U.S. Policy Firm Flags INEC’s ADC Leadership Freeze, Threatens to Raise Concerns with Congress

0

U.S.-based policy firm Von Batten-Montague York L.C has announced plans to formally engage members of the U.S. Congress and the Trump administration over the recent decision by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw recognition of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) leadership.

INEC, earlier this week, announced it would suspend all official engagement with the party pending the resolution of ongoing litigation, sparking concerns about the implications for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.

In a statement released yesterday, the firm described INEC’s action as effectively freezing Nigeria’s main opposition party at a critical juncture, warning that it could undermine democratic participation and the credibility of electoral processes.

“The Nigerian Independent National Electoral Commission has withdrawn recognition of the leadership of the African Democratic Congress and suspended all official engagement with the party pending ongoing litigation,” the statement read.

“This action could hinder the opposition’s ability to organise and participate fully in the democratic process. At a time when Nigerians expect free, fair, and credible elections, any development that disrupts political participation, creates institutional uncertainty, or undermines the perceived independence of electoral bodies must be addressed with urgency and transparency.”

The firm highlighted Nigeria’s strategic importance as Africa’s largest democracy and a key partner to the United States in regional security, economic stability, and counterterrorism. It stressed that the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process is of direct interest to the U.S. and global stability.

Accordingly, Von Batten-Montague York L.C said it would present its concerns to U.S. lawmakers and officials to ensure the importance of free, fair, and transparent elections in Nigeria remains on the international agenda.

The firm also called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to guarantee that the upcoming elections are conducted “beyond reproach, free from doubt, and fully reflective of the will of the Nigerian people.”

Former Nigeria international and ex-Bendel Insurance coach, Lawrence Akpokona, is battling for his life at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital following a severe spinal cord injury.

Akpokona has been hospitalised since October 2025 and has undergone three major surgeries. Despite medical efforts, his condition remains critical, with urgent need for continued care and financial assistance.

The Chairman of the Advocacy for Nigeria Football Reform Concepts, Harrison Jalla, raised the alarm over the coach’s deteriorating condition, describing it as a matter of urgency.

“Coach Lawrence Akpokona has served Nigerian football with distinction. This is the time for the football family and the government to rally around him in his moment of need,” Jalla said.

The development has triggered calls for intervention from the governments of Edo State and Delta State, as well as football authorities including the Nigeria Football Federation and the National Sports Commission.

Stakeholders have urged swift action to support the ailing coach, noting his contributions to the growth of football in the country.

During his playing career, Akpokona was a key figure at Bendel Insurance and also represented Nigeria at international level. He later transitioned into coaching, where he played a vital role in nurturing young talents across various clubs.

His current condition has sparked widespread concern within the football community, with many calling for immediate assistance to save the life of the respected veteran.

Movie in the Park Unveils Workers’ Day ‘Career Edition’ After Record-Breaking Valentine Show

Movie in the Park has announced a special Career Day edition scheduled for May 1, in celebration of International Workers’ Day, offering Nigerian workers a chance to relax and unwind.

The organiser, Ihechi Opara, said the edition—powered by Campari—is designed to appreciate the dedication and sacrifices of the workforce by creating a refreshing and entertaining atmosphere.

“This edition, as the name ‘career’ implies, is a day to celebrate workers in the country. There is a need for them to relax, enjoy the atmosphere and unwind while taking a break from work,” Opara said.

The announcement follows the success of the 2026 national tour kickoff, which began with a Valentine’s Day edition on February 14 at Muri Okunola Park in Lagos, drawing over 3,000 attendees.

A major highlight of the event was the Nigerian premiere of Once Upon a Honeymoon, directed by Diane Russet, which set the tone for a celebration of love, friendship, and community.

The Valentine edition also featured generous giveaways, with three couples winning N1 million each, the best-dressed guest receiving N200,000, and five attendees going home with N250,000 apiece.

The night concluded with a lively after-party featuring music, drinks, and R&B performances that kept guests entertained into the late hours.

