Ogun State PDP Chairman, Sikirulai Ogundele

The Chairman of the People Democratic Party in Ogun State, Hon. Sikirulai Ogundele has described the Supreme Court judgment affirming the Sen. Ahmed Makarfi led National Caretaker Committee of PDP as the authentic party leaders of the party as the triumph of good over evil.

In a press statement released signed by the Publicity Secretary of the Ogun State PDP, Alhaji Malik Ibitoye and released to the media few hours ago, Ogundele was quoted as saying it was time all members of the party came together to rebuild the party.

‘’We thank God that the leadership crisis has been put to rest once and for all by the Supreme Court and Nigerians now know who are the true PDP leaders. It is however incumbent on all party members across Ogun State and the entire country to come together and rebuild our party in order to take over government from the evil minded All Progressive Congress that is destroying the lives of our people through their unpopular programmes.’’ Ogundele said.

In the press statement, the PDP Chairman further explained that, ‘’the Supreme Court has affirmed that the decision taken by the National Convention of our party the 1st of May 2016 is valid and recognized by law. That means the Senator Ahmed Makarfi led National Caretaker Committee is in charge of our political party

‘’The Supreme Court has shown that the judiciary is actually the last hope of the common man. We are highly excited in Ogun State that the Hyenas and Jackals waiting for PDP to die have been kicked out of our party and this is the time we all must come on board to rebuild this great party.’’ Ogundele emphasized.

The statement which applauded the apex court for being on the side of truth and justice described the judgment as giving a new life into Nigeria’s democracy’

‘’Now that we have our PDP back, the scavengers and anarchists in the party should know they have no place here. Though, it has been a long and tortuous journey to get our party back, I want our members to still rejoice and work harder to kick out the APC government, both in Ogun State and Federal government. The Supreme Court has told Senator Ali Modu Sheriff and his co travellers in Ogun State in plain and unambiguous terms that the party’s National Convention is the supreme policy and decision making organ of our party’ With this judgment, the judiciary has breathe a new life into the PDP across the cpuntry.’’ Sikirulai Ogundele enthused.

The Ogun State PDP Chairman also expressed profound gratitude to a party leader and financier, Hon Oladipupo Adebutu for believing in the party and giving hope to millions of party members with his generosity and words of encouragements.

‘’Hon Ladi Adebutu has been the pillar of this party for the past two years. We want to express the gratitude of all our party members in Ogun State, that we appreciate him a lot.’’ Sikirulai Ogundele said.

Senate swears in Adeleke

Newly-elected senator for Osun-West Senatorial District, Ademola Adeleke (PDP-Osun), on Wednesday took oath office to replace the late Isiaka Adeleke who died on April 23.

The oath was administered on him by the Clerk of the Senate, Mr Nelson Ayewoh, during plenary.

Adeleke won the senatorial bye-election held on Saturday, defeating his closest opponent, Mudashiru Hussein of the All Progressives People’s Congress (APC).

“The development is an indication that Nigeria is going to move forward. I congratulate you. There is no winner, no vanquish.

“All our sons who are in Diaspora should come home so that we can re-position this party for a better Nigeria. This can only be possible if we are serious to change `the change’.”

In his reaction, Senate Leader, Ahmed Lawan, said that “Nigerians overwhelmingly and massively took out the PDP from the running of this country and it will remain in Diaspora.

“All the same, we congratulate Nigerians for the kind of judgment that the Supreme Court gave under this administration.

“During PDP’s administration, most of the court judgements were written at the villa.

“This goes to show that this administration believes in Separation of Powers and believes that our judiciary should remain and continue to be free in what it does,” Lawan said.

In his remarks, the President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, said that in line with Senate rules, there could not be further debate, adding that “we take note of Sen. Bwacha’s comments.”

With the inauguration of Adeleke, PDP now has 43 lawmakers while the APC has 65 lawmakers.

Lagos must stop sand-filling lagoons -Nwilo

Former Surveyor-General of the Federation Prof. Peter Nwilo has urged the Lagos State Government to stop construction Flood in a sand-filled area of Lagosand all sand filling works around Lagoon and waterfronts.

Nwilo gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Monday.

He was reacting to the massive flooding in the state, especially around Lekki, Victoria Island, Ajah, Ikoyi and Lagos Island, following  torrential rainfall on Saturday.

According to him, this is the first time the Lagos Lagoon water level is rising.

“’I do not think the water level of the Lagoon has risen like this before in the state.

“Look around you, Lagos Lagoon and all waterfronts in the state are being sand-filled for development of estates.

“This is being done without proper Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) on consequences of such development on the environment.

“The natural canal is being blocked all round the state and when this happens, the water stays with us and that is the flooding we are experiencing.

“We will work on the other causes of the flooding later and that is when we can proffer sustainable solutions to what is happening now.

“But for now, sand filing of Lagos Lagoon and waterfronts should stop,’’ Nwilo, also a lecturer at the Department of Surveying and Informatics, University of Lagos said.

Also speaking, Prof. Sylvester Egwu, an environmentalist, also expressed concern about the happenings in Ajah, Lekki axis and its environs.

“These areas have become tourist sites for flooding. Ajah area is horrible. VGC, Ikate and Jakande are in a mess. Everywhere is water logged.

“We cannot even come out of our houses, that is those of us that water has not overtaken our entire houses.

“Besides being climate change situation, all drainage systems in the area are blocked, majority of them by illegal structures.

“The drainages are not flowing. All the refuse that are not evacuated and dumped anywhere and anyhow are now in the drainages.

