King Charles Praises Nigerians in UK During Tinubu State Visit Banquet

King Charles III has applauded the remarkable contributions of Nigerians living in the United Kingdom, describing them as a driving force behind innovation and growth across British society.

The monarch made the remarks during a state banquet held at Windsor Castle in honour of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as part of the Nigerian leader’s official visit to the UK.

Speaking before dignitaries, King Charles highlighted the growing influence of Nigerians across multiple sectors, noting their deep integration into British life.

“We in the United Kingdom are blessed that so many people of Nigerian heritage, having chosen Britain as their home, are now at the heart of British life,” he said.

He emphasised that Nigerians are excelling at the highest levels in key fields.

Nigerians are thriving “at the highest level of business, technology, academia, law, science, sports, literature, and the arts,” the monarch noted.

Reflecting on decades of engagement with Nigerians, King Charles said he had encountered numerous “quiet heroes” making meaningful contributions across the country.

“I have met so many of these quiet heroes in our schools, businesses, National Health Service, and universities, including countless young people who have flourished through the work of my King’s Trust over the last 50 years,” he said.

In a lighter moment, the King recounted hosting members of the Nigerian diaspora at St James’s Palace.

“Only last week, I was delighted to host a rather lively group of them to a jollof and tea party at St. James’s Palace. I was firmly assured that the jollof was only the best Nigerian, of course.

“Or, perhaps, it was Ghanaian or Senegalese. Diplomatically, I cannot remember,” he added.

The monarch also reflected on his first visit to Nigeria over three decades ago, expressing amazement at the global impact Nigerians now wield.

“From Afrobeats filling our concert halls and Nollywood captivating our screens, to stars competing in our Premier League and adjudicating in our highest courts, so much of Britain’s culture is in truth profoundly enriched by Nigerians,” he said.

He concluded with a toast that drew applause:

“Let me propose a toast to the President and people of Nigeria. Naija no dey carry last.”

The banquet forms part of President Tinubu’s two-day state visit to the United Kingdom, which began with full ceremonial honours, including a guard of honour and gun salute.

The visit features high-level engagements with British officials and meetings with the Nigerian diaspora, aimed at strengthening diplomatic ties and expanding cooperation in areas such as trade, security, and education.

Analysts say the strong presence of Nigerians in the UK continues to serve as a vital bridge in deepening relations between both nations.

Nigeria and the UK sign three major agreements on migration, border security and business visas, strengthening bilateral ties and boosting economic cooperation

Nigeria and UK Strike Major Migration, Border Security and Visa Expansion Agreements

The Federal Government of Nigeria and the United Kingdom have signed three key agreements aimed at strengthening migration management, tightening border security, and expanding business opportunities between both nations.

The Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) cover a migration partnership framework, joint action against organised immigration crime, and an expanded business visa scheme for UK companies operating in Nigeria.

Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, signed two of the agreements on Wednesday and concluded the third on Thursday during official engagements in the UK.

According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Babatunde Alao, the deals signal a deepening of strategic cooperation between both countries.

Tunji-Ojo described the agreements as a reflection of Nigeria’s commitment to a migration system that is transparent, structured, and aligned with both national interests and global obligations.

“This partnership underscores a shared determination to build a migration system that is safe, orderly and mutually beneficial,” he said.

He noted that the immediate focus would be on delivering measurable outcomes and ensuring effective implementation, expressing optimism that the framework could serve as a benchmark for future international partnerships.

The minister also highlighted Nigeria’s longstanding relationship with the UK Home Office.

“This relationship with the UK means a lot to us and you can see the level of commitment that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has put in,” Tunji-Ojo said.

Reaffirming Nigeria’s stance on migration control, he stressed that while the country remains committed to protecting its citizens, it will not tolerate abuse of legal migration pathways.

On the expansion of business visas, Tunji-Ojo described the agreement as a major win for economic growth.

“Regarding visa agreement, personally as the Minister of Interior, I can tell you that I am very happy with this, because for us, this is what we have been looking forward to,” he said.

He added that easing visa processes would help dismantle trade barriers and support Nigeria’s ambition of building a trillion-dollar economy.

