Boko Haram kills nine near bombed Borno camp

0

AFP    Boko Haram fighters killed nine people from a camp that was mistakenly bombed by the Nigerian military earlier this year, an aid worker and a resident said on Friday.

The aid worker, who asked not to be identified because he is not authorised to talk to the media, said the attack happened near Rann, in northeastern Borno state, on Wednesday.

“Nine people were killed while working on their farms about three kilometres (just under two miles) from Rann,” he told AFP.

“They were all IDPs (internally displaced persons) living in the camp but used the opportunity provided by the relative calm in the area to tend to their farms for the rainy season.

“The attackers were no doubt Boko Haram and used the cover provided by the crops to lay ambush to the farmers… They attacked them with machetes and knives.

“They seized nine and slit their throats while others escaped and returned to the camp with cuts on their bodies. Some, however, fled to neighbouring Cameroon.”

Usman Wumbi, an IDP who fled to the border village of Wumbi, confirmed the account, adding: “These attacks have become frequent, especially in the rainy season.

“They (Boko Haram) regularly ambush farmers and kill them.”

Boko Haram fighters killed at least two people in a raid on Wumbi in June 2016, forcing hundreds across the border.

Details of the latest incident have been slow to emerge because of poor to non-existent telephone networks in the remote area, which has been a hotspot for Boko Haram activity.

Fighters active in the area are thought to belong to the Boko Haram faction led by Abubakar Shekau.

A botched Nigerian air strike, intended to hit jihadist fighters, hit the IDP camp in Rann on January 17, killing at least 112 as aid workers distributed food.

The military blamed “lack of appropriate marking of the area” on maps for the mistake, despite running the camp and having provided NGOs with logistical details for their activities.

Many of those in the camp were local people forced from their homes. Most were from the Kanuri ethnic group dominant in Borno state and also among Boko Haram.

Nigeria’s military considers Boko Haram a spent force. But attacks continue, particularly against farmers in hard-to-reach parts of rural Borno.

Ogun 2019: Ado-Odo/Ota PDP On Fire As Abayomi Tella, Mustapha Adekunle, Others Battle Alani Akinde, Waliu Taiwo & Semiu Babatunde !

Read Why Here

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ado-Odo/Ota local government of Ogun State may witness an implosion which may snowball into a catastrophic crisis that will affect the fortunes of the party in preparation for the 2019 general elections.

We learnt that the leadership of the PDP in the local government which is regarded as very strategic to win election in the state owing to its population and cosmopolitan nature is at each other’s throat over allegations of just three leaders’ penchant for taking decision for the entire local government without consulting other leaders of the party structure in the area.

Chief Yomi Tella

There had been widespread grumbling and dissatisfaction over the style of leadership of the collegiate chairman of the PDP in Ado-Odo/Ota local government, Chief Alani Akinde and it eventually came to a boiling point on Wednesday when a collegiate meeting of the party was called.

While the collegiate meeting was to be held in Chief Akinde’s residence, some leaders of the party led by a former local government chairman, Chief Abayomi Tella and a prominent financier cum mobiliser of the party, Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle (aka Banana) also called a parallel collegiate meeting at the party secretariat along Idiroko road, where a new collegiate chairman, Alhaji Fatai Alagbe was elected thereby polarizing the party structure.

Findings revealed that Chief Abayomi Tella who is a member of the South West executive of the PDP and Alhaji Adekunle Mustapha’s among other leaders like Elder Oke, Chief Adigun Oloyede, Hon Oluwole Abdulahi, Alhaja Nike Odutola, Alhaji Rafiu Omolade, Hon Sunday Ogunleye and a host of others decided to factionalize the collegiate leadership to protest Chief Akinde’s leadership style of imposition without consultation.

Alhaji Adekunle Mustapha a.k.a Banana

Interestingly, we gathered that the collegiate meeting held at the party secretariat had in attendance prominent leaders of the party across the 16 wards of the local government while the one held at Chief Akinde’s house was described as ‘scanty’.

Newsheadline247 understands that the break-away faction which also has an influential member of the party, Chief Femi Obanla is irked with other two members of the Chief Akinde-led group; Hon Waliu Taiwo and Hon Semiu Babatunde.

A leader in the Abayomi Tella side who craved anonymity gave us an insight into the grouse of the group thus: ‘’ Chief Akinde and Hon Semiu Bbatunde are the main culprit here. Though Hon Waliu Taiwo is a bit diplomatic in his own approach, but the brazen display of leadership arrogance by Chief Akinde and Hon. Semiu Babatunde is tearing the party apart and we can not achieve success with it. Anytime the party leadership in the State directs the local governments to take a decision, it is always between these three people, leaving out other leaders.

‘’For example, a directive came from the state that the members of leaders that will be attending the apex meeting of the party be expanded to accommodate other interests, can you believe that Chief Akinde just summoned Hon Waliu Taiwo and Semiu Babatunde and drew up the list without consulting other leaders. How can a name be submitted from Chief Tella’s constituency without him knowing about it, and many more like that.

