Tinubu Hails Gbenga Daniel at 70: A “Dogged Progressive” and Pillar of Nigeria’s Political Evolution

0

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to former Ogun State governor, Gbenga Daniel, on the occasion of his 70th birthday, describing him as a steadfast progressive, seasoned administrator, and a key figure in Nigeria’s political landscape.

In a personally signed statement dated April 6, 2026, the President reflected on their longstanding political alliance, which dates back to the lead-up to his 1999 election as Governor of Lagos State. Tinubu revealed that Daniel played a pivotal role in mobilising support for his candidacy, notably rallying the influential Heritage Group of Yoruba professionals to secure electoral victory and ensure a smooth transition.

Commending Daniel’s political journey, Tinubu highlighted his resilience and consistent alignment with progressive ideals. While recalling Daniel’s earlier defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), under which he became Ogun State governor in 2003, the President expressed satisfaction that the Ogun East senator has since returned to the progressive fold and now plays a significant role within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Beyond politics, Tinubu praised Daniel’s achievements as a renowned engineer and entrepreneur. He noted that Daniel founded Kresta Laurel in 1990, an electro-mechanical engineering firm that has grown into a leading force in elevator installation and maintenance across Nigeria.

Reflecting on Daniel’s tenure as governor, the President credited him with driving major developmental initiatives in Ogun State, including industrialisation policies, public-private partnerships, infrastructure expansion, and educational advancement. He cited landmark projects such as the establishment of Tai Solarin University of Education and the launch of the state’s first agro-allied cargo airport project.

Tinubu also acknowledged Daniel’s continued political relevance, pointing to his election as Senator representing Ogun East in 2023 as evidence of sustained public trust and influence.

“As Otunba clocks 70, I thank him on behalf of our teeming APC members and the entire nation for his service to Ogun State and Nigeria,” the President stated, while wishing him good health, longevity, and continued contributions to national development.

He further extended warm wishes to Daniel’s wife, Olufunke, and the entire Daniel family, praying for enduring grace and unity.

The tribute not only celebrates Daniel’s legacy in governance and enterprise but also underscores his enduring alliance with Nigeria’s current leadership, reinforcing his status as a pivotal figure in the country’s evolving democratic journey.

Oyo APC Leaders Meet in Lagos, Push for Unity Ahead of Governorship Race

Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State have intensified efforts to strengthen unity within the party ahead of the forthcoming governorship election.

The move gained momentum following a strategic meeting convened by party chieftain and Nigeria’s Ambassador to Austria, Dr. Florence Ajimobi, at her late husband’s residence in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Monday.

The closed-door meeting brought together prominent figures in the party, including the APC governorship candidate in the 2023 election, Senator Teslim Folarin; former Deputy Governor Rauf Olaniyan; Senators AbdulFatai Buhari (Oyo North) and Sharafadeen Alli (Oyo South); and Minister of Power, Bayo Adelabu.

Other attendees included Akeem Agbaje, Remi Oseni, Fatai Ibikunle, state party chairman Moses Adeyemo, and Idris Adeoye, alongside several other party stalwarts.

Sources familiar with the deliberations revealed that participants resolved to remain loyal to whoever emerges as the party’s governorship candidate after consultations with the national leadership, particularly President Bola Tinubu.

It was also agreed that the candidate selection process must be inclusive to ensure cohesion within party ranks.

In addition, stakeholders reportedly resolved to seek direct guidance from the President, rather than relying on third-party information, regarding his position and recommendations for the state.

The meeting, which commenced around 11 a.m., lasted for several hours, ending in the early afternoon.

As of press time, no official statement had been released concerning the outcome of the meeting.

Tinubu Hails Gbenga Daniel at 70, Praises ‘Enduring Impact’ on Nigeria’s Development

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to former Ogun State governor and senator, Gbenga Daniel, as he marks his 70th birthday, describing him as a man of “enduring impact” whose contributions have shaped both public and private sectors in Nigeria.

In a heartfelt message released on April 6, 2026, Tinubu celebrated Daniel as a “renowned engineer, successful entrepreneur, prominent politician, and longtime ally and friend,” commending his decades of service to the nation.

“Today, I celebrate Senator Gbenga Daniel… on his milestone 70th birthday,” the President said.

