Lagos APC Dismisses Kwankwaso’s Defection as ‘Ego-Driven Power Play’

0

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has expressed scepticism over the reported defection of Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, describing the move as driven by personal ambition rather than principle.

In a statement issued in Lagos by its spokesperson, Seye Oladejo, the party cautioned against portraying the development as a major political shift, arguing that it reflects an ego-driven agenda rather than a commitment to national interest.

According to the APC, Kwankwaso had previously indicated that any political move on his part would be contingent on securing either a presidential or vice-presidential ticket, raising questions about the motivation behind his latest decision.

The party further downplayed the strength of the Kwankwasiyya movement, noting that it has suffered significant setbacks, including the exit of key stakeholders such as the Kano State governor and other influential figures.

It argued that the alleged decline of the movement exposes its internal fragility and diminishing political relevance.

“Senator Kwankwaso’s political influence has been overstated. What is being presented as a strategic realignment is, in reality, an opportunistic manoeuvre driven by ego,” the statement said.

The Lagos APC maintained that true political relevance is defined not by past positions or public recognition, but by the ability to sustain alliances, inspire confidence, and deliver results.

Reaffirming its stance, the party emphasised its commitment to what it described as disciplined and principle-based politics, rejecting what it called self-serving defections and political theatrics.

It warned that such moves risk diverting attention from governance and national development, insisting that Nigerians deserve leadership anchored on sincerity, stability, and collective progress.

The party concluded that Kwankwaso’s defection should be seen as a cautionary example of ambition-driven politics, which it said does not necessarily translate into meaningful national impact.

Nigeria Secures Diplomatic Clearance from 10 Nations for Ambassadors-Designate

Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that 10 countries have granted diplomatic clearance for the nation’s ambassadors-designate, marking progress in the ongoing deployment of envoys.

In a statement issued by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimibie Ebienfa, the countries that have approved the appointments include the United Kingdom, France, United States, Ireland, Qatar, Benin, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Senegal, and Sierra Leone.

The ministry noted that responses from several other countries are still being awaited, particularly for nominees posted to Germany and Mexico.

According to the statement, the formal induction ceremony for the ambassadors-designate will be announced once the process is fully completed and confirmed by the Presidency.

The development follows earlier diplomatic moves by President Bola Tinubu, who in September 2023 ordered the recall of all career and non-career ambassadors.

Subsequently, a new list of ambassadorial nominees was unveiled in November 2025, with the Senate confirming 67 candidates by December of the same year.

In March, Tinubu approved the deployment of 65 ambassadors—31 career and 34 non-career—to various countries and multilateral missions, including the United Nations.

Among notable postings, former Director-General of the Department of State Services, Kayode Are, was assigned to the United States, while former National Intelligence Agency boss, Ayodele Oke, was posted to France. Former ambassador to South Korea, Amin Dalhatu, was named High Commissioner-designate to the United Kingdom.

The ministry reiterated that the process of securing agrément—a formal approval from host countries—remains ongoing, as Nigeria moves to fully re-establish its diplomatic presence globally.

IGP’s Wife Mutiat Disu Partners Tinubu’s RHI to Boost Welfare of Police Families

Wife of the Inspector-General of Police, Mutiat Disu, has pledged to utilise the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) to enhance the welfare, healthcare, and economic empowerment of police officers’ wives across Nigeria.

Mrs. Disu made this known after a closed-door meeting with First Lady Oluremi Tinubu at the State House in Abuja, according to a statement issued by her media aide.

Speaking to journalists, the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) National President said her visit was aimed at drawing from the First Lady’s experience and exploring opportunities within the RHI that could benefit members of the association nationwide.

She noted that her interaction with the First Lady had already provided valuable insights into how POWA could key into the initiative’s programmes, particularly in areas of social intervention and healthcare support for police families.

Mrs. Disu expressed optimism that closer collaboration with the First Lady would translate into tangible benefits for members, many of whom rely on such programmes for support and empowerment.

