World Bank Approves $500m for Nigeria’s Agriculture Transformation Project

0

The World Bank has approved a $500 million International Development Association (IDA) credit to support Nigeria’s agricultural sector under the new Nigeria Sustainable Agricultural Value Chains for Growth Project, also known as AGROW.

The programme is designed to boost productivity for smallholder farmers, strengthen value chains, improve market access, and create jobs, while enhancing food and nutrition security nationwide. The approval date for the loan was March 30, 2026.

“Agriculture remains Nigeria’s largest source of employment, yet low productivity, limited access to quality inputs, climate shocks, and weak market linkages have constrained its potential,” the bank said in a statement.

“AGROW aims to unlock these opportunities through a results-based matching grant facility supporting agribusinesses that source produce from smallholder farmers.”

The project will prioritise key crops such as rice, maize, cassava, and soybeans and focus on aggregation, post-harvest handling, agro-processing, and improved market access. It also plans to strengthen agricultural research and extension services, expand access to climate-resilient seeds, and establish a national digital farm and farmer registry.

Farmers are expected to benefit from digital advisory services, including localized weather and climate information, while regulatory improvements for seed and fertiliser supply will enhance private sector participation in the production of high-quality inputs.

Mathew Verghis, World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, described AGROW as “a transformative step for Nigeria’s agriculture—empowering smallholder farmers, unlocking private sector–led growth, and strengthening food security sustainably.”

The six-year project, set to run from 2026 to 2032, is projected to benefit up to one million smallholder farmers and mobilise an additional $220 million in private agribusiness investment. It aligns with Nigeria’s objectives to boost agricultural productivity, create jobs, and transform smallholder farming into commercially viable agribusinesses.

Kaduna Man Jailed for Three Years for Impersonation and Online Fraud

A Kaduna High Court has convicted and sentenced Faruk Suleiman Ololade for impersonation and attempted online fraud, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission said in a statement.

Ololade, who posed as an Australian citizen on social media to deceive unsuspecting members of the public, faced a one-count charge of impersonation before Justice Jaafaru Zubairu. He pleaded guilty when the charge was read in court.

Prosecution counsel, Moses Arumemi, urged the court to convict and sentence the defendant. Justice Zubairu subsequently sentenced Ololade to three years in prison, with an option to pay a ₦300,000 fine.

The court also ordered the forfeiture of Ololade’s Redmi 15C mobile phone, which was used in committing the crime, to the Federal Government.

The EFCC added that Ololade was arrested following credible intelligence linking him to online fraud activities in the Turaki Signboard area of Kaduna.

Sowore Slams Blord’s Detention, Warns Against ‘Weaponising the Law’

0

Nigerian human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has criticised the remand of Blord in prison, insisting that incarceration should not be celebrated as a legal victory.

Blord was on Wednesday remanded for 26 days at Kuje Correctional Centre by a Federal High Court in Abuja over allegations including impersonation of VeryDarkMan, forgery, identity theft, breach of privacy, and false endorsement.

Reacting in a Facebook post, Sowore condemned the handling of the case, arguing that justice should not be reduced to punishment driven by legal strategy or technical superiority.

He also took aim at the legal team representing VeryDarkMan, including lawyer Marshal D F Abubakar, accusing them of enabling what he described as oppression.

“No one should celebrate the incarceration of any person under the colour of law,” Sowore stated, warning that such actions risk strengthening a system that weaponises legal processes against citizens.

The activist further disclosed that he had reached out to Abubakar, urging him to withdraw from the case, while emphasising that true justice must be based on the strength of evidence rather than legal manoeuvring.

Sowore added that he would push for the discontinuation of the case and seek Blord’s release, stressing that justice must uphold fairness and not serve as a tool for repression.
The case has since sparked debate online, with differing opinions over the balance between legal accountability and the protection of individual rights.

ADC Crisis Deepens as INEC Drops Mark, Aregbesola, Sparks Political Firestorm

0

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has escalated the leadership crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC) by removing the names of David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola from its official portal as National Chairman and National Secretary respectively.

