“No Regional Politics” – Works Minister Backs Tinubu, Hails South-East Inclusion and Push for Sixth State

Minister of Works David Umahi has expressed strong confidence that President Bola Tinubu will secure victory in all five South-East states in the 2027 general elections.

Speaking in an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Umahi said the president is positioned to “harvest a lot of votes” in the region. “My faith is telling me we will win the five states. I’m working for it. I’m explaining to our people,” he stated.

He urged residents of the South-East to reject regional politics, arguing that it does not serve the zone’s interests. “We shouldn’t play regional politics. It doesn’t help us. As a region, we should be able to have a handshake across the nation,” Umahi said.

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) currently governs Imo, Enugu and Ebonyi states, while the Labour Party controls Abia and the All Progressives Grand Alliance holds Anambra.

Umahi contrasted the current administration with that of former President Muhammadu Buhari, which he said largely excluded the South-East from key appointments. He maintained that President Tinubu has fully integrated the region into his government, citing the previous appointment of a Naval Chief from the zone and the current Air Force Chief.

“The president has fully integrated the South-East… The good intention is that the president has taken the entire nation as one united family,” Umahi noted. He emphasised that the region is not seeking preferential treatment but simply fair treatment.

The minister also welcomed progress toward the creation of a sixth state for the South-East, thanking the National Assembly for its role. “It’s a work in progress… equity demands that we should have what other people have,” he said.
