Kogi Governor, Bello Builds Multi-Million Naira Mansion amidst cries of Irregular Salary Payments

Civil servants in Kogi state, both serving and retired, may be grumbling about irregular payment of their entitlements, but Yahaya Bello, the governor, is not building his hopes on their economy.

The governor is alleged to be unperturbed with the state civil servants plights as he was said to be busy putting finishing touches to the manor of his dream.

Newsheadline247 gathered the multi-million naira mansion which an insider described as “a thing of beauty” is quietly located on Mahmoud Atta Street, GRA, Okene.

But there is a snag: residents of the exclusive residential area are complaining about the disruption the 42-year-old governor has brought upon their lives.

The governor is converting the street entrance to his private gate

“He has converted the main street entrance to his private entrance and is creating another entrance for lesser mortals like us,” a resident complained to TheCable.

“A governor converting a public road to a private and exclusive road for himself; this is a big shame.”

Reacting, Kingsley Fanwo, spokesman of the governor, said his principal has made a better provision for the affected residents.

“Some of these issues are not the way we see them. The point is that if he is building a house and the structure is affecting the road network and he is giving the people a better road, they should be grateful,” he told TheCable.

“It’s not as if he is obstructing the road and he is not doing anything about it. It’s not that he is flexing his power as governor. He has been considerate enough to give them a better road.” Thecable

Ibadan to have 32 Obas, as Olubadan remains paramount ruler

Ibadan to have 32 Obas, as Olubadan remains paramount ruler

Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, would soon have a total of 32 beaded crown-wearing Obas, with the Olubadan, Oba Saliu Adetunji, maintain his status as the paramount ruler of the ancient city.

This is the highpoint of the recommendations by the Judicial Commission of Inquiry for the review of the existing 1957 Declaration of Olubadan of Ibadanland and other related chieftaincies in Ibadanland, set up by the Governor Abiola Ajimobi.

To reduce the lengthy years it takes a potential Olubadan to get to the pinnacle of the two chieftaincy lines producing the Olubadan on rotational basis, the panel has also reduced the rungs from the existing 22 to 11 on the Otun line, while the Balogun line was reduced to 12 from 23.

The implication is that the Ikolaba chieftaincy would now become the entry point for a potential high chief, instead of Jagun chieftaincy, as it currently stands, if the recommendations sail through.

These were highlights of the report presented to the governor by the Chairman of the Commission, Justice Akintunde Boade (rtd) at the Governorís Office, Ibadan, yesterday.

Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi (2nd left); Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, High Chief Lekan Balogun (left); Chairman, Judicial Commission of Inquiry for the review of Olubadan Chieftaincy Declaration, Justice Akintunde Boade (rtd); and Balogun of Ibadanland, High Chief Owolabi Olakulehin, during the submission of the commissionís report at the Governor’s Office, Ibadan… yesterday

The presentation of the report by the 11-member commission was witnessed by members of the Olubadan-in-Council, led by the Otun Olubadan, High Chief Lekan Balogun, as well as Balogun of Ibadanland, High Chief Owolabi Olakulehin; members of Ibadan Council of Elders; representatives of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII); all the local government chairmen from Ibadanland; and other eminent personalities of Ibadan extraction.

Receiving the report, Ajimobi said no effort would be spared to ensure that the recommendations were implemented as early as next month.

He said his administrationís resolve to carry out a comprehensive review of the Olubadan chieftaincy was in response to the requests by the Olubadan-in-Council, Ibadan elders, members of CCII and others, insisting that the exercise was not new, as previous administrations had reviewed the chieftaincy declaration, but could not muster the political will to implement their respective reports.

He said the review was necessary to enhance the status of the Olubadan and bring it in line with what obtains in other Yoruba states and to conform to the modern trend in culture and tradition.

The governor said he was not unmindful of the pockets of opposition to the move, noting that he was not bothered, as long as those in support were overwhelmingly in the majority.

Earlier, Boade had explained that in arriving at 32 beaded crowns, the commission gave preference to the current 11 high chiefs that made up the Olubadan-in-Council; nine eligible ancient Baales and five Baales, who are members of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs.

