Twitter Ban Was Necessary, Not Censorship, Says Lai Mohammed in Abuja Recount

0

Former Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has defended the Federal Government’s 2021 suspension of X (formerly Twitter), saying the move was taken in the interest of national security and should not be interpreted as censorship.

Speaking on Thursday in Abuja at the launch of the International Media and Information Literacy Institute (IMILI), Mohammed said the decision remains one of the most difficult he made while in office, but was necessary given the rising threats of misinformation and instability.

He argued that his stance on regulating social media had often been misunderstood, stressing that regulation is essential in the digital age.

The suspension, imposed in June 2021 under former President Muhammadu Buhari, followed escalating tensions linked to the #EndSARS protests and concerns over the platform’s role in amplifying unrest and misinformation.

Mohammed recalled that the immediate trigger was Twitter’s removal of a post by the then president, after which the Federal Government announced an indefinite ban, citing national security concerns, misinformation, and threats to Nigeria’s stability.

The decision drew widespread criticism locally and internationally, with civil society groups and foreign governments describing it as a setback for freedom of expression.

Despite the backlash, Mohammed maintained that national security had to take precedence over private or commercial interests.

He also warned that the spread of fake news has become more dangerous in the digital era, noting that misinformation can rapidly shape public perception and escalate crises beyond control.

According to him, the #EndSARS protests demonstrated how social media narratives could intensify real-world consequences, including violence, destruction of property, and loss of lives.

The event also marked the official launch of IMILI, a UNESCO Category 2 Institute designed to strengthen media and information literacy globally.

Mohammed said the initiative, which began during his tenure in 2017, aims to equip citizens with the skills to critically assess and responsibly share information in the digital space.

INEC Under Pressure as AGF Endorses Case to Deregister Multiple Political Parties

0

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) has declared support for a lawsuit seeking the deregistration of several political parties, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), over alleged violations of constitutional provisions.

This position was outlined in a notice filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja, in suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/2637/2026, according to court documents obtained by Tribune Online.

Named as defendants in the suit are the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the AGF, ADC, Action Alliance, Action Peoples Party, Accord, and Zenith Labour Party.

In the filing, submitted under Order 15 Rule 1 of the Federal High Court (Civil Procedure) Rules, 2019, the AGF—listed as the second defendant—partially admitted the claims of the plaintiff, stating its support aligns with its constitutional responsibilities.

The AGF emphasized its role as “custodian and protector” of Nigeria’s Constitution, noting that it is mandated to initiate, defend, or support legal actions that ensure adherence to constitutional provisions.

“It is the constitutional responsibility of the Attorney General of the Federation to bring, defend or support any action for the observance of the provisions of the Constitution,” the notice stated.

Relying on Section 150(1) of the Constitution, the AGF argued that its office is responsible for enforcing laws, including the Electoral Act governing elections in Nigeria.

The filing further described the AGF’s dual role as both a state advocate and defender of citizens’ rights, stressing that its intervention is in the public interest to promote justice and proper interpretation of the law.

According to the notice, collaboration with government agencies and citizens is essential to ensure effective enforcement of laws, adding that backing the suit aligns with its constitutional duty to uphold the rule of law.

The AGF also highlighted the importance of access to justice, noting that many Nigerians lack the resources to challenge constitutional violations independently.

“The Attorney General’s support helps bridge the gap in facilitating access to justice for plaintiffs,” the filing read.

It added that supporting the case would strengthen constitutional supremacy and promote accountability within the electoral system.

The AGF argued that the plaintiff has sufficient legal standing to question alleged constitutional breaches, particularly under Section 225A, which was introduced to address the issue of overcrowded ballot papers.

According to the filing, INEC lacks discretionary power to retain political parties that fail to meet constitutional thresholds, warning that the continued existence of such parties inflates ballots, strains public funds, and complicates election management.

“The continued existence of nonperforming political parties will… undermine the constitutional intention behind Section 225A,” the AGF stated.

The notice further warned that any failure by INEC to deregister noncompliant parties would amount to an ongoing constitutional breach, open to challenge through public interest litigation.

The case marks a renewed legal confrontation over the status of political parties and the extent of INEC’s powers under Nigeria’s Constitution and electoral laws.

Alvarez Rescues Atletico in VAR-Drama as Arsenal Hold Firm in Tense UCL Semi-Final Clash

    0

Julian Alvarez kept Atletico Madrid’s Champions League hopes alive with a crucial penalty that secured a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Arsenal in a nervy semi-final first leg showdown in the Spanish capital.

Arsenal struck first just before halftime when Viktor Gyokeres coolly converted from the spot after being brought down in the box. But Atletico responded early in the second half, with Alvarez blasting home a penalty of his own after Ben White was penalized for handball.

