Peter Obi Condemns Attack on John Odigie-Oyegun’s Residence, Warns of Looming Chaos

Former Anambra State Governor and presidential hopeful of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Peter Obi, has strongly condemned the violent attack on the residence of a national leader of the party, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, describing the incident as a dangerous signal for Nigeria’s democracy.

Obi spoke in Edo State during a political visit that included witnessing the defection of former Labour Party governorship candidate, Olumide Akpata, to the ADC. He also paid a visit to St. Philomena College of Nursing to support ongoing institutional projects.

Reacting to the attack, Obi called on authorities to act swiftly and decisively, warning that silence could embolden further violence.

It is time to speak up. It is time those in government act. They will not be there forever. What is allowed to happen in the country today will ultimately affect all of us and the nation,” Obi stated.

His remarks come amid growing concerns over political intolerance and security lapses in parts of the country.

Odigie-Oyegun, a former governor of Edo State, expressed deep concern that the country may be drifting toward instability if such incidents continue unchecked.

He revealed that the attack followed a scheduled party meeting at the ADC secretariat. According to him, intelligence reports from a security agency warned of a planned assault, prompting the meeting to be cut short.

Shortly after attendees dispersed, armed men reportedly arrived in about ten vehicles, shooting sporadically, injuring individuals, and vandalising party property.

People were able to come in so many vehicles, shoot their way, break into the building, break the office, property and the rest of it and go away and this is a state where we have a governor and where the first duty of any government is to protect us?” Odigie-Oyegun queried.

The former governor suggested that the attack on his residence may have been connected to Obi’s presence in the state.

He alleged that there had been prior threats indicating that Obi’s security could not be guaranteed if he visited Edo without permission.

Obi was at Odigie-Oyegun’s home on a courtesy call when gunshots reportedly rang out.

“Bullets started raining all over the place in my state where I was governor. When did we degenerate to that kind of level?” he lamented.

Describing the situation as “very dangerous,” Odigie-Oyegun warned that political actors at both state and federal levels were “playing with fire,” cautioning that the consequences could be far-reaching and destabilising.

The incident adds to mounting political tension in Edo State, particularly as realignments within opposition ranks gather momentum ahead of future elections.

Observers say the unfolding events could test Nigeria’s democratic resilience, especially as key political figures call for restraint, accountability, and strengthened security coordination.

As investigations continue, both leaders insist that safeguarding democratic engagement must remain a top priority to prevent further escalation.

Why Bovi Told His Wife to Keep Her Maiden Name Kris Asimonye Opens Up Years Later

0

Kris Asimonye, wife of popular Nigerian comedian Bovi Ugboma, has shared an intimate detail about their marriage that is now sparking conversations about identity and personal branding.

In a recent post on Instagram, Kris revealed that her husband advised her not to change her surname when they got married a decision she admits she did not fully understand at the time.

According to Kris, the conversation happened early in their marriage. While many women traditionally adopt their husband’s surname, Bovi encouraged her to retain “Asimonye,” a move that seemed unusual but intentional.

“When I got married, my husband encouraged me not to change my last name. At the time I did not fully understand why.

Now, building Kris Asimonye as a brand, I understand completely,” she wrote.

The couple, who share three children together, have been married for years, building both a family and thriving individual careers.

Kris’ recent reflection highlights a growing conversation around identity, independence, and brand continuity especially for women balancing marriage and professional ambitions.

By keeping her maiden name, she has been able to establish and strengthen her personal and professional identity without starting over.

Her revelation has since drawn admiration from fans who praised the comedian for his foresight and support of his wife’s individuality.

As conversations about marriage traditions evolve, Kris Asimonye’s story offers a modern perspective: sometimes, keeping your name can mean keeping your power.

Betty Akeredolu Opens Up on Grief, Betrayal After Husband’s Death

Dr. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, widow of former Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has spoken candidly about the emotional and political turbulence that followed her husband’s death, describing the period as one marked by grief and unexpected betrayal.