He added that two Baales at the stateís borders with Ogun and Osun states were also considered for beaded crown, judging by their untiring efforts in ensuring that their areas were secured for Ibadanland.

Boade further explained that while one Baale was considered because of historical importance of his area, four others were also recommended on the basis of their historical antecedents.

For the avoidance of any doubt, the commission wishes to emphasise and restate the unassailable fact that the Kabiyesi, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, remains the only paramount ruler in Ibadanland. The guardian NG

EXCLUSIVE: Aiteo Chief Executive, Benedict Peters named in ex-Minister Alison-Madueke’s alleged corruption, UK property frozen

EXCLUSIVE: Aiteo Chief Executive, Benedict Peters named in ex-Minister Alison-Madueke’s alleged corruption, UK property frozen

Benedict Peters bought this £2.8m luxury flat in Harley House, London, in March 2011, with the help of London-based estate agent Daniel Ford. The property is now frozen.
Aiteo Chief Executive Officer, Benedict Peters, is the latest Nigerian oil mogul to be named in the case surrounding the bribery allegations against former Nigerian Oil Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, The Capital NG reports

Three London properties linked to the alleged bribery of Mrs. Alison-Madueke have been frozen under the UK Proceeds of Crime Act, at least one of which is owned by Mr. Peters.

The order, issued in September 2016 and obtained by Africa Confidential, forbids defendants Benedict Peters, Mrs. Alison-Madueke, Atlantic Energy’s Kola Aluko and Jide Omokore, Christopher Aire (a jeweller for Mrs. Alison-Madueke) and Donald Amamgbo (her cousin) from disposing of or dealing with the properties.

Messrs Alison-Madueke, Aluko and Omokore were named in the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DoJ) asset forfeiture, which stated that the same London properties totaling more than £10m were bought for the oil minister in order to secure lucrative Strategic Alliance Agreements (SAAs), which saw prized Nigerian oil assets passed to the minister’s cronies for pittance.

Mr. Peters’ company Aiteo has been linked to the 2015 INEC bribery scheme that saw Mrs. Alison-Madueke’s son, Ugonna Madueke, distribute $115million to INEC officials via Fidelity Bank in 2015.

But the inclusion of Mr. Peters as a defendant in the London case, which relates to an attempt to influence the former Minister’s contracting decisions, suggests that international investigations could be more wide ranging than was previously known.

Mr. Peters’ company, Aiteo, did not directly benefit from the SAAs, but it flourished under Mrs. Alison-Madueke’s oil ministry. As well as term contracts from the NNPC, Aiteo benefitted from the oil swaps, and bought Shell’s prize asset, OML 29. With Peters now in the frame, these deals could face the same scrutiny from international law enforcement as the notorious Atlantic SAAs.

London, via Houston

Mr. Peters has admitted to being the owner of the Seychellois company, Rosewood Investments Limited, who until now has been known as “co-conspirator #2” in the DOJ’s case. Rosewood Investments bought the £2.8m luxury flat in Harley House, London, in March 2011, with the help of London-based estate agent Daniel Ford.

Mr. Peters later bought luxury furnishings for the flat from Mrs. Alison-Madueke’s favourite Houston store, according to the US documents. The DoJ affidavit says over the course of two days in May 2011, Mr. Peters bought over $107,000 of furniture – including a sideboard worth more than $10,000 – that was later shipped to the UK and installed at Harley House.

Benedict Peters bought this £2.8m luxury flat in Harley House, London, in March 2011, with the help of London-based estate agent Daniel Ford. The property is now frozen.
Construction workers renovating Harley House over the summer of 2011 were introduced to Mrs. Alison-Madueke as “the architect”, and Kola Aluko, who was co-ordinating the renovation of Harley House in the summer of 2011, forwarded the plans for the apartment to the former minister.

Mr. Peters could not be reached to comment for this story. All his known telephone lines were switched off the multiple times PREMIUM TIMES called in three days. He is yet to respond to an email inquiry sent to him.