The match, defined by tension rather than flair, took another controversial turn late on when Arsenal were denied what they believed to be a second penalty. Eberechi Eze went down under pressure from David Hancko, but after a VAR review, the referee overturned the decision, judging the contact insufficient.

Despite Atletico dominating large stretches of the encounter, Arsenal’s disciplined defending ensured they left Madrid with a valuable result, keeping alive their hopes of reaching a first Champions League final in two decades.

The clash lacked the goal-fest spectacle seen in the previous night’s thriller between Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, but made up for it with intensity and high stakes, as neither side dared to make a costly mistake.

A bizarre pre-match scene saw toilet paper cascade from the stands at the Metropolitano Stadium, setting the tone for a charged — if unusual — atmosphere.

Diego Simeone’s side started brightly, testing Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya early, while the visitors struggled to assert control despite Mikel Arteta’s pre-match ambitions.

Arsenal relied on quick counterattacks, with Martin Odegaard and Noni Madueke going close, but it was Gyokeres who made the breakthrough after capitalizing on a defensive error.

Atletico emerged stronger after the break, pushing Arsenal deeper into their half. Their pressure paid off when Alvarez confidently dispatched his penalty, redeeming himself after a recent shoot-out miss in domestic competition.

The hosts continued to press for a winner, with Antoine Griezmann hitting the crossbar and Ademola Lookman threatening on multiple occasions, but Arsenal held firm under pressure.

A late twist nearly handed Arsenal victory, only for VAR to intervene and deny them from the spot, ensuring the tie remains finely poised ahead of the decisive second leg in London.

With both sides still chasing a maiden Champions League title, the stage is set for a gripping conclusion.

Tinubu Reshuffles Energy Regulator, Senate Confirms Yuguda as CBN Deputy Governor

    0

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the removal of the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Saidu Mohammed, in a move aimed at strengthening regulatory efficiency in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

In his place, the President nominated Rabiu Abdullahi Umar, a seasoned executive with over 25 years of experience across energy, manufacturing, and infrastructure. His appointment is, however, subject to Senate confirmation.

A statement issued in Abuja by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said the decision aligns with the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act, 2021, and supports the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda focused on institutional strengthening and energy sector reforms.

Pending confirmation, the most senior official at the NMDPRA will oversee operations in an acting capacity.

Meanwhile, the Senate has confirmed Lamido Abubakar Yuguda as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, following a recommendation by its Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions.

Chairman of the committee, Adetokunbo Abiru, said Yuguda demonstrated strong expertise in financial and monetary policy during his screening and was found highly qualified for the role.

“He exhibited enormous financial and monetary knowledge and no petitions were received against him,” Abiru told lawmakers while presenting the report.

The nomination received swift backing on the Senate floor, with Danjuma Goje describing Tinubu’s choice as “the right decision” for such a sensitive position.

In a rare move, the Senate granted Yuguda the privilege of “take a bow and go” during screening, following a motion by Osita Izunaso, who noted the nominee’s previous appearances before the National Assembly, including his tenure as Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The motion was seconded by Sharafadeen Alli.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio later confirmed the appointment after a voice vote, describing Yuguda as “a square peg in a square hole” and commending the President for the nomination.

The Presidency expressed appreciation to the outgoing NMDPRA chief for his service, reiterating its commitment to capable leadership in key institutions to drive economic growth and energy security.

Tinubu Elevates Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu to Foreign Affairs Minister as Tuggar Resigns for 2027 Governorship Race

    0

President Bola Tinubu has elevated Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu to the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs, promoting her from her previous role as Minister of State within the same ministry.

The appointment follows the resignation of Yusuf Tuggar, who stepped down to pursue his governorship ambition in Bauchi State ahead of the 2027 elections.

The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, Tinubu has also nominated Sola Enikanolaiye as the new Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, pending Senate confirmation. Enikanolaiye previously served as Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and International Relations.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu, widow of former Biafran leader Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, brings significant diplomatic experience to her new role. She has served as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Spain and later Italy, before being appointed Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in 2023.

Tuggar, who had held the Foreign Affairs portfolio since August 2023, resigned in line with a March directive from the Presidency mandating ministers with political ambitions to step down before March 31.

Enikanolaiye, a career diplomat with over 30 years of experience, has held key positions including Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with postings in Addis Ababa, Belgrade, Ottawa, London, and New Delhi.

Tinubu stated that the appointments are part of broader efforts to reposition Nigeria’s foreign policy for improved efficiency, stronger global partnerships, and strategic engagement. He charged the new appointees with promoting national interest, advancing economic diplomacy, fostering regional stability, and protecting Nigerians at home and abroad.