Highlighting Daniel’s professional journey, Tinubu praised his entrepreneurial success, particularly the founding of engineering firm Kresta Laurel in 1990.

“The enviable heights the company has attained… should not be surprising, given Otunba’s business acumen, hunger for success, and determination,” Tinubu noted.

The President emphasized that Daniel successfully transitioned his private sector achievements into governance, particularly during his tenure as Ogun State governor from 2003 to 2011.

“He accomplished these feats by dint of hard work, tenacity, wisdom, and courage.”

Tinubu credited Daniel’s administration with advancing industrialisation, education, and infrastructure, including the establishment of Tai Solarin University of Education and the development of the state’s first agro-allied cargo airport.

Reflecting on their longstanding relationship, Tinubu recalled Daniel’s role in his own political rise, particularly during the 1999 Lagos governorship election.

“Otunba worked closely with me… to ensure my election victory, a successful inauguration, and a seamless transition,” he said.

Tinubu also acknowledged Daniel’s political evolution—from the Alliance for Democracy to the Peoples Democratic Party, and back to the ruling All Progressives Congress—describing him as a “progressive politician and a true Afenifere.”

“I’m glad that he has returned to the progressive fold… today a frontline leader in our governing APC.”

As Daniel clocks 70, Tinubu expressed gratitude on behalf of the nation and the APC for his contributions to Nigeria’s socio-political and economic development.

“I thank him… for his service to Ogun State and Nigeria, and his commitment to the development of our country.”

The President also offered prayers for continued health and impact in the years ahead.

“I wish him many more years, good health, and continued meaningful contributions… I pray that his impact will continue to grow and endure.”

Tinubu extended his goodwill to Daniel’s family, including his wife, Olufunke, describing the occasion as a celebration of a life dedicated to service, excellence, and national progress.

At 70, Gbenga Daniel stands as a towering figure in Nigeria’s political and business landscape—one whose legacy, according to President Tinubu, will continue to shape the nation for years to come.

Yari’s Unwavering Loyalty to Tinubu: Conviction Over Convenience in Nigeria’s Power Politics

0

In a political climate often defined by shifting alliances and calculated loyalties, Abdul-Aziz Abubakar Yari is emerging as a rare figure whose support for Bola Ahmed Tinubu appears rooted in conviction rather than convenience.

At a time when political actors frequently align with power for strategic gain, Yari—who represents Zamfara West in the Senate—has consistently demonstrated a brand of loyalty anchored in belief: belief in leadership, governance direction, and the necessity of reform.

This stance was recently underscored during a special prayer session organised by the Arewa Think Tank in Kaduna to mark Tinubu’s 74th birthday. Speaking through Senator Tijjani Kaura, Yari called on Nigerians to support the administration, stressing that the current government inherited deep structural challenges requiring bold and sometimes painful reforms.

For Yari, supporting the president goes beyond political alignment—it is about national interest. At the Kaduna gathering, he framed prayers for Tinubu as prayers for Nigeria, reinforcing his view that leadership stability is directly tied to national progress.

Central to his argument is the condition under which the Tinubu administration assumed office in 2023. According to Yari, Nigeria faced entrenched socio-economic and structural issues that demanded long-term reconstruction rather than short-term fixes. Using the analogy of a leaking roof, he suggested that only comprehensive reform—not temporary relief—can secure the country’s future.

What distinguishes Yari in Nigeria’s political landscape is not just his support for Tinubu, but the consistency of that support. Having served as a member of the House of Representatives, two-term governor of Zamfara State, and now senator, Yari is widely regarded as a seasoned political figure with little left to prove.

Unlike many politicians whose loyalty is often tied to personal advancement or expected rewards, Yari’s backing of Tinubu appears to transcend such motivations. His political trajectory suggests he is no longer driven by the pursuit of higher office, making his steadfast alignment more notable.

Even more striking is that his support predates Tinubu’s presidency. At a time when political alliances were fluid and uncertain, Yari aligned early—and has maintained that position through the complexities of governance.

In Nigeria’s often volatile political environment, such consistency carries risks. Reform policies frequently attract criticism, especially when their immediate impact is felt by citizens. Yet Yari has continued to publicly defend and encourage the administration, from stakeholder engagements to symbolic gestures like participation in prayer gatherings.

