Bayo Onanuga has criticised Peter Obi over his remarks on public funds, citing alleged undeclared offshore assets linked to the Panama Papers

Bayo Onanuga Mocks Peter Obi Over Panama Papers Allegations

President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has criticised former Anambra State governor Peter Obi over his comments on public funds, accusing the politician of saying what he does not practise.

Onanuga’s reaction followed Obi’s assertion that Nigeria would be exceptionally wealthy if its leaders had kept public money in banks rather than allowing it to be mismanaged.

In response, the presidential aide invoked the Panama Papers, the international leak of documents that exposed offshore financial arrangements involving politicians, businesspeople and other prominent individuals, alleging that Obi had undeclared offshore assets and business interests while serving as Anambra governor.

Mocking Obi as “Saint Peter,” Onanuga accused him of misleading his supporters.

He wrote: “Peter Obi likes to say things he doesn’t actually do. Remember the Panama Papers?

“Peter Obi had undeclared offshore assets and business holdings when he was Anambra governor, as shown in the global leak reports.

“And here, Saint Peter is giving his opinion, fooling his followers.”

Obi’s comments on public funds have drawn renewed attention to the debate over accountability, financial management and the conduct of Nigeria’s political leaders.

However, Onanuga’s remarks represent an allegation against Obi, and the claims concerning offshore assets should be assessed against the underlying Panama Papers records and any relevant responses from Obi or his representatives.