Ogun East 2027: OGD Media Office Trashes Abiodun’s Claims, Says “Search Your Conscience, Look in the Mirror”

    0

OGD Media Office responds to Governor Dapo Abiodun, rejecting claims about Gbenga Daniel’s rise and detailing events from 2003, 2019 and 2023 elections

OGD Media Office Chides Abiodun, Says Daniel’s Victories Were Earned — Not Given

The media office of Senator Gbenga Daniel has issued a detailed response to claims reportedly made by Governor Dapo Abiodun at a private meeting in Iperu, rejecting the governor’s account of key political events spanning over two decades.

In the statement dated April 29, 2026, the OGD Media Office said it had been inundated with requests to react, noting that the governor chose a closed-door setting to make claims he “has, by his own admission, never dared to make publicly.”

“Statements built on fiction are best circulated in rooms where they cannot be immediately interrogated,” the statement said.

The media office addressed two major claims attributed to the governor, including assertions that he supported Daniel’s emergence as Ogun governor in 2003 and later played a role in his election as senator in 2023. It described both claims as misleading and not supported by facts.

On the 2003 governorship primaries, the statement acknowledged that Abiodun contested under the Peoples Democratic Party but said his campaign was among the most aggressive against Daniel at the time. It maintained that Daniel won the primary decisively with about 90 percent of delegate votes and subsequently reached out to co-aspirants in what it described as a “No Victor, No Vanquished” approach.

It added that Abiodun joined the post-primary reconciliation process later than others and recalled that Daniel, as governor, went on to appoint him to lead the Gateway Oil & Gas Committee, which laid the foundation for the state’s oil and gas company.

The statement also referenced the 2015 Ogun East senatorial election, where Abiodun lost to Buruji Kashamu, questioning the strength of the political structure he now claims. It contrasted this with the events of 2019, when Daniel, then a PDP leader, supported Abiodun’s governorship bid despite internal crises within the party.

“OGD not only mobilised his political structure in support of Mr. Abiodun, he also publicly raised his hand in a symbolic show of acceptance,” the statement said.

Turning to the 2023 senatorial election, the media office insisted that Daniel’s victory in Ogun East was earned independently.

“The suggestion that his emergence as senator was a product of Governor Abiodun’s backstage choreography is not only false, it is an insult to every voter,” it said.

It added that by the time any alleged intervention took place, the primaries had effectively been concluded.

“There were no frontrunners left to persuade, only a result to accept,” the statement noted.
“A man who arrives after the contest to claim credit is not a kingmaker; he is a latecomer attempting to rewrite history.”

The statement further said Daniel ran an extensive grassroots campaign across all 103 wards and multiple local government areas, while alleging that the governor did not attend any of the campaign events.

It also cited events leading up to the official campaign flag-off in Sagamu, claiming that invitations were extended to government officials but that last-minute directives discouraged attendance.

On the issue of political structure, the media office questioned the governor’s claims and pointed to election outcomes as evidence.

“Senator Daniel’s victory was unprecedented… one of the very few not challenged at the tribunal,” it said.

The statement added that the governor did not secure victories in his own ward and local government during the same election cycle, raising further questions about the effectiveness of his political base.

It also alleged that efforts were made over three years to weaken Daniel within party ranks but said those attempts failed due to his deep-rooted support across Ogun State.

“Senator Daniel’s mandate was earned in the open, before the people, and at the polls,” the statement said.

Responding to claims of negative media coverage, the media office described them as a deflection.

“When governance falters, scrutiny is often recast as persecution,” it said.

The statement ended with a pointed remark directed at the governor.

“If there is anyone who needs to search his conscience, Governor Dapo Abiodun needs only look in the mirror.”

APC Chieftain Samuel Ajose Joins Lagos 2027 Governorship Race Amid Rising Party Tensions

    0

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Samuel Mawuyon Ajose, has officially obtained the party’s Expression of Interest and Nomination forms ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Lagos.

Ajose made the announcement on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday, describing the move as a significant milestone in his quest to lead the state under the APC platform.

“This moment is bigger than a political process. It is a personal commitment to purposeful leadership, inclusive governance, and the kind of progress that every Lagosian can feel and point to,” he stated.

The aspirant said his ambition is anchored on a vision of inclusive development and expanded economic opportunities across Lagos. He emphasized that his resolve is rooted in service and driven by a conviction that development should reach every community.

“My resolve is rooted in service, anchored in a clear vision, and driven by one conviction—that Lagos deserves development which reaches every community, creates real opportunities for its people, and leaves no one behind,” Ajose added.

Expressing optimism at the start of his political journey, Ajose noted that he is entering the race with humility and faith in the people of the state.

His entry into the contest comes at a time of evolving political alignments within the APC ahead of the 2027 elections. Incumbent governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had earlier endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor.

The party’s influential Governance Advisory Council has also reportedly named Hamzat as its consensus candidate, setting the stage for a potentially competitive contest within the ruling party.

