Sanwo-Olu’s Lagos Tops Ease of Doing Business Ranking, Cements Reform Legacy

0

Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s reform-driven administration has received a major boost as Lagos State clinched the top spot in Nigeria’s latest ease of doing business ranking, reinforcing its status as the nation’s commercial powerhouse.

The ranking was unveiled at the 2026 Reform and Diplomatic Roundtable, organised by the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) in collaboration with development partners, including UK International Development and the Nigeria Economic Stability and Transformation Programme.

According to the report, Lagos scored 85.6 per cent to emerge first among all states, ahead of Kaduna, Oyo, the Federal Capital Territory, Ogun, Enugu, Plateau, Ekiti, Kano, and Nasarawa.

Director-General of PEBEC, Zahrah Audu, attributed the state’s top ranking to sweeping reforms, particularly in digitalisation and regulatory efficiency.

She highlighted the automation of land registration, tax systems, and payment platforms, which now allow businesses to complete transactions seamlessly online. Audu also pointed to Lagos’ functional commercial court and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms as key drivers of investor confidence.

The digitalisation of services and streamlined levies have made Lagos a model for other states,” she noted, adding that the council’s goal is to encourage reform across subnational governments rather than criticise underperforming states.

The 2025 PEBEC report further showed that Lagos’ sustained reforms have improved the business climate for both local and foreign investors, strengthening its role as a major economic hub in Africa.

Addressing stakeholders at the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu credited the achievement to deliberate policy actions and consistent infrastructure development over the past four years.

“This is the result of intentional efforts to create a positive environment for investments to thrive and deliver returns. We will continue to position Lagos as a truly business-friendly destination,” he said.

The state’s Commissioner for Commerce, Cooperatives, Trade and Investment, Folashade Bada, emphasised that the feat was driven by policy discipline and long-term planning under the Lagos State Development Plan 2052.

Key reforms include faster processing of construction permits, improved tax transparency, enhanced digital connectivity, and investments in transport and logistics infrastructure.

Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Bagudu, expressed optimism that Nigeria could achieve a $1 trillion economy through collaborative efforts between states and the private sector.

Meanwhile, Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, reaffirmed investor confidence in Lagos, citing the state as the most peaceful environment for business in Nigeria. His multibillion-dollar investments, including the Dangote Refinery, underscore Lagos’ growing appeal as an investment destination.

From rising from 29th position just four years ago to clinching the top spot, Lagos’ transformation reflects sustained institutional reforms, policy consistency, and a strategic vision aimed at making the state Africa’s leading hub for enterprise and innovation.

As the current administration winds down, the latest ranking adds to a growing list of achievements shaping Sanwo-Olu’s legacy in governance and economic development.

Nigerian Arrested in India Over Alleged N360m Drug Ring, Police Uncover Major Network

A Nigerian national has been arrested in Bengaluru, India, over his alleged involvement in a large-scale drug trafficking operation, with authorities uncovering narcotics valued at over N360 million.

The suspect, identified as Samuel Ikkena, 44, was apprehended by police in the Yelahanka area of Karnataka State as part of an intensified crackdown on drug distribution networks targeting students and residents across the city.

According to a report by The Indian Express, Ikkena allegedly operated the illicit trade under the cover of a clothing business, using it as a front to distribute MDMA, commonly known as ecstasy—a psychoactive substance widely abused for recreational purposes.

Investigations revealed that the suspect sourced MDMA crystals from the Bannerghatta area for about Rs 50,000 (approximately N3.5 million) and resold them at significantly higher prices through an organised network.

Ikkena, who reportedly arrived in India in 2012 on a business visa, initially engaged in garment trading in Delhi and Mumbai before relocating to Bengaluru in 2025.

During the operation, law enforcement agents recovered 2 kilograms of MDMA crystals valued at about Rs 2 crore (N140 million), alongside 31.396 kilograms of cannabis, 220 grams of hydroponic cannabis, additional quantities of heroin, and a motorcycle allegedly used for drug distribution.

Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh disclosed that the total seized contraband was estimated at Rs 2.57 crore (N180 million), with a potential street value of Rs 5.14 crore (over N360 million).

The arrest forms part of a broader anti-narcotics operation that led to the apprehension of 11 suspects, including two foreign nationals and eight locals, across multiple areas in Bengaluru such as Yelahanka, Adugodi, Bharathinagar, Jalahalli, and Pulakeshinagar.

In a related development, police in Adugodi arrested Baljit Singh from Uttar Pradesh and Arjun Joshi, a Nepalese national, for allegedly supplying heroin within the city. Authorities recovered 162 grams of heroin valued at Rs 55 lakh (N3.85 million), along with three mobile phones from the suspects.

Investigators said the accused sourced drugs from both foreign and interstate suppliers before distributing them at inflated prices.

Cases have been filed under India’s Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, while efforts continue to track down the key figures behind the wider network.

Radda Woos NYSC Members to Stay, Invest in Katsina as 833 Receive Discharge Certificates

Governor Umaru Dikko Radda of Katsina State has called on outgoing members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to consider settling in the state, highlighting opportunities in its civil service and business landscape.

Speaking at the passing-out ceremony of the 2025 Batch A, Stream I corps members, the governor described Katsina as a welcoming destination for career growth and investment.

“Katsina State is a home of hospitality and heritage,” Radda said, urging the corps members to embrace the state as their “home away from home” and explore long-term prospects within its economy.

A total of 833 corps members were awarded their Certificates of National Service (CNS) during the ceremony, marking the completion of their one-year mandatory service.

In his remarks, the NYSC State Coordinator, Alhaji Ibrahim Saidu, encouraged the corps members to leverage skills gained through the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme. He advised them to pursue entrepreneurship and self-reliance instead of depending solely on limited white-collar job opportunities.

The event also recognised outstanding service, as four corps members—Musa Suleiman, Adebayo Shola Philip, Fatimah Shuaibu Azaharaj, and Latifat Yusuf Bola—received Certificates of Honour for impactful community development projects.

Additionally, Faith Jijingi, Patience John, and Shalom Abiatha were presented with letters of commendation for their dedication and exemplary conduct throughout their service year.

However, the NYSC authorities confirmed disciplinary actions against four corps members, who were penalised with service extensions and abscondment sanctions in accordance with the scheme’s bye-laws.

Sonny Kuku Celebrates Gbenga Daniel at 70, Hails Him as ‘Born Leader’

Sonny Kuku celebrates Gbenga Daniel’s 70th birthday, describing him as a born leader and recalling how he intervened in a critical moment of his life

Emotional Tribute as Sonny Kuku Celebrates Gbenga Daniel’s 70th Birthday

Sonny Kuku, the Ogbeni Oja Akile Ijebu, has paid glowing tribute to Gbenga Daniel as the former Ogun State governor marked his 70th birthday.

In a heartfelt message on Tuesday, Kuku described the senator, popularly known as OGD, as a “born leader” whose remarkable journey spans engineering, politics, and business.

Kuku, who revealed he has known Daniel for over 35 years as a younger friend and “Aburo,” highlighted his strong upbringing in a devout Christian home where discipline, hard work, and moral values were deeply ingrained.

According to him, Daniel demonstrated early ambition and a commitment to excellence, seeking mentorship from leading figures across different sectors.

In engineering, he was mentored by the late Professor Awojobi, rising to become a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering.

His political journey, Kuku noted, was shaped by legendary figures such as Obafemi Awolowo, Abraham Adesanya, Ayo Adebanjo, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He described Daniel as one of the youngest Awoists and a key member of National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), whose political career culminated in two terms as governor of Ogun State and his current role as senator.