“I want to assure you on behalf of Mr President and the great people of Nigeria, that we are open for endless possibilities of growth and socio-economic development,” he added.

“So be rest assured that we will be true to this, we will swing into action and ensure all barriers are removed.”

UK Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, described Nigeria as a top partner in bilateral cooperation.

“You will always be number one because you are the first to have gotten such an extensive agreement and we really do appreciate it,” she said.

“I think we both understand one another and I think we have a shared vision here.”

Also speaking, UK Trade Envoy Florence Eshalomi said the expanded business visa scheme would deliver tangible benefits for both economies, describing it as a bold and necessary step for growth.

What the Agreements Cover

  • Migration Partnership: Establishes a structured system to promote safe, orderly, and regulated migration while respecting laws and human rights.
  • Immigration Crime & Border Security: A three-year joint strategy to dismantle criminal networks exploiting irregular migration.
  • Business Visa Expansion: Simplifies travel for credible UK companies investing or operating in Nigeria, improving ease of doing business.

The business visa scheme will apply to verified UK-based firms with legitimate commercial interests in Nigeria, enabling smoother mobility for business travellers and investors.

Eberechi Eze Makes History at Arsenal, Matches Walcott’s Rare Four-Competition Scoring Feat

0

Eberechi Eze has etched his name into Arsenal’s record books, becoming only the second English player to score for the club across four major competitions in a single season.

The 27-year-old midfielder joins Theo Walcott, who achieved the same milestone during the 2012/13 campaign, in an exclusive list of Gunners stars.

According to ESPN FC, Eze reached the landmark after finding the net in Arsenal’s UEFA Champions League Round of 16 second-leg clash against Bayer Leverkusen earlier this week.

His goal helped Arsenal secure a 2-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium, sealing progression into the quarter-finals of Europe’s elite competition.

Since completing his move from Crystal Palace last summer, Eze has been a standout performer under manager Mikel Arteta, consistently delivering across the Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, and Champions League.

His remarkable consistency now places him at the heart of Arsenal’s push for silverware this season.

Eze will next aim to cap his impressive campaign by helping Arsenal clinch the Carabao Cup when they face Manchester City in the final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.

Asake Reflects on 2020 Struggles, Reveals How Setbacks Sparked His Breakthrough

Afrobeats sensation Asake has opened up about the defining challenges he faced in 2020, describing the year as a humbling experience that ultimately shaped his rise to stardom.

Speaking in a recent interview with Korty EO, the singer recounted how a period of personal loss and uncertainty became a turning point in his career.

According to Asake, 2020 was marked by a painful experience that felt like losing something promising, only for a new opportunity to emerge unexpectedly.

“2020 was a serious year. Life humbled me so much,” he said. “You know when God puts something sweet in your mouth and removes it? That was what happened. At that time, I didn’t realise God was building me.”

He explained that the difficult phase eventually led to the creation of his breakout line, “Me I no dey cap, me I no dey form,” which helped launch his music career into the spotlight.

Reflecting further, the singer noted that he did not immediately understand the purpose behind his struggles, but now sees them as part of a larger journey that prepared him for success.

Asake also spoke about his long-standing ambition to expand beyond Nigeria, revealing that he had always envisioned building a life and career in the United States, particularly in Los Angeles.

“Before I travelled, Los Angeles was a place I liked,” he said. “Even when I was with my friends, I told them I was going to leave this country and go to California.”

Upon eventually making the move, he embraced the opportunity without hesitation, driven by a clear vision of living out his dreams on a global stage.

“When I got to California, I was just like, ‘I will be here. Let me just live my dream,’” he added.

His reflections highlight the resilience behind his success story, offering insight into the challenges that shaped one of Nigeria’s fastest-rising music stars.

Tomiyasu Earns Japan Recall After Injury Layoff Ahead of World Cup Preparations

0

Former Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu has received a timely boost in his World Cup ambitions after earning a recall to Japan’s national team for the first time in nearly two years.

The 27-year-old has endured a difficult spell plagued by injuries, which ultimately led to his departure from Arsenal in July last year, despite having a year left on his contract. Tomiyasu opted to prioritise his recovery before sealing a move to Ajax in December.