“We are only praying to God not to allow the ocean to swallow us up and become foods to our aquatic friends out there,’’ he said.

Egwu called for the removal of all the illegal structures on drainage right-of-way and make the gutters flow by removing the refuse blocking the free flow of water.

Mr Victor Imvebore, the Chairman of Nigerian Environmental Society, Lagos Island Chapter, said that what was happening at Lekki, Ajah, Victoria Island did not come as a surprise to environmentalists.

“Environment lovers have raised alarm severally, warned government and private individuals, especially estate developers and contractors on the consequences of blocking and building on wetlands.

“Those areas are to serve as buffer zones for excess water from the Ocean, Lagoon, seas and rivers.

“Whenever non- governmental organisations on environment, foundations and activists demand for EIAs on major projects, they become enemies of government.

“We have always known and warn that projects built indiscriminately in those areas prone to flooding are disasters waiting to happen.

“Wetlands are pooling areas for water. We build on flood plain areas and complain when our houses are flooded,’’ he said.

Imvebore said that Lagos state needed strategic environment plans on how to protect its wetlands and should not joke with EIA.

“This is just tip of the iceberg,’’ he said.

Terrorism Sponsorship: IMF to audit Qatar’s financial flows

(Sputnik/NAN) Qatar is to cooperate with the IMF to carry out audits of financial flows and prevent terrorist groups from getting financing.

“Qatar has already had a good and unique system. We have laws established against all these kinds of terrorists.

“We work with the IMF and other institutions to establish our laws and audits and reviews.”

On June 5, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates broke off diplomatic relations and communication with Qatar, accusing it of supporting terrorism and interfering in their internal affairs.

The Maldives, Mauritius, and Mauritania followed suite, while Jordan and Djibouti reduced the level of their diplomatic missions in Qatar.

In late June, Kuwait, acting as a mediator in the crisis, handed over to Doha the ultimatum of the four Arab states with 13 demands, including the requests to severe Qatar’s relations with Iran.

Others are for it to close Turkey’s military base in Qatar and shut down Al Jazeera TV channel, as well as to end support for the Muslim Brotherhood, a terrorist organisation banned in Russia.

On July 5, the four Arab states confirmed Doha’s refusal to comply with their demands and expressed regret over such a position.

The ceremonies have ended. The husband has taken his wife home, savouring without restrains or inhibitions each other’s warmth and company, as the process of increasing Nigeria’s population is intensified.

It was a spectacular show of glamour and opulence in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, by the elite members of the Nigerian society, politicians, captains of industries and service chiefs who thronged the ancient city for the society wedding of the daughter of Governor Ibikunle Amosun, Miss Ayomide Amosun, and Mr. Oladipupo Dabiri; son of former House of Representatives member and Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari, on Nigerians in Diaspora, Abike Dabiri – Erewa.

Interestingly, Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi would never forget the event in a long time. Ooni had undiluted fun, no doubt. But the fun was cut short when someone stole his mobile phone and that of his friend, Jide Fadairo.  Ooni was more angry. His boys were devastated. They wept and wailed like banshee. Nothing happened.

Reports also have it that several other dignitaries’ phones were stolen including four governors.

Azuka Ogujiuba of Media Room Hub reported the theft. She also claimed that her friend’s phone was also stolen along with N30,000 from her purse.

Azuka wrote, ”The royal fathers were in the building at the Dabiri and Amosu’s wedding in Abeokuta I am still in awe of how the Ooni’s phone, his best friend Jide Fadairo’s phone and four governors phone was stolen at the wedding? I mean what about their security details, were they dozing or what? Even on our table my friend @winolive iphone and 30k was nicked from her purse and immediately l mounted more security on my iPhone 7, because it is just 2 weeks old, l know l will faint in that hall if my own joins the missing ones or the thief will steal me along o”

UK will not support break-up of Nigeria – Envoy

The United Kingdom has denied insinuation that it is in support of any agitation for the break-up of Nigeria.

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Paul Thomas Arkwright, said on Friday that the British government was not supporting those calling for the secession in Nigeria.

The UK said it would always support Nigeria’s unity and ensure the progress of the country as usual.

Arkwright spoke in Ilorin, Kwara State , when a paid a courtesy visit to the state House of Assembly where he met with the Speaker, Dr Ali Ahmed and other principal officers of the house.

“In a word, no, we don’t have anything to do with anyone agitating for break-up of Nigeria.

“We’re strongly in support of the unity of Nigeria and the federal government of Nigeria. And that’s what the British government has consistently supported and we don’t have interest or support any one agitating for the break- up of Nigeria.

“For anyone to say the British governmental is involved in any way in the break-up of Nigeria is completely wrong,” he said.

Osun bye-election: PDP’s Adeleke ahead in protest vote

He described Nigeria’s democratic situation as delicate, but commended efforts at upholding democratic tenets and keeping the flame of democracy alive.

France, an ally of defunct Biafra in 1967, had similarly denounced any further step to actualise the secession of South East from Nigeria.

The country said that such a move had been overtaken by events and no longer in support of break-up of any part of Nigeria.

France’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Denys Gauer, said his country would not in any way work with any group agitating for the dismemberment of Nigeria.

He said France was working with Nigeria and supporting it as a country.

He spoke against the backdrop of France’s previous support for Biafra during Nigeria’s civil war.

Gauer pointed out that Nigeria has evolved since the civil war.

France has been cooperating with the country to overcome its challenges, especially the fight against insurgency.
