outdated Equipment

As Nigeria gradually inch towards the much hyped set deadline for digital switch over from analogue to the digital mode of signal distribution or Digital Terrestrial Transmission (DTT)a Broadcast Engineer, Media Entrepreneur and Founder of NN24. Tony Dara has warned against use of outdated infrastructure and technology.

Tony Dara, who also serve as consultant to the House Ad-Hoc committee of the National Assembly on Nigeria’s digital switch over process, emphasized that the quality of equipment provided by signal distributors are critical to the success of the digital switch over process.

The broadcast expert who hinges his observation on the use of obsolete equipment came on the heels of his recent fact finding missions to Integrated Television Services (ITS) Digital switch over sites in Ilorin, Kwara State and Jos, Plateau State.

Integrated Television Services Limited is a public company under whose purview the technical implementation of the digital switch over is placed.

Dara, had during his technical mission to Ilorin tried to ascertain the level of standards of ITS to switch on to digital signal distribution via digital terrestrial transmission. While in Jos, he also attempted to obtain necessary information and data in order to assess the level of performance and quality of service of the digital switch on in Plateau State, where Jos was christened as the pilot digital switch on project. In his technical assessment and report, Tony Dara had expressed fears and outright consternation on the whole digital switch on process based on his visits to the two states of Kwara and Plateau states. According to Dara“I am dismayed that for a pilot project of this nature, ITS installed obsolete transmitters that have been disconnected by the original equipment manufacturer”. He was also emphatic and worried over the operational environment of both digital terrestrial transmission stations in Jos and Ilorin built by ITS. Those DTT stations, according to Dara, “are below par they are installed in old buildings that are clearly neither fit for purpose nor appropriate for digital broadcasting workflow”.

Further giving insight into the Jos digital switch on pilot project, Dara berated the information from the industry regulator that ITS was to cover the whole of Plateau State from three sites remain an illusion till date as only Jos city location is functional which only covers parts of Jos city presently.

The broadcast expert, Tony Dara further warned the industry operators about the imminent dangers of ITS installing technology and infrastructures that are obsolete as this would greatly hamper the Digital Switch On process, because these obsolete technology and infrastructure “will not be able to stand the test of time and will not achieve the minimum quality standards required for digital signal distribution”

He therefore urged the industry regulator to pay optimum attention to some of the observed short comings of the Integrated Television Services Limited, which he had passed on for necessary action and intervention. Among the shortcomings as observed by Dara are that “the NBC put up 30 National free to air content to be distributed by signal distributor in each location. Till date ITS has only carried a minimum of 20 plus in Jos, the only site where it transmits, Upgrading DVB-T transmitters or converting to DVB-T2 transmitters has limitations will never be able to function with the full component and complements of a custom built DVB-T2 transmitter, thirdly is redundancy is critical in technology and broadcast transmission is not excluded, ITS DDT stations in Jos and Ilorin do not have sufficient redundancy and therefore prepared for failure, it does not demonstrate the ability to understand that lessons from new technologies enable ever improving engineering designs quality. Having been created from NTA, ITS  is expected to have a solid foundation in broadcast engineering and practice. ITS is a technical company and must conform with standards in engineering and technology, create environment that is supportive of productivity; environment that supports health and safety, and very importantly, since it is owned and funded by all Nigerians should be a leading example in this new era that we have embraced for broadcasting, With the increase in the number of channels licensed by NBC, space required for headend and transmitter equipment increases. Starting in old buildings with limited spaces, limits growth of the headend and lastly the antenna mast and towers are old and legacy infrastructure of the NTA transmission system, it is not clear however, if then longevity can be guaranteed considering the fact that maintenance and service records are not available; and that the digital antennas have heavier pay load and mass”

According to Dara, “I hope this intervention will help all concerned to see the clear and present danger of not getting this right from the outset.”, saying, “the digital era in broadcasting has given Nigeria a massive chance to leap into the league of  global media players as well as change the narrative and image that Nigerians are underachievers”.