Ogun 2027: Yayi Support Fund Crosses Over ₦1 Billion as Jide Ojuko, Segun Ojolowo, Others join Donors

    0

Momentum builds around Solomon Adeola’s 2027 Ogun governorship bid as support fund rises over one billion naira, with new high-profile donors joining the initiative

Yayi: Support Fund Crosses Over ₦1 Billion as Jide Ojuko, Segun Ojolowo, Others join Donors

An update has emerged in “Friends of Yayi Support Initiative” following a sharp rise in its fundraising efforts as prominent figures joined the donor base backing Senator Solomon Adeola Yayi in the build-up to the 2027 Ogun State governorship race

Newsheadline247 gathered that total contributions have now climbed over one billion naira, drawn from hundreds of supporters across business, political, and grassroots networks, marking a significant show of strength for a campaign that is already gaining statewide attention.

The latest update confirms that additional high-profile donors, including Chief Jide Ojuko and Hon. (Chief) Segun Ojolowo-Ojuko, among other prominent personalities, joined the growing list of contributors, further boosting the financial base of the initiative.

Newsheadline247 reports that notable figures such as businessman Ibrahim Dende Egungbohun, Bukola Olopade, Director General of the National Sports Commission, and Senator Lekan Mustapha, alongside a wide network of political allies whose combined backing reflects increasing alignment behind Adeola’s ambition.

Observers say the rising fund is more than just a financial milestone, as it points to a growing coalition forming within the All Progressives Congress and beyond. The scale and speed of the fundraising effort suggest that Adeola’s campaign is consolidating support early, positioning him as a major contender ahead of what is expected to be a highly competitive race.

For many supporters, the significance of Adeola’s bid goes beyond party calculations. His candidacy has been closely tied to renewed calls for power rotation in Ogun State, particularly the push for Ogun West to produce a governor for the first time since the state was created. This sentiment continues to resonate across sections of the electorate and is increasingly shaping the political conversation ahead of 2027.

With momentum building and financial backing strengthening, the latest update signals that the race is beginning to take clearer shape, with Adeola’s camp gaining visibility and influence as political activities gradually intensify across the state.

Senate Raises Alarm as Fresh COVID-19 Case in Cross River Exposes Gaps in Nigeria’s Health Preparedness

    0

The Senate has sounded the alarm over significant lapses in Nigeria’s public health emergency preparedness following the confirmation of a fresh COVID-19 case in Cross River State.

Lawmakers in the Red Chamber called for swift and coordinated intervention to prevent a potential outbreak, highlighting longstanding weaknesses in the nation’s surveillance systems, funding structure, and rapid response capacity.

The resolution came after the adoption of a motion sponsored by Senator Ipalibo Harry Banigo (APC, Rivers West), who, during her lead debate, warned that systemic shortcomings could further strain Nigeria’s already fragile healthcare system if left unaddressed.

Banigo disclosed that the confirmed case involves a 53-year-old foreign national who entered Nigeria through Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on March 17 before traveling to Calabar the same day. The individual reportedly developed symptoms on April 12 and tested positive on April 16 following PCR confirmation at the national reference laboratory.

She raised concerns about the case timeline, noting it exceeds the typical incubation period and may indicate possible local transmission. According to her, additional suspected cases have already been identified, with contact tracing and laboratory investigations ongoing.

The senator also pointed to critical shortages of essential medical supplies—including viral transport media, PCR reagents, rapid test kits, and personal protective equipment—as major obstacles to effective outbreak response. She added that the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) is grappling with delayed budget releases, procurement challenges, and inadequate funding since 2025.

Banigo emphasized that Nigeria’s federal and state governments must strengthen coordination and ensure sustained financing for public health responses. Drawing from past experiences with COVID-19, Lassa fever, and Ebola preparedness efforts, she warned that delayed detection and fragmented responses could worsen the situation.

She further cautioned that existing gaps may lead to delayed containment, wider spread across states, and increased risk to frontline health workers, many of whom lack adequate protective gear. Persistent shortages, she said, could also undermine public trust and weaken the country’s epidemic intelligence system.

Following deliberations, the Senate urged the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare alongside the NCDC to intensify nationwide surveillance, testing, and contact tracing efforts. It also called on the Ministries of Finance and Budget and National Planning to fast-track the release of funds and consider emergency financing options.

Additionally, the NCDC has been directed to present a comprehensive report on Nigeria’s preparedness levels, covering stockpiles, laboratory capacity, and surveillance gaps.

The Senate stressed the importance of effective public health communication to combat misinformation and ease public anxiety, while also urging state governments to boost funding, improve procurement processes, and strengthen local response systems.

Lawmakers warned that failure to urgently address funding constraints and supply chain issues could trigger avoidable public health crises, putting millions of Nigerians at risk.