Akeredolu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), died on December 27, 2023, at the age of 67 after battling leukemia and prostate cancer.

In a social media post on Tuesday, the former First Lady of Ondo State said the months after his passing revealed painful truths about loyalty and political relationships. Rather than the solidarity she had anticipated from trusted allies and associates, she said she encountered actions that left her deeply hurt and disillusioned.

Grief alone is heavy enough; betrayal layered upon loss can feel almost unbearable,” she wrote, reflecting on what she described as shocking behaviour from individuals once considered close friends and loyalists.

According to her, the experience became a sobering lesson about the fleeting nature of political alliances and the realities of public life.

She noted that several individuals she had supported during her husband’s administration distanced themselves after his death.

However, she said adversity ultimately became a teacher.

Dr. Anyanwu-Akeredolu explained that with time came reflection and gradual healing. She realised that holding on to pain only prolongs suffering, while choosing peace creates room for growth and restoration.

Writing, she revealed, became her refuge. Through her online platform on Substack, she found a space to process emotions, regain clarity, and rediscover her voice.

“Each piece I wrote was not just content; it was therapy, clarity, and restoration,” she stated, adding that her focus has since expanded beyond personal grief to broader societal issues including gender advocacy, widowhood, girls’ empowerment, public health, community development, food security, and politics.

She described the response from readers as humbling and fulfilling, saying the journey uncovered a new dimension of leadership and communication strength she had not fully recognised in herself.

Despite the challenges, the former First Lady affirmed her commitment to preserving her husband’s legacy, particularly in good governance, advocacy, and public health initiatives she championed while in office.

She also encouraged women and widows facing similar trials to remain resilient, stressing that true leadership includes mastering inner struggles and rising above betrayal without bitterness.

“What began as a search for healing has evolved into purpose. I choose peace. I choose growth. I choose forward movement,” she wrote, underscoring her resolve to move ahead with strength and compassion. Read More

Two Women Arrested in Uganda Over Public Kiss Under Anti-Homosexuality Law

0

Two women in their 20s have been arrested in northwestern Uganda for allegedly kissing in public, in a case police say falls under the country’s controversial 2023 Anti-Homosexuality Act.

Police spokesperson Josephine Angucia confirmed the arrest to AFP on Tuesday, stating that neighbours reported the pair after allegedly witnessing them engage in same-sex intimacy.

Neighbours contacted police complaining the two were practicing homosexuality and were seen kissing each other in public,” Angucia said, adding that residents also submitted photographs as evidence.

She further alleged that neighbours suspected “same-sex orgies” at the women’s one-room rented residence, claiming multiple women were seen spending nights there.

The case has been forwarded to the state prosecutor for guidance and possible court proceedings, according to police.

The arrests were made under Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act, which prescribes penalties of up to life imprisonment for consensual same-sex relations. The law also provides for the death penalty in cases classified as “aggravated homosexuality.”

The two women have reportedly been detained without legal representation since February 18.

Prominent human rights advocate Frank Mugisha condemned the arrests, warning that the law has intensified fear and vulnerability within Uganda’s LGBTQ+ community.

This underscores the grim reality we are facing on the ground under the Anti-Homosexuality Act,” Mugisha wrote on X. “We have seen a surge in a targeted crackdown… it has fueled a dangerous cycle of blackmail and extortion.

He alleged that criminals are exploiting the legislation to intimidate and extort individuals who are often too afraid to seek help from authorities.

Uganda’s anti-gay law has drawn widespread international condemnation since its passage. The World Bank previously suspended funding to the country in response to the legislation, though financial support resumed in mid-2025.

The latest arrests are likely to reignite debate over the law’s impact on human rights, civil liberties and Uganda’s global relations.

Atiku Demands Clarity Over El-Rufai’s Detention, Warns Against ‘Selective Prosecution’

0

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed deep concern over the reported detention of former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, calling on the Federal Government to immediately clarify his whereabouts and condition.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Atiku said uncertainty surrounding El-Rufai’s health and welfare has heightened anxiety among his family, friends and associates.