“We have decided not to be having any party meetings in Chief Akinde’s house again. We have a party secretariat, let all decisions be made in the secretariat. Look at what happened during the last Sallah celebration, Hon Ladi Adebutu sent six rams to the local government, one was meant to be sent to the prayer ground while remaining five be shared among members. I can tell you that these three leaders took one ram each and the remaining two just disappeared. It’s not as if one doesn’t have money to buy ram, but things must be done transparently. Let us all take a decision, not that three people will decide for the multitude. It is unacceptable. Anything anybody wants to give us must be routed through the party secretariat and not any leader’s house.” The source narrated.

Meanwhile, we further gathered that while the collegiate meeting of the Abayomi Tella and Mustapha Adekunle was ongoing, information got to Hon Waliu Taiwo about the crisis and he immediately raced to the party secretariat to meet with the group.

Hon. Waliu Taiwo

“Yes, Hon Waliu Taiwo came to meet us, we respect him for that gut, we have tabled our demand for him and we are waiting to see what the outcome of his intervention would be”. Our Source stated.

When contacted, Chief Abayomi Tella confirmed that a separate collegiate meeting was held at the party secretariat, “we are all stakeholders in this PDP project. Our major concern is to win the 2019 elections. There is no crisis in our party and we respect our leaders, but due process must be followed and every member of our party must be given a sense of belonging” He said.

FC Barcelona supports Catalonia’s right to Independence referendum

AFP    Barcelona condemned a crackdown on Catalonia’s right to self-determination after 13 regional government officials were detained on Wednesday as tensions rise ahead of an October 1 referendum on independence for the region.

Catalonia’s pro-separatist president Carles Puigdemont accused the Spanish government of imposing a “de facto state of emergency” in the region, with a series of measures to prevent what Madrid sees as an illegal independence referendum taking place.

“FC Barcelona, in remaining faithful to its historic commitment to the defense of the nation, to democracy, to freedom of speech, and to self-determination, condemns any act that may impede the free exercise of these rights,” Barca said in a statement.

“Therefore, FC Barcelona publicly expresses its support for all people, entities, and institutions that work to guarantee these rights.

“FC Barcelona, in holding the utmost respect for its diverse body of members, will continue to support the will of the majority of Catalan people, and will do so in a civil, peaceful, and exemplary way.”

Barcelona have previously been cautious not to support either side of the independence debate, but have backed the wealthy north-eastern Spanish region’s right to decide at the ballot box.

“This is adhering to democracy and the freedom of expression,” club president Josep Maria Bartomeu told a meeting of club members in May.

“That doesn’t mean to be in favour of one position or the other, that would be an error.

“We respect all preferences as long as they remain respectful of others and democratic.”

Madrid has taken several other steps to prevent the Catalan referendum from going forward, including threatening to arrest mayors who facilitate the vote.

Barcelona have been consistently fined by European football’s governing body UEFA for the waving of the pro-independence ‘Estelada’ flag at Champions League matches.

Chants in support of independence are also common at the Camp Nou in the 17th minute to mark the fall of Catalonia in the Spanish War of Succession in 1714.

Togolese protest against ruling party, want President Gnassingbe’s resignation

0

Agency Report   Thousands thronged the streets of Togo’s seaside capital Wednesday after the ruling party asked supporters to march at the same time as planned opposition protests demanding the removal of President Faure Gnassingbe, the scion of Africa’s oldest political dynasty.

The rival demonstrations in Lome came a day after the opposition boycotted a vote on constitutional reform which would have included a presidential term limit, arguing that it was a ploy to let Gnassingbe remain in power till 2030.

The opposition wanted the limit to apply retroactively so that Gnassingbe, who has been in power since 2005, could not run again in 2020. His father Gnassingbe Eyadema ruled from 1967 till his death in 2005.

The opposition marches began at around 11:00 am (1100 GMT) at three meeting points.

They came after giant rallies on September 6 and 7 seeking the president’s ouster that drew more than 100,000 people on the streets — a record in a country which has been widely criticised for stifling democracy.

The protesters held up posters declaring “Faure must go” and “Free my country, 50 years is enough”.

Police and soldiers armed with heavy machine guns flanked the streets in pick-up trucks. Mobile phone networks and 3G services appeared to have been severed.

“We are not jihadists, we are not rebels,” said Abdallah, 42, a supporter of the Panafrican National Party (PNP). “We just want democracy, we are tired.”

Communications Minister Guy Lorenzo condemned what he called a “coup d’etat” on the streets.

The government meanwhile asked the opposition to show “responsibility and restraint” and warned that “people of foreign nationalities were looking to participate in acts of violence” during the marches.

– ‘Explosive situation’ –
More protests are planned on Thursday against what veteran opposition leader Jean-Pierre Fabre called “the monstrous machine that has been crushing Togo’s people for more than 50 years”.

He said there would be “no let-up” as long as Gnassingbe remains in power.

Comi Toulabor, head of research at the Institute of Political Studies in Bordeaux, called the counter-rallies by the ruling Union for the Republic (UNIR) party “a strategy to disrupt the opposition protest”.