Beyond politics, Kuku praised Daniel’s achievements in business, noting that he drew inspiration from Subomi Balogun to build the Kresta Laurel conglomerate into a leading engineering enterprise.

He further described the celebrant as generous, trustworthy, deeply religious, charismatic, and stylish, with influence cutting across multiple spheres.

Recalling a personal experience, Kuku revealed how Daniel intervened during a difficult period in his life involving his exclusion from the royal court of the late Sikiru Kayode Adetona.

According to him, the issue stemmed from longstanding disputes fueled by influential figures within the Balogun family.

Kuku said Daniel stepped in around 2007, when the Awujale intended to confer the Otunba Obalofin title on him, helping to reconcile differences and secure his reinstatement.

“Without OGD’s intervention, I might not be OGBENI OJA today,” he said.

As Daniel celebrates seven decades of life and impact, Kuku offered prayers for his continued prosperity and longevity.

“May your days be long and your shadow never grow less. Happy and blessed 70th birthday.”

Court Adjourns Agunloye’s $6bn Power Fraud Trial to April 20

Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie of the Federal High Court in Apo, Abuja, has adjourned proceedings in the alleged $6 billion power fraud trial of former Minister of Power, Olu Agunloye, to April 20, 2026.

Agunloye is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on an amended seven-count charge bordering on official corruption and the alleged fraudulent award of the Mambilla Power Project contract to Sunrise Power Transmission Company Limited.

At Monday’s hearing, the third prosecution witness, Umar Hussein Babangida, during re-examination by prosecuting counsel Abba Mohammed, SAN, provided further clarification on the investigation.

Babangida told the court that the investigative team invited three former Attorneys-General of the Federation—Michael Aondokaa, Abubakar Malami, and Kanu Agabi—who all volunteered statements.

According to him, Aondokaa and Malami submitted written statements, while Agabi gave an oral account.

He said Agabi informed investigators that he could not recall the details or outcome of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in question and advised them to rely on official records.

However, defence counsel Samuel Falade objected to the testimony, arguing that it was incompetent since the witness was recounting statements made by individuals who had not testified in court.

In response, EFCC counsel cited provisions of the Evidence Act and relevant case law to justify the scope of re-examination.

“The position of the law in re-examination shall be directed to the explanation of matters referred in cross examination as confirmed by the Supreme Court,” Mohammed argued.

He added:

“Re-examination is an avenue for a witness to state the whole truth of any matter which was not dealt with in examination.”

After considering the arguments, Justice Onwuegbuzie upheld the prosecution’s position and allowed the witness to continue his testimony.

Babangida further told the court:

“Mr Aondokaa, SAN stated that if he had seen the conclusion of the FEC meeting he would have not given any legal opinion. While Malami, SAN said he relied on the legal opinion of Mr Aondokaaa.”

Explaining documentary evidence presented in court, the witness clarified:

“Exhibit EFCC 3K is an extract that contains only the deliberation on Mambilla Hydro Electricity… While Exhibit EFCC 3D… showed deliberations of other ministries before the defendant, the ministry of the defendant in question and deliberations of the ministries after that of the defendant.”

Following the proceedings, the court adjourned the matter to April 20, 2026, for continuation of trial.

Yeni Kuti Shares Emotional Story How ‘Baba Bush’ Supported the Family While Fela Was Away

Yeni Anikulapo-Kuti has paid heartfelt tribute to elder statesman Busura Alebiosu, popularly known as Baba Bush, as he prepares to mark his 90th birthday on April 24, 2026.

Speaking in an interview for an upcoming documentary, Yeni reflected on Alebiosu’s compassion during a difficult period when her father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, was away in the United States.

Describing him as “a kind person,” she recalled how he stepped in to support the family when they were struggling financially.

“I was close to him as a child. The truth of the matter is, my father was in America. He was away for 10 months, and my mother didn’t have money to feed us, pay school fees, and so on,” she said.