In a move that has sent shockwaves through the party, INEC also announced it would suspend recognition of all factions within the ADC and refrain from monitoring any congresses or conventions organised by rival groups until the courts resolve the dispute.

The commission said its decision followed a subsisting judgment of the Court of Appeal in Suit No. CA/ABJ/145/2026, alongside ongoing litigation at the Federal High Court.

INEC further clarified that it would not recognise Nafiu Bala Gombe, who is seeking to be declared national chairman through the courts, citing the need to maintain neutrality and comply strictly with judicial directives.

National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, said the commission remains committed to impartiality, adding that the decision would stand pending final determination of the case.

The development has, however, triggered outrage within the ADC and drawn sharp reactions from political figures and civil society voices.

Reacting, ADC spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi accused INEC of acting under pressure from the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, claiming the government is “jittery” over the party’s rising political influence.

He described the commission’s decision as contradictory and biased, insisting the party would soon announce its next line of action.
Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong also criticised the move, warning of a potential threat to credible elections ahead of 2027. He alleged a “sinister conspiracy” to weaken opposition parties and questioned whether INEC’s actions could pave the way for an uncontested presidential race.

“If it is the desire of INEC for Tinubu to run unopposed in 2027, let the Commission say so publicly,” Effiong said.

Former Kogi West senator Dino Melaye did not hold back, describing the situation as “satanic and wicked,” and accusing the ruling party of attempting to turn Nigeria into a one-party state.

On a more critical note, ex-lawmaker Shehu Sani likened the ADC to a “used vehicle riddled with faults,” arguing that inheriting an existing political structure often comes with deep-rooted challenges.

Meanwhile, fresh controversy has emerged with the circulation of an alleged resignation letter attributed to Nafiu Bala Gombe, dated May 18, 2025, in which he reportedly stepped down from the party’s National Working Committee to allow for restructuring. The authenticity of the letter, however, remains unverified.

With multiple factions, legal battles, and mounting political tension, the ADC’s internal crisis continues to intensify, raising broader concerns about opposition unity and the evolving dynamics ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Keyamo Unveils Tinubu’s Aviation Reforms as Nigeria Targets Global Investment Boom

0

Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has outlined sweeping reforms by the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu aimed at de-risking the country’s aviation sector and attracting global investors.

Speaking at the maiden Nigeria Aircraft Acquisition and Investment Summit (NAAIS) in Lagos, Keyamo said the government has embarked on institutional reforms, infrastructure upgrades, and strengthened regulatory frameworks to boost investor confidence across the aviation value chain.

He noted that these measures are positioning Nigeria as a viable destination for aircraft manufacturers, lessors, development finance institutions, and other key industry players.

A major highlight of the reforms, according to the minister, is Nigeria’s improved compliance with the Cape Town Convention and Aircraft Protocol, including the issuance of the Federal High Court Practice Direction in 2024 and the implementation of the Irrevocable De-Registration and Export Request Authorisation (IDERA).

“These reforms are critical because capital does not chase opportunity alone; it chases certainty,” Keyamo said, adding that Nigeria has also cleared about 98 per cent of previously trapped airline funds, a move that has restored confidence among international investors.

Also speaking at the summit, Director-General of the World Trade Organization, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, urged Nigeria to take the lead in advancing the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM), a flagship African Union initiative aimed at liberalising air travel across the continent.

Okonjo-Iweala emphasised that aviation should be treated as a strategic economic enabler rather than merely a source of government revenue, noting that improved air connectivity is essential for boosting intra-African trade, tourism, and economic growth.

She highlighted the sector’s potential, revealing that aviation supports over 216,700 jobs in Nigeria but contributes less than $3 billion to GDP—figures she described as significantly below the country’s potential.

“A country of Nigeria’s size should be earning far more and creating more jobs from aviation,” she said, stressing the need for investment in air cargo infrastructure, airport modernisation, and maintenance capabilities.

The WTO chief further pointed out that inefficient air connectivity in Africa often forces passengers to transit through Europe, increasing costs and limiting trade, which currently stands at just 16 per cent within the continent.

Director-General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, Chris Najomo, said the summit was designed to unlock capital, confidence, and capacity in the aviation sector.