His approach contrasts sharply with the prevailing model of transactional politics, where loyalty is often negotiated and withdrawn when expectations are unmet. Instead, Yari’s stance suggests a belief in Tinubu’s capacity to address Nigeria’s challenges—one that persists regardless of short-term outcomes.

While critics may question whether any political loyalty is entirely free of self-interest, Yari’s pattern of behaviour—marked by consistency, risk-taking, and the absence of overt transactional expectations—signals a departure from the norm.

As President Tinubu navigates the complexities of reform and national rebuilding, allies like Yari may prove critical—not just for their support, but for the stability and confidence they bring to governance.

In a system often shaped by expediency, Yari’s brand of conviction-driven loyalty offers a different template—one that suggests there is still room for principle in Nigeria’s politics.

ADC Chieftain Blasts INEC Chair Amupitan, Demands Resignation Over Party Leadership Crisis

0

Joemartins Uzodike, a senior chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has called for the resignation of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan, alleging he has “failed Nigerians even before any election.”

Uzodike’s reaction follows INEC’s withdrawal of recognition for the Senator David Mark-led leadership of the ADC, a move he described as “disgraceful” and “mischievous.”

The lawyer and political stalwart accused Prof. Amupitan of misinterpreting court orders, showing bias, and relying on submissions from an individual rather than established party structures. He said this action created a leadership vacuum in the opposition party, undermining both the ADC and the legal system.

“Amupitan is a Professor of Law and a Senior Advocate of Nigeria. How can he fail to grasp the meaning of status quo ante bellum, which simply means returning to the position before the matter went to court?” Uzodike questioned.

He further faulted the recognition of Nafiu Bala as a faction leader, pointing out that Bala “neither has a secretary nor leads any known executive committee.”

Uzodike warned that INEC’s current approach has set a dangerous precedent for Nigeria’s electoral process, accusing the commission of descending “brazenly and carelessly into the arena of political disputes.”

FGC Kano Land Deal Sparks Outrage as Alumni Petition Tinubu Over Alleged Secret Concession

FGC Kano alumni petition President Tinubu over an alleged secret land deal involving 30 hectares of school property, raising concerns over transparency and safety

“No Justification” — Alumni Fight Back Over Controversial Kano School Land Deal

A storm of controversy has erupted over an alleged secret deal to transfer about 30 hectares of land belonging to Federal Government College Kano, with mounting accusations that officials of the Federal Ministry of Education worked with politically connected interests to push through the transaction.

The Federal Government College Kano Old Students Association has petitioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging immediate intervention to halt what it describes as a backdoor concession of federal educational land for private commercial use.

At the centre of the dispute is a Public Private Partnership land swap arrangement which, according to documents seen by stakeholders, has already been concluded by the Ministry. A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for April 6, a development that has further fuelled suspicion over the speed and secrecy of the process.

Alumni say the deal was executed without transparency, without public advertisement, and without consultation with critical stakeholders, including the association itself.

They insist that the land in question is not idle property, but a core part of the school’s structure. It includes sports fields and open areas reserved for future expansion, assets they say are vital to the institution’s long term survival.

The controversy has taken a sharper turn following revelations about the private firm linked to the deal, Pluck Global Company Ltd.

The company, registered in 2017 and based on Beirut Road in Kano, is said to be co owned by Musaddiq Ado Bala Talle, a close associate of Kano State governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Talle is also a member of the 17 member Strategic Committee tasked with developing the state’s Five Year Multi Sectoral Investment Strategic Plan from 2025 to 2029, a connection that has raised questions about possible political influence in the transaction.

For many within the alumni body, that link is difficult to ignore.

FGCKOSA President Shoyinka Shodunke said the association was completely sidelined, despite decades of involvement in the school’s development. He noted that alumni have invested billions of naira over the years in infrastructure and academic support without laying claim to any portion of the school land.

He described the proposed concession as a direct threat to the legacy of unity schools, warning that it signals a shift from education driven priorities to profit driven interests.

Beyond ownership concerns, the association is also raising safety and planning issues.

It warned that introducing a mixed use estate in close proximity to the school could expose students to avoidable risks and disrupt the controlled environment required for learning.

The group has also questioned the logic behind the project, pointing out that Kano State has vast tracts of land suitable for real estate development.