The former presidential candidate urged the government to disclose which agency is responsible for the detention whether the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), the State Security Service (SSS/DSS), or any other security outfit.

The Federal Government owes Nigerians clarity,” Atiku said, warning that secrecy surrounding detentions only fuels suspicion and erodes public trust.

He stressed that any agency holding El-Rufai has a constitutional obligation to guarantee his safety, preserve his dignity and grant him access to medical care, family members and legal representatives.

Atiku described as “deeply troubling” reports that El-Rufai allegedly suffered a nosebleed while in custody and that family members were denied access to him.

Such developments are unacceptable in a democracy,” he stated, adding that if authorities cannot guarantee the former governor’s health and fundamental rights, he should be granted bail without delay.

He cautioned that the government would be held accountable should any harm come to El-Rufai.

Beyond the immediate concerns, Atiku warned of what he called a growing perception of selective prosecution, alleging that opposition figures are being aggressively targeted while others are shielded from scrutiny.

Anti-corruption must not become a political weapon,” he said, insisting that accountability efforts must be transparent, even-handed and free from political bias.

The continued detention of El-Rufai under unclear circumstances raises serious questions about motive. Justice must be transparent. Accountability must be even-handed. And the rule of law must apply to all — without fear, without favour, and without political bias.

As of press time, there has been no official clarification from federal authorities regarding the circumstances of El-Rufai’s reported detention.

US Lawmakers Submit Report to White House on Alleged Christian Persecution in Nigeria

0

The United States House Committee on Appropriations and the United States House Committee on Foreign Affairs have formally submitted a comprehensive report to the White House outlining findings and recommendations on the alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria.

The report, presented on Monday, proposes measures aimed at addressing religious violence, enforcing accountability and strengthening security cooperation between Washington and Abuja.

Congressman Riley Moore confirmed the submission in a post on X, stating that the document contains “concrete actions to end the persecution of Christians in Nigeria and counter growing extremist violence in the region.”

The investigation followed President Donald Trump’s decision to redesignate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC). Trump also directed Moore and House Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole to lead a detailed congressional probe into the situation.

According to Moore, the report is the outcome of months of hearings, expert testimonies, consultations with religious leaders and bipartisan fact-finding missions to Nigeria.

During one visit, the delegation toured Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Benue State, met victims of terrorism and held discussions with senior Nigerian officials, including National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.

Moore said the team gained a clearer understanding of the security threats confronting Christian communities and broader instability in parts of the country.

The report recommends the establishment of a bilateral US–Nigeria security agreement to protect vulnerable Christian communities and dismantle jihadist networks. It also proposes withholding certain US funds pending demonstrable efforts by the Nigerian government to curb violence.

Other recommendations include:
Imposing sanctions and visa restrictions on individuals and groups accused of religious persecution
Providing technical support to address violence linked to armed Fulani militias
Calling for the repeal of Sharia and blasphemy laws
Expanding coordination with international partners such as France, Hungary and the United Kingdom

Moore urged Nigerian authorities to view the proposals as an opportunity to deepen cooperation with the United States, describing stronger bilateral ties as mutually beneficial.

He also expressed appreciation to House leaders, including Vice Chair Mario Diaz-Balart, Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Brian Mast and Congressman Chris Smith, for their contributions to the report.

The submission marks a significant development in US–Nigeria relations, with potential diplomatic and security implications depending on the White House’s response.

Alleged Coup Plot Against Tinubu: Investigators Pin ₦835 Million Funding on Ex-Gov and Associate, Key Suspects at Large

Security agencies trace ₦835 million allegedly used to fund a failed coup against President Tinubu; ex-Bayelsa Gov Timipre Sylva linked to ₦785m via Purple Waves Ltd

₦835m Allegedly Funnelled to Overthrow Tinubu: Ex-Gov Alleged Top Financier in Foiled Coup Plot as Probe Deepens

Security investigators probing the alleged plot to topple President Bola Tinubu have traced ₦835 million in funding through two private companies, with former Bayelsa State Governor Timipre Sylva accused of contributing the lion’s share—₦785 million—via an Abuja construction firm, Premium Times reports.