He noted that reforms such as enhanced regulatory transparency, streamlined certification processes, and strict adherence to international standards are already improving Nigeria’s attractiveness to global financiers.

Industry stakeholders also applauded the reforms, with Allen Onyema describing the developments as a “new dawn” for Nigeria’s aviation industry.

Similarly, aviation expert Obiora Okonkwo said the policy direction has boosted confidence among local and international partners, including Nigerian banks.

With renewed focus on public-private partnerships, fleet expansion, and infrastructure development, the Federal Government says Nigeria is positioning itself as a major aviation hub and a gateway for trade across West Africa and beyond.

Ado-Odo/Ota PDP Adopts Ladi Adebutu for Ogun Governorship 2027

Ado-Odo/Ota, Ogun State — The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government has unanimously adopted Ladi Adebutu as its preferred governorship candidate ahead of the 2027 Ogun State election, in what observers describe as an early consolidation of political structure within the party.

Among those present were the Ogun State PDP Chairman, Dr. Abayomi Tella, and the Ado-Odo/Ota PDP Chairman, Mr. Ahmed Shuaib, who presided over the meeting.

The motion for Adebutu’s adoption was formally moved by Chief Faluyi Abiodun from Iju Ward and seconded by Mrs. Victoria Ogunwobi from Agbara Ward. The proposal received overwhelming support and was ratified through a unanimous voice vote, sparking excitement among party faithful.

“Leave Me Alone” — Busola Oke Fires Back at Critics Over Music, Age, and Industry Struggles

Nigerian gospel singer Busola Oke has publicly addressed mounting criticism surrounding her music career, expressing deep frustration over what she describes as constant disapproval from fans and critics.

In a video shared online, the singer questioned the expectations placed on her, lamenting that her efforts are consistently met with negative reactions regardless of her approach.

I’m at a loss for what people really want from me,” she said. “There is nothing I do that is good in your eyes. No matter what I do, it’s never right, and you always find fault. Have I offended you before?”

Oke highlighted the conflicting feedback she receives, noting that she is criticised for performing songs deemed outdated, while also being judged as too old when she attempts to adapt to newer styles.

“If I sing, you will say it is not what my colleagues are singing and that it is an outdated genre. If I sing the kind of song you prefer, you will say I am too old for that kind of song. How can I possibly meet your expectations?” she asked, urging critics to “let me be.”

The emotional outburst comes amid broader personal struggles. In a previous interview with Biola Bayo, Oke revealed the harsh realities of sustaining a career in gospel music, stressing that talent alone does not guarantee financial stability.

She further disclosed that her recent reaction was fueled by feelings of loneliness, depression, frustration, and hunger, shedding light on the often-overlooked challenges faced by artists in the industry.

“We’re Better Off Now” — 2Baba Speaks on Nigeria’s Progress, Declares Himself Global Ambassador

Nigerian music icon Innocent Idibia, popularly known as 2Baba, has expressed optimism about Nigeria’s trajectory, asserting that the country is making steady progress despite ongoing challenges.

Speaking during a recent interview on Wazobia TV, the award-winning singer said Nigeria is in a better position today than it was in previous years, urging citizens to acknowledge gradual improvements.

“We are better off than many years ago. Just look at it. It’s still ongoing,” he said, noting that while the nation still faces hurdles, positive strides cannot be ignored.

On his involvement in politics, 2Baba disclosed that he had previously supported a political campaign in a neutral capacity and intends to continue contributing to national development in his own way.

The singer described himself as a “self-appointed ambassador” of Nigeria, committed to promoting the country’s image globally through his music and personal engagements.

“I will continue doing it. I will set up my own position and try to make a difference. I know where I stand… I have personally appointed myself as an ambassador of Nigeria everywhere,” he added.

His remarks come amid renewed conversations about Nigeria’s socio-political climate, with some critics referencing his classic track, E Be Like Say, as still reflective of current realities.

Despite such critiques, 2Baba maintains a positive outlook, reiterating his commitment to using his platform to inspire change and project Nigeria in a favorable light.