According to Yeni, Baba Bush made it a routine to check on the family, ensuring they were safe and cared for in Fela’s absence.

“He came to the house regularly to check on my mum. He would take my mum to NITEL to speak with my father through the telephone, look after us, and make sure we were not hungry,” the singer and dancer popularly known as YK disclosed.

Reflecting on those formative years, she added:

“What really comes to my mind is a man who looked after his friend’s children when the friend was not around. In general, he is a kind person.”

Yeni emphasised that Alebiosu’s actions were driven purely by goodwill, not obligation.

“He must have valued his friendship with Fela to even look after us. Fela didn’t give him money or anything like that; he just did it out of the kindness of his heart,” she said.

She noted that the household at the time included her mother, grandmother, and three children, all of whom benefited from his steady presence.

“We were three children, my mother, and my grandmother, and he would come to the house regularly to make sure we were okay, feed us—those kinds of things. He must have been a kind man.”

The bond between Fela and Alebiosu, she explained, dated back to their time abroad and endured throughout the Afrobeat legend’s lifetime.

Yeni also revealed that Baba Bush continued supporting the family over the years, including reaching out during challenging moments in her brother’s music career.

“I also know that when my brother was going through tough times with his band, he reached out to Uncle Bush for help,” she revealed.

Although the family later lost touch, a recent reunion rekindled old memories.

“Though we lost contact, a few years ago… I met Semiu, his son-in-law… I went to see him. I was very happy to reconnect with him. It was nostalgic for me seeing him; it brought back memories of my childhood,” she said.

She explained that the reconnection was partly driven by efforts to document Fela’s legacy.

“Incidentally, I had reached out… because there is a documentary on my father, and he is someone who knows so much,” she added.

Looking ahead, Yeni expressed hope of seeing him again soon, stressing the importance of preserving such firsthand accounts.

“At 90, the people you know are very few and far between… I do wish I had the presence of mind to visit him regularly.”

Recalling the past, she noted she was about eight years old at the time but still remembers his kindness vividly.

“The truth of the matter is, I was a child then… But I remember him because he was so kind to us.”

As Baba Bush turns 90, Yeni offered a heartfelt message of gratitude:

“Uncle Bush, ẹ ṣe gan, mo dupe on behalf of the family. Thank you so much. I love you, and I wish you many more years. Happy birthday—long life and prosperity.”

Netanyahu Declares Iran No Longer an Existential Threat Amid Ongoing Military Campaign

0

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared on Tuesday that Iran no longer represents an existential threat to Israel, citing what he described as major military and strategic gains in recent weeks.

In a recorded message released ahead of the Passover holiday, Netanyahu highlighted Israel’s “enormous accomplishments” in its campaign against Iran and Tehran-backed regional allies, while acknowledging the human cost of the conflict, including the deaths of four Israeli soldiers in southern Lebanon the previous day.

“On this holiday of freedom, Israel is stronger than ever,” he said, asserting that Iran no longer has the capacity to threaten Israel’s existence.

The remarks come as hostilities between Israel and Iran-supported groups enter a fifth week, with exchanges of fire reported on multiple fronts. Netanyahu outlined a series of coordinated strikes, conducted alongside the United States, targeting Iran’s nuclear program, ballistic missile infrastructure, and regional proxy forces.

He emphasized that the operations have significantly weakened Tehran’s military capabilities, hitting nuclear facilities, missile production sites, state institutions, security agencies, and senior officials linked to Iran’s defense apparatus.

Netanyahu further claimed that Iran’s long-term military investments, estimated at nearly $1 trillion, have been severely undermined, asserting that the strategic balance has shifted in Israel’s favor while Iran’s leadership has been weakened.

The Prime Minister’s statement underscores Israel’s confidence in its military operations amid ongoing regional tensions and escalating exchanges with Iran-backed groups, including Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, armed factions in the West Bank, and Houthi forces in Yemen.