“There is no justification for taking from an existing educational institution when alternatives clearly exist,” the association said in its petition.

FGCKOSA further argued that the arrangement offers no tangible benefit to the school and appears structured primarily for private commercial gain.

In a separate communication to the Ministry of Education, the association demanded full disclosure of any agreement with Pluck Global Company Ltd, including the terms and approval process.

It warned that if the deal is found to lack proper authorisation, it will pursue legal action and escalate the matter to anti corruption agencies.

The association has also issued a caution to the public, advising potential investors to avoid any land or property linked to the project, citing the risk of legal disputes and possible reversal.

As part of its counter move, FGCKOSA announced plans to launch a five billion naira development fund in June 2026 through its foundation, aimed at supporting infrastructure development without compromising the integrity of the school.

The alumni body has called on the President to immediately halt the planned groundbreaking and order a full review of the concession process.

Efforts to obtain an official response from the Federal Ministry of Education were unsuccessful as of press time.

ADC’s Kenneth Okonkwo Blames El-Rufai’s Detention for Mother’s Death, Accuses APC of Judiciary Abuse

0

Kenneth Okonkwo, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of indirectly causing the death of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s mother through his detention.

El-Rufai was previously held by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) over corruption allegations while in office. During his incarceration, he lost his mother and was granted administrative bail to attend her burial.

Speaking in an interview with Symponi TV, Okonkwo said the APC is attempting to manipulate the judiciary to serve political interests. He linked El-Rufai’s detention to his mother’s death, saying emotional stress on elderly parents can have tragic consequences.

“Somebody told my mother that thieves stole from the houses of some of her children, and she was so distressed that preachers had to intervene. Now imagine an aged woman of 90 being told her son was arrested—it is my opinion that this led to her death,” Okonkwo said.

He further alleged that the APC’s actions revealed a misuse of the judicial system. “They released El-Rufai only after his mother had passed, showing they were using the judiciary for political ends,” he added.

Okonkwo’s remarks add fuel to ongoing debates about the intersection of politics and justice in Nigeria, highlighting concerns over how legal processes are applied in high-profile cases.

Tinubu Commissions Nigeria Customs FOU Zone A Complex in Ogun, Boosts Expansion

President Bola Tinubu inaugurates a new Nigeria Customs complex in Iperu, Ogun State, as CGC Adewale Adeniyi outlines expansion and welfare plans

Tinubu Commissions Nigeria Customs FOU Zone A Complex in Ogun, Boosts Expansion

President Bola Tinubu has commissioned a newly built Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone ‘A’ office complex of the Nigeria Customs Service in Iperu, Ogun State, marking a significant step in the agency’s ongoing expansion and reform programme.

The commissioning ceremony, held on Saturday, April 4, 2026, underscores efforts to strengthen customs operations while improving working conditions for officers.

Speaking at the event, Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, said the new facility was necessitated by growing operational pressure and space constraints at the Service’s existing base in Ikeja, Lagos.

He explained that the project aligns with the agency’s core responsibilities of revenue generation, trade facilitation, and enforcement — while also prioritising personnel welfare.

“We’ve just commissioned the Federal Operations Unit; they will be moving here as soon as possible. It’s already been furnished. The accessories that would ensure proper functioning of the facilities have also been installed. Provision of a modern armoury and then, of course, you know that this is the warehouse directly opposite this facility. This warehouse will also support the warehouse at the nearby aviation village”, he said.

Adeniyi commended Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, for his support in facilitating the relocation project.

He also paid tribute to former Comptroller-General, Hameed Ali, noting that the initiative began under his leadership and laid the groundwork for its completion.

On financing, the Customs boss revealed that the project was initially valued at ₦73 billion, but may undergo review due to shifting economic conditions.

Adeniyi further disclosed that the Service has already begun operations at the nearby cargo airport, also commissioned the same day, with officers actively involved in cargo handling and terminal processes.

“We’re already at the airport, and we also had our officers who performed tallying when Mr President was asked to witness the offloading of the first cargo at the airport. So, we’re already there, the facilities have been provided for us.”

The expansive project is designed as a major customs hub, with plans to accommodate about 142 buildings, including a training college, multipurpose halls, and a sports complex.

Officials say the development reflects a long-term vision to modernise the Service, boost efficiency, and strengthen institutional capacity.