After returning to action in January—his first appearance since October 2024—Tomiyasu has now been named in Japan’s squad for upcoming international friendlies against Scotland and England.

Japan will face Scotland in Glasgow on March 28 before travelling to Wembley Stadium to take on England three days later, as head coach Hajime Moriyasu looks to fine-tune his squad ahead of the World Cup.

Moriyasu has also recalled Hiroki Ito of Bayern Munich, another defender returning from injury, stressing the importance of reintegrating experienced players into the team setup.

“If they are in good condition, it would be a positive for Japan heading into the World Cup,” Moriyasu said, expressing confidence that both players will regain peak fitness in time for the tournament.

He added that the friendlies would help the returning players reacquaint themselves with the team’s tactical approach after a prolonged absence.

Japan have been drawn in Group F alongside the Netherlands, Tunisia and a yet-to-be-determined European qualifier for the World Cup set to take place across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Tomiyasu, who has 42 international caps, was part of Japan’s squad at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and played a role in their memorable victories over Germany and Spain before their exit on penalties to Croatia in the round of 16.

Despite his return, Moriyasu acknowledged that Tomiyasu is still working his way back to full match fitness, noting that he has yet to complete a full 90 minutes for Ajax.

The squad will, however, be without key attacking players such as Takumi Minamino of Monaco and Takefusa Kubo of Real Sociedad due to injuries.

Meanwhile, Wolfsburg forward Kento Shiogai has earned his maiden call-up, with Moriyasu insisting that opportunities remain open as Japan continues to build a competitive squad capable of challenging for World Cup glory.

“As we approach the World Cup, some may think experimentation should stop,” Moriyasu said. “But to win, we must continue to bring in players who can elevate the team.”

King Charles Urges Nigeria to Lead Commonwealth, Deepen UK Trade Ties

0

Charles III has called on Nigeria to take its “rightful place” at the centre of the Commonwealth of Nations, urging stronger collaboration with the United Kingdom to unlock barrier-free trade and shared economic growth.

The monarch made the appeal on Wednesday at a state banquet held at Windsor Castle in honour of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu.

Describing Nigeria as an indispensable partner in shaping the future of global commerce, King Charles emphasised the need for harmonised standards, regulatory alignment, and the removal of investment barriers within the Commonwealth.

He noted that initiatives such as the United Kingdom–Nigeria Enhanced Trade and Investment Partnership are already laying the groundwork for deeper economic integration, anchored on shared systems and longstanding diplomatic ties.

The monarch characterised Nigeria as “an economic powerhouse, a cultural force, and an influential diplomatic voice,” highlighting its youthful population as a key driver of innovation and enterprise.

He also pointed to growing economic exchanges between both countries, including increased Nigerian business presence in the UK, listings on the London Stock Exchange, and support from UK Export Finance for infrastructure projects such as port development.

According to him, Nigeria has emerged as the United Kingdom’s largest export market in Africa, while bilateral travel and spending continue to rise, reflecting stronger people-to-people connections.

King Charles paid tribute to the Nigerian diaspora in the UK, describing them as a “living bridge” of over half a million people contributing significantly to sectors such as healthcare, business, academia, sports, and the creative industries.

He highlighted the global influence of Nigerian culture, from Afrobeats music to Nollywood films, noting their growing impact on British society.

Reflecting on his previous visits to Nigeria, the monarch said the country’s transformation has been remarkable, declaring: “Nigeria hasn’t merely changed. It has arrived.”

While acknowledging the complexities of historical ties, he stressed the importance of learning from the past to build a future based on cooperation and shared prosperity.

The King also referenced ongoing collaboration in security and humanitarian efforts, as well as engagements with Christian and Muslim leaders in the UK, which he said reflect Nigeria’s tradition of religious harmony.

Concluding his remarks, he called for unity and adaptability in a changing global landscape, urging both nations to work together more closely. He also extended goodwill to Muslims observing Ramadan and wished Nigerians a happy Eid al-Fitr in advance, ending with a toast to Nigeria and its people.