The money allegedly flowed through Purple Waves Limited, where company secretary John Ebokpo has been arrested and remains in detention. Sylva, who served as Minister of State for Petroleum Resources under ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, is described as the principal financier of the conspiracy and is currently at large.

Sylva has previously denied any involvement in the alleged plot. His exact link to Purple Waves Limited remains unclear—Corporate Affairs Commission records do not list him as a director or shareholder. The company, registered in March 2009 for construction and maintenance services, has reportedly shut its Abuja office for four to five months, aligning with the timeline of arrests tied to the case.

Attempts by Premium Times to reach Sylva, his spokesperson Julius Bokoru, or other Purple Waves directors were unsuccessful.

The second identified sponsor is Moses Zakwa, accused of channeling ₦50 million through Clay Ring Services Limited, a Lagos-based property renovation and management firm where he is listed as a director. Little public information exists on Zakwa; efforts to contact other directors failed, and one listed director, Benjamin Okwumabua, denied any current connection to the company.

The Defence Headquarters announced last month that investigations into the plot are complete and have been forwarded to “the appropriate superior authority.” The military stated the probe identified “several officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government,” conduct deemed “inconsistent with the ethics, values, and professional standards required of members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.”

Around 40 suspects—senior military officers from across the services, a police officer, and civilians—are in detention. They are accused of roles in reconnaissance, funding, propaganda, logistics, and coordination. The suspects were rounded up in a covert operation led by Army Headquarters and the State Security Service (SSS).

Additional civilians remain under investigation by the EFCC and SSS for alleged financing and support roles; some have received bail.

Key figures still at large include retired Major General Adamu and Colonel Alhassan Maaji (service number N/10668), identified as the alleged mastermind. One fugitive suspect was reportedly tracked to a South American country, though exact details remain classified.

The plot allegedly targeted the May 29, 2023, presidential inauguration but was paused due to funding and logistics shortfalls. It was reportedly revived in 2025 after Sylva’s alleged transfers.

Investigators say the conspirators planned to assassinate President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, service chiefs, and the Guards Brigade Commander, while seizing control of the Presidential Villa, Niger Barracks, AFN Complex, and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

Recovered items include two gun trucks, anti-aircraft guns, PKT guns, RPG bombs, AK-47 rifles, ammunition, tactical gear, four Toyota Hilux trucks, one Toyota Prado SUV, two Toyota saloon cars, and 32 Volkswagen Golf vehicles—allegedly procured for covert operations. All exhibits are held by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), with recovered funds lodged in a Nigerian Army Corps of Military Police account at the Central Bank.

Authorities are awaiting presidential approval to empanel a court-martial for the implicated soldiers, as the probe continues to unravel the full network behind one of Nigeria’s most serious alleged internal security threats in recent years. Source: Premium Times

House Committees on Appropriations and Foreign Affairs present report to White House on the alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria

US House Report on Nigeria Christian Persecution Submitted to White House: Recommends Sanctions, Fund Withholding, Bilateral Security Deal

A joint report from the US House Committees on Appropriations and Foreign Affairs has been formally delivered to the White House, detailing findings on the alleged ongoing persecution of Christians in Nigeria and proposing aggressive measures to combat it.

The submission, presented on Monday, February 23, 2026, follows President Donald Trump’s redesignation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) in October 2025 over religious freedom violations. Trump directed Congressman Riley Moore (R-WV) and House Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole (R-OK) to spearhead a wide-ranging investigation into attacks on Christian communities by terrorists and broader security threats.

