The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its determination to turn environmental challenges into economic opportunities as preparations reach top gear for the 11th Lagos International Climate Change Summit, themed “Blue Economy, Green Money: Financing Africa’s Coastal Resilience and Ocean Innovation.”

Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday at the Eko Atlantic Corporate Office, Victoria Island, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, declared that Lagos is poised to take the lead in Africa’s green transformation.

“Africa is not waiting to be rescued — we are ready to lead,” Wahab asserted confidently.

He outlined the state’s extensive investments in coastal defenses, flood mitigation systems, renewable energy, urban greening, and circular economy projects, describing Lagos as a continental model for climate resilience and sustainability.

The upcoming Lagos International Climate Change Summit is expected to bring together subnational governments, global institutions, investors, scientists, and innovators to design actionable and bankable solutions for Africa’s environmental and coastal challenges.

The summit aims to explore new financing models within the Blue Economy — a framework that promotes sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and ecosystem preservation.

At the press briefing, Wahab was joined by the Special Adviser on Environment, Engr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, alongside Permanent Secretaries, heads of agencies, and senior officials from the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources.

“Together, we are shaping a Lagos that not only adapts to change but leads it,” Wahab said, reaffirming the administration’s vision to make Lagos the climate action capital of Africa.

He added that the summit will provide a strategic platform for collaboration, innovation, and investment that will accelerate the transition toward a sustainable, resilient, and inclusive Lagos.