Reflecting on the success, Opara described the event as a rewarding experience that underscores the growing appeal of the initiative.

“Seeing thousands of people come together to share a film, laugh, win prizes, and create memories reminded us why we started this platform,” he said.

He added that the Lagos edition sets the tone for a nationwide expansion, with the next stop scheduled for Enugu as the initiative continues its mission to deliver immersive open-air cinema experiences across the country.

Attendees also shared positive feedback, describing the event as memorable and well-organised, further cementing Movie in the Park’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s fast-growing lifestyle entertainment platforms.

Dickson Leads NDC Surge as ADC, SDP, LP Heavyweights Defect Ahead of 2027

A former Bayelsa State Governor and senator, Seriake Dickson, has received prominent members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and Labour Party (LP) into the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), in what signals a growing wave of political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The high-profile defections, which took place in Guzape, Abuja, were led by Barrister Amanda Pam, a former ADC senatorial aspirant, alongside key grassroots structures from the affected parties.

Among those who joined the NDC are Farouk Dantsama, a former Deputy State Chairman of the Labour Party, and Hon. Nurudeen Bisalla, a former SDP Chairman in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), along with several ward and local government officials.

Speaking at the event, Dickson confirmed that the entire FCT structure of the SDP had been absorbed into the NDC, describing the development as part of a broader nationwide movement.

“What you are seeing in the FCT is happening across the country. This is not a regional movement; it is national,” he stated, adding that the party remains open to Nigerians seeking an alternative political platform.

Amid the defections, Dickson raised concerns over the crisis within the ADC and warned against alleged interference by state institutions in the affairs of opposition parties.

His comments followed recent actions by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which removed a factional ADC leadership led by David Mark from its portal and suspended dealings with all factions pending the outcome of a case before the Federal High Court in Abuja.

INEC, through National Commissioner Mohammed Haruna, said the move was necessary to avoid interfering with ongoing judicial proceedings.

However, Dickson cautioned that even the perception of interference could undermine public trust in democratic institutions.

“A threat to one opposition party is a threat to all opposition parties. We stand united to defend Nigeria’s multi-party democracy,” he said.

He stressed that political parties must be allowed to resolve internal disputes without government involvement, urging INEC to maintain strict neutrality.

“INEC must not only be impartial—it must also be seen to be impartial. Its image must remain above board,” he warned, noting that any suggestion of manipulation could trigger a crisis of confidence.

Providing further insight into the NDC’s activities, Dickson revealed that the party recently held its first National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, which was monitored by INEC without objections. He added that key decisions, including timelines for congresses, would soon be announced by the party’s leadership.

The former governor also warned against any drift toward a one-party system, emphasizing that Nigeria’s democratic history is rooted in tolerance and respect for opposition voices.

He cited past administrations led by Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, and Goodluck Jonathan as examples of leadership that upheld multi-party democracy.

“Leadership is not about doing whatever you can do. It is about restraint in the exercise of power for the public good and to protect our constitutional democracy,” Dickson said.

He further urged opposition parties to explore legitimate alliances, referencing past collaborations such as the alliance between the Alliance for Democracy (AD) and the All Peoples Party (APP) during Nigeria’s 1998 transition.

Reaffirming his position, Dickson stressed that both a strong ruling party and a vibrant opposition are essential for democratic stability, warning that any real or perceived interference in party affairs could weaken public confidence ahead of future elections.

Political Storm Brewing: Transport Unions Allegedly ‘Mobilised’ to Discredit Ex-Gov Amosun Ahead of Tinubu’s Ogun visit

Transport unions have been allegedly mobilised to stage protests against Ibikunle Amosun during President Tinubu’s Ogun visit, raising political tension

Transport Unions Allegedly Mobilised to Protest Against Ex-Gov Amosun During Tinubu’s Ogun Visit

Fresh controversy is trailing the planned visit of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Ogun State, following allegations that transport union groups may have been mobilised to stage protests targeting former governor Ibikunle Amosun.