Ado-Odo/Ota LG Chairman Lawal Wasiu presents ₦13.2bn 2026 budget focused on infrastructure, amenities restoration, and improved living standards

Inside Ado-Odo/Ota’s ₦13.2bn 2026 Budget Plan to Restore Amenities and Drive Development

The Executive Chairman of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government, Hon. Lawal Adewale Wasiu, has set the tone for an ambitious new fiscal year, unveiling a ₦13.2 billion 2026 budget proposal that he described as a decisive roadmap for growth, infrastructure renewal, and improved quality of life for residents.

Presented before the Legislative Council at the council’s chambers, the proposal—aptly titled “Budget of Amenities Restoration and Improvement”—is being positioned as more than a financial document, but a strategic blueprint aimed at reshaping the socio-economic landscape of one of Ogun State’s most commercially vibrant corridors.

Speaking during the presentation, Wasiu struck an optimistic note, framing the budget as a reflection of both government resolve and the collective aspirations of the people. “This budget reflects not just figures, but our shared vision for a better, more organised, and prosperous Ado-Odo/Ota,” he said, adding that his administration remains committed to “delivering impactful governance that directly improves the daily lives of our people.”

He expressed gratitude to Dapo Abiodun and Noimot Salako-Oyedele for their continued support, while acknowledging the trust reposed in his administration by residents. According to him, the progress recorded so far has been built on “unity of purpose, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to service.”

A review of the 2025 fiscal performance reveals a government navigating challenges while pushing for efficiency. Out of a total budget of ₦12.6 billion, statutory allocation stood at ₦11.3 billion, with an actual realisation of ₦7.1 billion, representing 62.63 per cent performance. Internally generated revenue also showed notable strength, with ₦193.9 million realised from a ₦251.9 million target, achieving 76.99 per cent. Wasiu attributed this improvement to deliberate reforms aimed at blocking leakages, expressing confidence that “the current trajectory will not only be sustained but significantly surpassed.”

On expenditure, the council recorded total spending of over ₦7.15 billion, covering personnel, overheads, and capital commitments. Despite fiscal constraints, the administration invested in key grassroots projects including road grading across wards, drainage construction, borehole installations, school renovations, and critical infrastructure upgrades—interventions the chairman described as “targeted efforts to restore dignity and functionality to our communities.”

Looking ahead, the ₦13.24 billion 2026 budget is structured as a balanced framework to address pressing developmental needs, with funding expected from statutory allocations, internally generated revenue, and state-backed support. Wasiu emphasised transparency as a cornerstone of implementation, declaring that “every kobo allocated must translate into visible impact for the people.”

The Legislative Council signalled its readiness to engage rigorously with the proposal. Leader of the House, Hon. Gbadamosi Mutairu Akanji, described the document as “a strategic roadmap that captures the hopes and expectations of our people,” stressing that lawmakers would ensure strict accountability. “This budget goes beyond numbers; it embodies the promise of sustainable development and improved welfare. We will scrutinise it thoroughly to ensure it serves the common good,” he said.

The atmosphere at the chambers reflected a shared sense of purpose, with top officials, political leaders, and stakeholders in attendance, underscoring the significance of the moment. For many observers, the 2026 budget marks a critical test of the administration’s capacity to consolidate gains, deepen development, and deliver on its promise of a more organised and thriving Ado-Odo/Ota.

As the council moves toward deliberation and eventual passage, expectations are high that the proposed fiscal plan will not only sustain momentum but redefine governance at the grassroots—anchoring it firmly on service, accountability, and measurable progress. Read More

Dangote Refinery, Fertiliser Donate N241m Worth of School Materials to 3,704 Students in Ibeju-Lekki

Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Dangote Fertiliser Limited have donated school materials valued at N241 million to 3,704 students across host communities in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, as part of their ongoing commitment to education and community development.

The initiative, unveiled during the 6th edition of the Dangote Scholarship Award Programme, saw the distribution of school bags, uniforms, sandals, and sanitary materials to 1,348 primary school pupils in five schools, as well as 2,356 secondary school students across four schools. The intervention is aimed at improving access to quality education and enhancing the learning environment for students in the host communities.