An official of his Sigmund Group, who was contacted by telephone, said he could not speak for Mr. Peters, and would not provide his latest contact details.

Diezani’s deals: the swaps and the blocks

The Swaps

Mr. Peters ran tank farms under the aegis of Sigmund Communnecci Limited until 2008, when a “re-branding” exercise renamed the company to Aiteo. Its success under the Goodluck Jonathan government has made it perhaps Nigeria’s largest indigenous oil and gas company.

Aiteo entered into its first offshore processing agreement (OPA) contract with Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation’s Duke Oil in 2010 which gave the company 30,000 barrels of oil a day. Under the contact terms, Aiteo was supposed to refine the crude and import a set value of oil products in return. That deal was periodically renewed, but it was not renewed in 2014.

In January 2015, Aiteo received another OPA deal (90,000 barrels per day) directly from NNPC, but the contract was cancelled by the Buhari administration. That same time, the company took over Duke Oil’s 30,000 barrels per day OPA. The deal was also cancelled shortly afterwards.

Former Governor of Central Bank, Lamido Sanusi, published an explosive memo in 2014 that pointed to possible NNPC losses of $20billion between January 2012 and July 2013, and listed the oil swaps as potential leakage points. Experts pointed to numerous loopholes in the contracts that could have cost NNPC millions – including a clause stating that records relating to the contract could be disposed of after a year.

Benedict Peters bought this £2.8m luxury flat in Harley House, London, in March 2011, with the help of London-based estate agent Daniel Ford. The property is now frozen.
President Muhammadu Buhari cancelled the swap contracts as soon as he assumed the Nigerian presidency in 2015, but it took until March 2017 for Aiteo to repay $202m in “reconciliation” charges – and there has been little transparency over how this figure was arrived at.

The blocks

By arguably the most lasting deal that Mrs. Alison-Madueke presided over during her time at the oil ministry was the sale of Shell’s onshore assets in the Eastern Niger Delta. The jewel in the Shell’s divestment portfolio was the Nembe Creek Trunkline, a critical crude oil pipeline that takes crude from the Delta to Bonny Export terminal – and the OML 29 oil block.

The Aiteo consortium was announced as the highest bidder for the most valuable block, OML 29, in March 2014, just a month after Sanusi’s memo was published.

Aiteo and its partners, Igho Sanomi’s Taleveras and a little known trader, Tempo Energy, bid $2.85m for the block, which commentators considered inflated. None of the companies had experience of production, and Shell encouraged the consortium to join up with a company that did.

It took over a year to for the deal to be completed, and in that time, Shell’s Chief Financial Officer warned investors that it was “difficult to predict” how the company would get approval of the sales from the government. Under the Petroleum Act the Minister has power of approval for the sale of oil licences in which NNPC has stake.

The purchase of the block was finally completed just days before the 2015 election, financed by Citi Bank, First Bank, Zenith Bank, and Union Bank Nigeria. The CBN demanded the reclassification of the loan in summer 2016 – as the Nigerian banking sector reached near crisis because of its exposure to Jonathan era deals.

The transaction was also partly funded by $512m of “seller financing” from Shell – under which Shell retains the exclusive rights to market oil from the block for the first five years.

James Bond returns, fans react

Daniel Craig will be reprising his role as James Bond one more time.

“I just want to go out on a high note. I can’t wait,” he said on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Tuesday.

Although some people on social media weren’t too thrilled about the news, a lot of fans are excited about the actor’s return.

One Twitter user is so happy about the announcement that it’s probably going to be all they’ll be talking about for a while:

James Evans wrote: “Daniel Craig is doing another James Bond and your [sic] gonna have to deal with me flailing about this for the next two weeks, at least.”

Daniel Craig will be reprising his role as James Bond one more time

From one Craig to another, the actor has won singer Craig David’s approval too: Ajay Chowdhury, editor of the James Bond International Fan Club magazine, told BBC 5 live: “He’s been the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful actor to play Bond.

“He’s made Bond such an iconic character, no-one thought Bond would still be this important and get this much attraction.”