Congressman Moore confirmed the delivery in posts on his X account (@RepRileyMoore), sharing: “Today, Congressman Riley M. Moore joined members of the House Committees on Appropriations and Foreign Affairs at the White House to formally present the comprehensive report outlining concrete actions to end the persecution of Christians in Nigeria and counter growing extremist violence in the region.”

“This report is the result of months of investigation, including a bipartisan congressional fact-finding trip to Nigeria, hearings with expert witnesses, consultations with religious leaders, meetings with Internally Displaced Persons, and engagement with senior Nigerian government officials,” he added.

As part of the probe, Moore led a bipartisan congressional delegation to Nigeria, where they visited Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Benue State, spoke with terrorism victims, and held talks with top officials, including National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.

The report concludes that Christians face violent attacks from well-armed Fulani militias and jihadist groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths, church destructions, and mass displacement—labeling Nigeria as one of the deadliest places for Christians.

Key recommendations include:

  • Establishing a bilateral US–Nigeria security agreement to safeguard vulnerable Christian communities and dismantle jihadist networks.
  • Withholding specific US aid until Nigeria shows tangible progress in halting anti-Christian violence.
  • Imposing sanctions and visa restrictions on individuals or groups involved in or enabling religious persecution.
  • Offering technical assistance to combat armed Fulani militias.
  • Calling for the repeal of Sharia and blasphemy laws in affected regions.
  • Collaborating with allies like France, Hungary, and the United Kingdom.

Moore emphasized urgency: “Our brothers and sisters in Christ have suffered in silence for too long. The world is now watching, and I urge the Nigerian government to take the opportunity to deepen and strengthen its relationship with the United States.

“Doing so is in the interest of both our great nations. Together, we must address these pressing security challenges and bring an end to violence against Christians,” he added.

The report builds on prior congressional actions, including hearings, roundtables, and on-the-ground visits, and aligns with Trump’s America First approach to religious freedom and countering extremism. It presents a potential pathway for enhanced US-Nigeria cooperation—or tougher accountability—if reforms stall.

Kebbi Ambush Foiled: Army General Escapes Lakurawa Attack, Troops Kill 5 Terrorists, Seize Weapons

Major General Bemgha Koughna, GOC 8 Division, narrowly escaped an ambush by suspected Lakurawa terrorists

Kebbi Ambush Foiled: Army GOC Survives Lakurawa Terrorist Attack, 5 Gunmen Killed, Weapons Seized

The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division Nigerian Army, Major General Bemgha Koughna, on Sunday escaped a fierce ambush by suspected members of the Lakurawa terrorist group near Mayama Hill in Kebbi State.

According to a statement from the acting spokesperson of 8 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, the incident unfolded as the GOC— who also serves as Commander, Sector 2 of Operation Fansan Yamma—was travelling in a convoy to visit frontline troops deployed in the state.

The convoy came under heavy gunfire in a forested, high-risk stretch of terrain. Troops providing escort reacted immediately, unleashing overwhelming firepower in a intense firefight that repelled the attackers.

“Demonstrating exceptional leadership and tactical prowess, Major General Koughna and his troops responded with overwhelming firepower, neutralising five terrorists and thwarting the ambush,” the statement read.

In the aftermath, troops swept the area and recovered a substantial cache of arms and logistics items, including one OJC gun, one PKT machine gun, two AK-47 rifles, and four AK-47 magazines.

Other recovered arms and items are a bandolier of PKT ammunition, several rounds of 12.7mm ammunition, a camel bag containing ₦840,000, two mobile phones and five motorcycles.

The Nigerian Army said troops have since consolidated control of the area to prevent follow-up attacks and to reassure local communities of their safety and security.

The ambush on Major General Koughna is the latest in a pattern of terrorist groups targeting senior military officers. In November last year, suspected Boko Haram fighters ambushed a convoy in Borno State, killing Brigadier General Musa Uba and at least four other personnel.

Sunday’s successful counter-operation underscores the heightened vigilance and combat readiness of troops under Operation Fansan Yamma as the military intensifies efforts to degrade emerging terror threats in the North-west.