Speaking at the event, Vice President, Oil and Gas, Edwin Devakumar, reaffirmed the Dangote Group’s belief in education as a catalyst for societal transformation. He noted that since the launch of the scholarship scheme in 2019, the programme has steadily expanded in both reach and impact, supporting hundreds of students annually, despite a pause in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to him, 442 students are benefiting from the 2025 scholarship cycle. Providing a breakdown of the programme’s growth, Devakumar said 56 secondary school students benefited in 2019, while the initiative resumed in 2021 with 138 beneficiaries, comprising 117 secondary and 19 tertiary students.

“In 2022, 460 students were supported, including 443 secondary and 19 tertiary students. By 2023, the number rose to 469, comprising 445 secondary and 24 tertiary students. In 2024, 473 students benefited, including 450 secondary and 23 tertiary students. For 2025, we are supporting 442 students, comprising 410 secondary and 32 tertiary students,” he said.

Devakumar added that the company’s social investment extends beyond scholarships to include skills development and employment opportunities. He disclosed that 22 youths from the host communities recently completed City & Guilds of London certification programmes in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, with 19 already employed within the organisation.

“At the Dangote Group, our philosophy is simple: the prosperity of our communities and the success of our businesses must go hand in hand,” he said.

“Through initiatives like this, we are contributing meaningfully to global development priorities, including quality education, poverty reduction, and decent work opportunities. These efforts align with international goals focused on expanding access to education, strengthening skills for employment, and promoting inclusive economic growth.

“Most importantly, these programmes reflect our belief that no young person should be limited by circumstances when they possess the talent and determination to succeed,” Devakumar added. The programme was also supported by the Aliko Dangote Foundation with the distribution of school kits.

The Executive Chairman of Lekki LCDA, Engr. Rasaki Bamidele Kasali, lauded the interventions, describing them as impactful and timely. While appreciating the support to the 15 host communities, he appealed to the company to extend similar initiatives to neighbouring communities.

“Other communities have been craving this level of development being enjoyed by the host communities. Dangote has been trying and doing its best, and we appreciate all their efforts.

“For the people of Lekki LCDA, we say a big thank you to Dangote, and we will continue to ask for more. As we know, Lekki LCDA is the economic hub of the nation, and we have seen remarkable developments taking place,” he said.

The Onilekki of Lekki Land, HRM Oba Kazeem Olumuyiwa Ogunbekun, also expressed appreciation for the company’s consistency, noting that its interventions have positively impacted livelihoods and strengthened community relations.

“Our communities are happy with what Dangote has been doing over the past six to seven years. We encourage them to sustain these efforts, and we will continue to support initiatives that have a human face and promote community development,” he said.

Beneficiaries of the programme also expressed gratitude for the opportunity. One of the City & Guilds of London graduates, Yusiot Taiwo, described the initiative as life-changing, noting that it provided a pathway to employment with Dangote Fertiliser.

Another beneficiary, Saheed Olukayode, an indigene of Ibeju-Lekki, said the programme has renewed his aspirations and motivated him to further his education, while commending the company for its support.

The Dangote Group reiterated its commitment to ensuring that its business growth aligns with the prosperity of its host communities, with a continued focus on education, skills development, and inclusive opportunities. Read More

“Tacha Slams ‘Seasonal Faith’: Calls Out Hypocrisy in Religious Practices”

Nigerian media personality Anita Natacha Akide, widely known as Tacha, has sparked conversation online after calling out what she describes as “seasonal faith” among some religious individuals.

The Guinness World Record holder criticised people who, according to her, engage in questionable behaviour throughout the year but suddenly adopt religious practices during specific spiritual periods.

Tacha argued that such actions reflect a lack of sincerity, noting that many quickly revert to their прежvious lifestyles once the rituals are over. She questioned the authenticity of these expressions of faith, stressing that religion should be a consistent way of life rather than an occasional performance.

“The way people practice religion is almost like a joke to me,” she said. “You do all sorts of things all year, only to fly to Mecca and walk around the Kaaba, or show up in church on Sunday and sit in the front row. After the whole ritual is done, you return to your normal life.”

Her remarks have since stirred mixed reactions, with some agreeing with her stance on religious consistency, while others argue that spiritual journeys are personal and evolve over time.