While many fans are pleased to see Daniel Craig back as Bond, some people think it’s time to give another actor a go.

Prem Mohanty wrote on Twitter: “Seriously Daniel Craig is too old to play James Bond, 4 movies was quite enough.”

Idris Elba had been widely tipped in the past to take over, but that’s not going to happen – yet, at least.

Daniel Craig returning as Bond? Thoroughly enjoyed his Bond films but I was ready for @idriselba tbh!

Twitter user named Hood Economist wrote: “Daniel Craig returning as Bond? Thoroughly enjoyed his Bond films but I was ready for @idriselba tbh!”

It will be released in US cinemas on 8 November 2019 with a traditional earlier release in the UK.

There’s no title yet – for now, it’s just known as Bond 25.

It will be scripted by long-standing Bond writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, who have been writing the films since 1999’s The World is Not Enough

Daniel Craig has said this will be his last time playing 007, fulfilling his five-film contract.

Bond writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade suggested US President Donald Trump could influence the next Bond film in an interview with The Telegraph in February.

“I’m just not sure how you would go about writing a James Bond film now,” Purvis said.

“Each time, you’ve got to say something about Bond’s place in the world, which is Britain’s place in the world.

“But things are moving so quickly now, that becomes tricky. With people like Trump, the Bond villain has become a reality. So when they do another one, it will be interesting to see how they deal with the fact that the world has become a fantasy.”

Both writers originally planned to leave the series after Skyfall but returned again for Spectre three years later.

“Spectre felt like it closed off a certain way of doing Bond,” Wade said. “And I think whatever happens next will be quite different.”

A financial expert, Mr Nnemeka Obiareari, on Tuesday advised Nigeria to revisit the

Revisit 1963 constitution, expert advises FG

for an improved and sustainable economy.

Obiareari, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of a private financial advisory firm, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

“Revisiting the 1963 constitution will lead to fiscal federalism and some sort of autonomy as the various regions have to fund the organs of government from the funds derived from their  domains.

“The idea where states and sub-national levels have to depend on the central government will not occur because their faith will be in their own hands,’’ he said.

He said that if adopted, the republican constitution of 1963would enable the various states and or constituent regions to compete and grow economically.

“Each state will have to harness the resources that it has that puts at comparative advantage in the zone where it is located and remit a percentage as tax to the central government.

“There is virtually no state in the country that is not blessed with natural resources that could be harnessed for the development of the country.

“The adoption of the constitution will go a long way toward addressing many of the civil unrest emerging in various parts of the country because our people will be engaged,’’ he said.

President Donald Trump drew fire for a tepid initial response to the violence, and he followed up Monday with a stronger condemnation of “those who spread violence in the name of bigotry.”

Obama gave additional quotes from Mandela.

“People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love,” a tweet read.

“For love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”

The most-liked tweet of all time was from singer Ariana Grande earlier this year — saying “from the bottom of my heart, i am so so sorry” — after a deadly attack at her Manchester concert.

That tweet dethroned the popular photo tweet from the 2014 Oscars ceremony by actress Ellen DeGeneres.

Obama’s tweet also prompted more than 37,000 responses, including both positive and negative comments.

Manchester City to make bid of more than £50m for Alexis Sanchez despite Arsenal’s confidence he’ll stay

Manchester City will make a huge bid for Alexis Sanchez before the transfer window shuts.

They are ready to test Arsenal’s resolve to keep Sanchez with a mega offer in excess of £50m as they have not given up on signing the Chile star.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has insisted publicly they will not sell despite Sanchez only having one year left on his current deal.

Arsenal are also confident now that Sanchez will stay for the final year of his contract – and have not given up on him signing a new deal.

But that will not deter City from making their move as they are long term admirers while Paris Saint Germain, Bayern Munich and Chelsea have all shown interest but gone cold.

Arsenal’s stance has certainly deterred interested clubs but City are not giving up with Pep Guardiola believing his finishing, power and ruthlessness in front of goal can make a huge impact.

City boss Guardiola believes they need more options in attack despite already having Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus and a player who can finish off the chances they create.