The claim, made by a source who requested anonymity, suggests the alleged move could be part of wider political manoeuvring ahead of anticipated senatorial primaries within the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“There are plans to use organised groups, including transport unions, to create the impression of widespread rejection of Amosun during the president’s visit,” the source alleged.

The allegation has not been independently verified, and no official confirmation has been issued by government or party authorities.

According to the insider, the alleged mobilisation may involve coordinated public demonstrations, including the display of placards critical of Amosun and other perceived opposition figures within the APC.

“If this goes ahead, it could lead to tension on the ground, especially if there is pushback from supporters of the former governor,” the source said.

The development has raised concerns among observers about the possibility of disruptions during what is expected to be a high-profile presidential engagement in the state.

Political watchers say the allegation reflects ongoing undercurrents within Ogun APC, where rival factions have been locked in a prolonged struggle for influence.

Incumbent governor Dapo Abiodun and Amosun are widely believed to have unresolved political differences dating back to the contentious 2019 election cycle.

“This is being interpreted as a potential show of strength — an attempt to signal control of party structures and grassroots support ahead of crucial party decisions,” the source claimed.

Amosun, who previously served in the Senate, is believed to be weighing another bid for the upper legislative chamber, further heightening political stakes in the state.

Ogun State has witnessed similar episodes in the past. Internal disagreements within the APC led to dramatic scenes during campaign events ahead of the 2019 general elections, when rival factions openly clashed.

“There is concern that history could repeat itself if the situation is not carefully managed,” the source warned.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from the Ogun State Government, representatives of Amosun, or APC leadership regarding the allegations.

Makinde Crowns Ibadan Chiefs in Absentia as Tradition Meets Tension at Mapo Hall

0

History was made in Ibadan on Friday as the Oyo State Government conferred Obaship status on three prominent Ibadan High Chiefs—despite their absence at the ceremony held at Mapo Hall.

Those elevated include Sarafadeen Alli, now Ekarun Balogun of Ibadanland; Oba Oyekola Babalola, installed as Ekarun Olubadan; and Oba Akeem Mobolaji Adewoyin, who was conferred with the title of Ekerin Balogun.

The event, attended by top government officials and traditional rulers, underscored the enduring significance of Ibadan’s traditional institution. Among dignitaries present were Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Musbau Babatunde; Commissioners Ademola Ojo and Wasiu Olatunbosun; and Head of Service, Olubunmi Oni.

Addressing the gathering, Governor Seyi Makinde described the ceremony as a defining moment where history, culture, and governance intersect.

“We are not merely gathered to witness a ceremonial rite; we are here to affirm a system that has, for generations, provided structure, order, and identity to Ibadanland,” the governor said.

Makinde stressed that the conferment, carried out in line with the Chiefs’ Law of Oyo State, reflects the government’s commitment to preserving tradition while upholding the rule of law. He urged the newly crowned Obas to lead with wisdom, integrity, and a strong sense of unity.

The ceremony, however, was not without drama.

A mild stir erupted when members of the Olubadan-in-Council began arriving at the venue, drawing attention from attendees. The atmosphere further shifted with the symbolic arrival of the staff of office of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, represented at the event by Oba Tajudeen Ajibola.

The staff’s presence signified the monarch’s authority by proxy, despite his physical absence. The Olubadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, later explained through his representative that his absence was due to circumstances beyond his control, not a sign of disrespect.

Earlier, the palace had reportedly requested a postponement of the coronation, citing the unavailability of the three chiefs. However, the state government proceeded with the ceremony as scheduled, raising questions about the evolving dynamics between tradition and state authority.

In his remarks, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Ademola Ojo, described the event as a historic reaffirmation of Ibadan’s unique and structured chieftaincy system.

Also speaking, President-General of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes, Chief Ajeniyi Ajewole, praised the peaceful and orderly traditional system of the ancient city.

The ceremony officially commenced at about 11:25 a.m. following the arrival of Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal, marking a significant chapter in Ibadan’s cultural history.

Despite the successful conferment, uncertainty lingers over the implications of crowning the chiefs in absentia, as the intersection of power, politics, and tradition continues to shape the future of Ibadanland’s revered institution.