“It’s very amateurish but it shows the party isn’t ready to give way,” he told AFP, calling the situation “explosive”.

About one thousand UNIR supporters quietly gathered on the beach in Lome on Wednesday, some sitting in the shade of palm trees.

“It is a pleasure to be here,” UNIR supporter Georgia, 34, told AFP. “We are peaceful.”

One young protester said he received 5,000 CFA francs (7.50 euros, $9) to participate in the pro-government rally.

“You think we’re here for politics?” asked Justin, 17, as his friends nodded approval.

The failure to pass the constitutional reform bill in parliament forced a referendum, which a member of the government said will be held in the coming months.

Gnassingbe has now won three elections, the results of which have been contested by the opposition.

Half of Togo’s population lives below the poverty line, according to the United Nations, despite a GDP growth rate of five percent over the last three years.  AFP

Court adjourns EFCC’s suit on forfeiture of Patience Jonathan’s $5.7m to FG

Court adjourns EFCC’s suit on forfeiture of Patience Jonathan’s $5.7m to FG

NAN    The absence of Justice Mojisola Olatoregun of a Federal High Court Lagos on Wednesday stalled proceedings on an application seeking permanent forfeiture of 5.7 million dollars belonging to former First Lady, Mrs Patience Jonathan.

The case could not proceed as judges of the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court were attending a valedictory session in honour of retired Chief Judge, Ibrahim Auta.

The case has now been fixed for Nov. 13.The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the court had on May 22 suspended proceedings in the case.

Justice Olatoregun stayed proceedings pending the outcome of an appeal challenging the temporary forfeiture of the money.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is asking the court to order that the cash be permanently forfeited to the Federal Government.

The judge, had on April 26, made an interim order forfeiting the money based on an application by the EFCC.

Justice Olatoregun had also ordered the temporary forfeiture of N2.4 billion found in the name of La Wari Furniture and Baths Ltd.

The commission said the money also belongs to Mrs Jonathan.

Jonathan’s lawyer, Chief Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), had said he filed an application for a stay of proceedings pending the determination of the appeal.

Counsel to La Wari Furniture and Baths, Chief Mike Ozekhome (SAN), said once an appeal had been entered, the lower court ought to stay proceedings.

Justice Olatoregun held that it would be in the interest of justice to await the Court of Appeal’s decision.

Mrs Jonathan, in the notice of appeal, is asking the court to hold that the law cited by the EFCC in its ex-parte application for the temporary forfeiture of the money was inapplicable.

Finance Minister, Kemi Adeosun, Gov. Amosun disagree over Ogun State’s VAT contributions

0

Yes, despite the flurry of gossip and uncomplimentary stories that trailed her emergence as a ministerial nominee then, Mr. President trusted her guts and entrusted her with the nation’s finance ministry. It would be recalled that Kemi Adeosun’s nomination generated buzz within and outside the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC), as detractors and apologists of the dark-hued financial expert engaged in a slug-fest of sort over her suitability for the post.

But Buhari went on to appoint her on recommendation from her former principal, Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State, with whom she served as Commissioner of Finance.

No sooner did Governor Amosun nominate her for the ministerial slot for Ogun State than the rumour mill set to work spinning sludge against the honour of Kemi Adeosun. Sources in Ogun State government claimed that she is to Governor Amosun what Diezani Alison-Madueke, former petroleum minister, was to former President Goodluck Jonathan. Whoever messed with her, it was alleged, did so at his or her own peril.

Top government officials allegedly caught the flu whenever Adeosun sneezed and she never failed to rub it in the face of whoever crossed her path that she enjoys a chummy relationship with Governor Amosun. She was that influential with Governor Amosun and her word became law with his unflinching support, according to her critics.

However, it’s exclusive: Governor Amosun and Kemi Adeosun are currently having a running battle over an open disagreement over the state’s contributions to Value Added Tax, The Capital NG reports.

The Finance Ministry, supported by the Federal Bureau of Statistics and the Federal Inland Revenue Service, had issued a statement, placing Lagos State above Ogun in VAT contributions. But reacting, Amosun put a lie to the minister’s claim.

According to him, the data presented by the Finance Ministry, the FBS and the FIRS, as they pertained to the contributions of the state to the VAT, amounted to “a misrepresentation.”

He said the claim that Lagos State contributed more than Ogun State could not be true, as Ogun had the highest number of industries in the country.

The governor, who was speaking during a facility tour of an indigenous armoured vehicles manufacturing company, situated in the Ode-Remo area of the state, faulted the presentation by the agencies; that out of 916 high net-worth individuals paying tax to the Federal purse, only two are from Ogun State, The Capital NG reports

“Not less than 27 high net-worth individuals in the state pay at least N20 million monthly as tax to the Federal purse”, he said, urging the agencies to cross-check their data.

The governor added that such inaccurate statistics was unacceptable, especially if foreign agencies, like the World Bank, could come and do accurate statistics about the state.

The governor’s open disagreement with the Finance Minister is, however, coming as a surprise, considering the fact the Adeosun was Amosun’s Finance Commissioner before she was given a ministerial appointment.  The Capital NG