She emphasised that the women-focused nature of the Renewed Hope Initiative aligns with POWA’s structure, which is largely made up of women, making the partnership both strategic and impactful.

“What people should expect from me is that I am ready to work with Mama on this RHI as it affects our women,” she said, highlighting her commitment to ensuring that police officers’ families are not left out of national social programmes.

In her remarks, Mrs. Tinubu urged the POWA president to prioritise the welfare of police officers’ wives, stressing the importance of sustained support systems for families of security personnel.

Mrs. Disu assumed leadership of POWA following the appointment of her husband, Olatunji Disu, as Inspector-General of Police on February 24.

Afreximbank Leads $4bn Financing for Dangote Refinery with $2.5bn Commitment

Afreximbank Leads $4bn Financing for Dangote Refinery with $2.5bn Commitment

African Export-Import Bank has underwritten $2.5 billion in a $4 billion senior syndicated term loan for Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals, in a move aimed at strengthening the refinery’s financial position and supporting its long-term growth and expansion strategy.

The five-year facility, arranged alongside Access Bank as co-Mandated Lead Arrangers, is designed to consolidate existing debt, optimise the refinery’s capital structure and align its financing with current operational realities.

The transaction marks a significant milestone for the Dangote Refinery, Africa’s largest refining and petrochemical complex with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day.

Afreximbank’s $2.5 billion participation represents the largest share of the syndicate, underscoring its strategic role in mobilising capital for industrial projects across the continent. The bank said the financing aligns with its mandate to promote industrialisation, reduce reliance on imported petroleum products and deepen intra-African trade.

Since refining operations commenced in February 2024, Afreximbank has played a key role in supporting the project, including providing a $1 billion working capital facility and acting as financial adviser on the Naira-for-Crude initiative, which facilitates crude procurement and product sales in local currency.

Speaking during a strategy session in Cairo, Egypt, President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Afreximbank, George Elombi, said the bank’s continued backing reflects confidence in indigenous African enterprises.

“We take immense pride in being the single largest provider of financing to the Dangote Group. We do so primarily because Dangote is African,” he said. “When we invest in ourselves, we do more than create jobs and wealth or expand government revenues; we build a secure and resilient future for our continent”

Elombi disclosed that Afreximbank has committed about $15 billion to Dangote Group since 2015, highlighting the scale of its long-term partnership with the conglomerate.

President and Chief Executive of Dangote Industries Limited, Aliko Dangote, described the financing as a critical step in positioning the refinery for its next phase of expansion.

“This financing marks an important step in strengthening the financial foundation of Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals and positions the business for the next phase of its growth,” he said. “We appreciate Afreximbank’s continued support and confidence in our vision to build world-class industrial capacity that serves Nigeria, Africa and global markets.”

The syndicated loan attracted strong participation from a mix of African and international financial institutions, reflecting sustained investor confidence in the refinery as a transformative industrial asset in advancing Africa’s energy security, reducing import dependence and supporting the continent’s broader industrialisation agenda.

…Re-affirming Unrivalled Capacity to Create Value

Lagos, London – 31st March 2026

Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (“GTCO” or the “Group”) has released its Audited Consolidated and Separate Financial Statements for the year ended December 31, 2025, to the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX) and London Stock Exchange (LSE).

The Group reported profit before tax of ₦1.23trillion underpinned by strong growth in core earnings, with interest income and fee income increasing y-o-y by 23.2% and 25.9%, respectively. The performance reaffirms its capacity to generate sustainable earnings and builds on the momentum from 2024, when GTCO delivered a record profit of ₦1.27trillion, driven in part by ₦517.5billion in fair value gains, which did not recur in 2025.

The Group’s 2025 profit after tax came in at ₦865.75billion against ₦1.02trillion recorded in 2024. The profit after tax reflects the impact of recent fiscal policy adjustments to the taxation of investment securities, notably withholding tax on short-term instruments. However, when normalised for this effect, underlying earnings remain robust, driven by growth in core operating income.