Five Rescued as Building Under Construction Collapses in Abuja, One Still Trapped

0

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed the rescue of five الأشخاص following the collapse of a three-storey building under construction in Jikwoyi District of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
The agency said the incident occurred at about 11:17 a.m. on Friday, triggering an immediate emergency response.

According to NEMA, preliminary reports from workers at the construction site indicate that one person may still be trapped beneath the rubble, as rescue efforts intensify.

In a statement, the agency disclosed that it swiftly mobilised key emergency stakeholders, including the Federal Capital Territory Fire Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nigeria Police Force, Federal Road Safety Corps, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Nigerian Red Cross Society, and the construction firm handling the project.

The Head of NEMA Abuja Operations Office, Zakari Abubakar, led the response team, deploying emergency resources from the Emergency Response Ambulance Bay (ERAB) in Asokoro to the scene.

NEMA confirmed that the five rescued victims were evacuated to the Sister Nativity Hospital for medical treatment.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing, with excavators and heavy-duty equipment deployed to locate the remaining trapped individual.

The agency assured the public that updates will be provided as efforts continue at the scene.

APC Slams Makinde Over ‘Empty Throne’ Coronations, Alleges Disrespect to Yoruba Tradition

0

The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has launched a scathing attack on Governor Seyi Makinde, accusing him of ridiculing the revered Yoruba traditional institution over the recent elevation of three Ibadan high chiefs to Oba status.

The controversy follows Friday’s coronation ceremony, where High Chiefs Akeem Adewoyin, Kola Babalola, and Sharafadeen Alli were officially installed as Obas by the state government.

Sharafadeen Alli, who currently represents Oyo South Senatorial District, is also a gubernatorial aspirant under the APC platform.

However, the ceremony was overshadowed by the conspicuous absence of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja, alongside the newly crowned Obas and several prominent Ibadan indigenes.

Reacting in a strongly worded statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Wasiu Sadare, the APC described the exercise as a “charade” and an affront to Yoruba customs and traditions.

The party alleged that Governor Makinde “installed photographs and empty chairs as Obas,” branding the move as a disgraceful act with no cultural or moral justification.

“Governor Makinde has written a bad page for himself in the history of Oyo State. This is a shameful mockery of a sacred institution,” the statement read.

The APC further claimed that the governor’s actions were consistent with what it described as his “lack of regard” for established norms, adding that the development raises concerns about respect for traditional authority in the state.

The state government has yet to issue an official response to the allegations as tensions continue to build around the controversial coronation.

Osimhen More Dangerous Than Onuachu in Turkey — Ex-Trabzonspor Coach Declares

0

Former Trabzonspor coach Sadi Tekelioğlu has rated Victor Osimhen ahead of Paul Onuachu, describing the Galatasaray striker as the most dangerous player currently plying his trade in Turkey.

Tekelioğlu made the remarks ahead of Saturday’s Turkish Süper Lig clash between Trabzonspor and Galatasaray at Papara Park.
According to him, Osimhen’s absence would hand a significant advantage to Trabzonspor, while Galatasaray would be less affected if Onuachu were unavailable.

“Osimhen’s absence is a big advantage for Trabzonspor, but I can’t say the same for Galatasaray regarding Onuachu. They will fill that gap,” he said.

He further stressed that Osimhen’s impact on Galatasaray is far greater, insisting there is currently no player in the Turkish league who poses a bigger threat.

“There’s no more dangerous player than Osimhen in Turkey right now,” Tekelioğlu added.

Both forwards are key members of Nigeria’s national team, the Super Eagles, and have enjoyed impressive campaigns in Turkey this season.

While Osimhen has netted 12 goals for Galatasaray, Onuachu has been even more prolific in front of goal, scoring 21 times for Trabzonspor.

Despite Onuachu’s higher goal tally, Tekelioğlu’s assessment underscores Osimhen’s overall influence and game-changing ability in the Turkish top flight.