The Group continues to maintain a well-structured, healthy, and diversified balance sheet in all the jurisdictions wherein it operates a Banking franchise, as well as across its Payments, Pension and Funds Management business verticals. Total assets and shareholders’ funds closed at ₦17.8trillion and ₦3.4trillion, respectively. Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) remained very robust and strong, closing at 43.8%, likewise asset quality improved as evidenced by IFRS 9 Stage 3 Loans which closed at 3.4% and 5.0% at Bank and Group level in FY-2025 (Bank, 3.5%, and Group, 5.2% in December 2024). Cost of Risk (COR) also improved to 2.2% from 4.9% in December 2024. In specific terms, the Group’s loan book (net) grew by 12.4% from ₦2.79trillion as of December 2024 to ₦3.13trillion in December 2025. Similarly, deposit liabilities grew by 23.8% from ₦10.40trillion to ₦12.87trillion during the same period.

Commenting on the results, the Group Chief Executive Officer of Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc, Mr. Segun Agbaje, said: “Our 2025 result underscores the resilience and depth of our earnings capacity. Following a record 2024, which included significant fair value gains, our focus has been on strengthening the sustainability of our earnings by driving growth across our core banking and ecosystem businesses. The strength of our underlying earnings, despite a stronger Naira and tighter regulatory parameters, reflects the quality of our franchise and the discipline with which we execute our strategy. Importantly, this strong core earnings performance underpins our capacity to sustain and grow shareholder returns. Our record dividend payout this year is not only a reflection of our current profitability but also of our confidence in the Group’s long-term earnings potential. Looking ahead, we remain focused on scaling our ecosystem, driving innovation across our financial services platform, and delivering consistent, high-quality earnings that support superior value creation for our shareholders.”

Overall, the Group continues to post one of the best metrics in the Nigerian Financial Services Industry in terms of key financial ratios i.e., Post-Tax Return on Equity (ROAE) of 28.3%, Post-Tax Return on Assets (ROAA) of 5.3%, Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR) of 43.8% and Cost to Income Ratio of 27.9%.

Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc is a leading financial services group with operations across Africa and the United Kingdom. Renowned for its strong corporate governance, innovative financial solutions, and customer-centric approach, the Group provides a wide range of banking and non-banking services including payments, funds management, and pension fund administration. Dickson Defends NDC’s Independence, Dismisses APC Proxy Claims Ahead of Elections

0

National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Henry Seriake Dickson, has firmly defended the legitimacy and independence of the newly formed party, rejecting allegations that it is a proxy of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking during a live interview on Focus Nigeria on Africa Independent Television (AIT), the former Bayelsa State governor stated that the NDC’s registration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) followed due process and was backed by a valid court order.

Dickson dismissed claims of any legal dispute surrounding the party, stressing that INEC had already complied with the court directive and could not reverse its decision. He also described as baseless reports suggesting that either INEC or the APC planned to challenge the party’s registration in court.

The senator further rejected suggestions that the NDC was created to weaken opposition forces or serve the interests of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He maintained that his political record reflects consistent opposition to the current administration and that he remains unmoved by what he termed “propaganda and blackmail.”

According to him, the NDC is an ideological platform aimed at uniting Nigerians who share democratic values. While noting that the party is open to engagement with other groups, he insisted it remains independent and not aligned with any existing political platform.

Dickson emphasised the constitutional right to freedom of political association, stating that Nigerians should not be compelled to join any particular party. He dismissed calls for the NDC to align with platforms such as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) or the Labour Party Nigeria, insisting that citizens must be free to make independent political choices.

He also alleged that some individuals who publicly present themselves as opposition figures are, in reality, aligned with the ruling government, while reaffirming his consistency in opposing the administration.

Despite mounting criticism, Dickson expressed confidence in the NDC’s future, noting that resistance is a common experience for emerging political movements. He assured that the party would continue to expand its base and present Nigerians with an alternative political platform.

The senator added that the NDC plans to field candidates across all levels in future elections—from the presidency to state assemblies and local government polls—signalling its readiness to challenge established political parties in Nigeria’s evolving democratic landscape.
