Fresh Trial Looms for Former Jigawa Governor Sule Lamido, Sons as EFCC Files ₦1.3bn Fraud Case

EFCC will arraign former Jigawa governor Sule Lamido, his sons and two companies on April 1, 2026 over an alleged ₦1.3 billion fraud case following a Supreme Court ruling

EFCC to Arraign Ex-Jigawa Gov Sule Lamido, Sons Over Alleged ₦1.3bn Fraud April 1

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) will on April 1, 2026, arraign former Sule Lamido, ex-governor of Jigawa State, before the Federal High Court Maitama in Abuja for the commencement of a fresh trial over an alleged ₦1.3 billion fraud.

Lamido will be arraigned alongside his two sons, Aminu Lamido and Mustapha Lamido, as well as two companies linked to them — Bamaina Holdings Ltd and Speeds International Ltd.

According to the anti-graft agency, the alleged offences involve kickbacks and fictitious contract awards that reportedly took place while Lamido served as governor between 2007 and 2015.

The new arraignment date followed the failure of the defendants to appear in court during the earlier scheduled hearing on March 13, 2026.

Defence counsel Joe Agi, SAN, apologised to the court for the aborted arraignment, explaining that the defendants were unable to attend due to the short notice of the hearing date.

He assured the court that they would be present on the rescheduled date.

However, prosecution counsel Chile Okoroma, SAN, expressed dissatisfaction with the absence of the defendants, insisting that they had been properly served the court documents.

During proceedings, the prosecution also disclosed that it had written to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, John Tsoho, requesting that the original trial judge, Ijeoma Ojukwu, who has since been transferred to Calabar, be reassigned to Abuja to continue the case.

Justice Peter Odo Lifu, who is currently presiding over the matter, described the request as an administrative issue that would be determined by the Chief Judge.

He subsequently fixed April 1, 2026 for the fresh arraignment.

The EFCC initially filed charges against Lamido and the other defendants in 2015, accusing them of money laundering, official corruption, and abuse of office involving ₦1.3 billion.

The case, which began before Justice Ojukwu, included a 27-count charge.

During the trial, the prosecution called about 17 witnesses before closing its case.

The defendants later filed a no-case submission, arguing that the prosecution had failed to present sufficient evidence to require them to defend themselves.

In November 2022, Justice Ojukwu dismissed the application and ordered them to enter their defence.

Instead of proceeding with their defence, the defendants challenged the ruling at the Court of Appeal Nigeria.

In July 2023, the appellate court upheld the no-case submission and discharged the defendants, ruling that the Federal High Court in Abuja lacked jurisdiction, and that the trial should have taken place in Jigawa State where the alleged offences occurred.

However, the EFCC escalated the matter to the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

In a unanimous judgment delivered on January 16, 2026, a five-member panel led by Abubakar Umar overturned the Court of Appeal ruling.

The apex court held that the defendants have a case to answer and ordered the matter returned to the Federal High Court for continuation of trial.

The Supreme Court decision effectively revived the corruption case and paved the way for the fresh arraignment of Lamido and the other defendants, nearly a decade after the charges were first filed.

With the new arraignment scheduled for April 1, the long-running case is set to resume at the Federal High Court in Abuja. Read More

NIS Witness Tells Court: Ozekhome, Useni Presented ‘Fake Passport’ in London Property Claim

0

A prosecution witness has told a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) that a Nigerian international passport allegedly used in a London property claim involving senior lawyer Mike Agbedor Abu Ozekhome and Ponfa Useni was fake and not issued by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).

The two defendants are being prosecuted by the office of the Attorney General of the Federation on a 12-count charge bordering on alleged forgery, impersonation and the use of falsified documents to claim ownership of a property in London said to be linked to the late former FCT Minister, Jeremiah Useni.

Testifying during Friday’s hearing, Aridegbe Akeem, a Principal Staff Officer to the Comptroller-General of the NIS, said the passport bearing the name Tali Shani with number A07535463 was not issued by the immigration service.

Led in evidence by prosecuting counsel Rotimi Oyedepo, Akeem told the court that a search conducted on the NIS database showed no record of the passport.

“The passport bearing the name Tali Shani is not in our database. The passport belonging to Tali Shani is fake,” the witness said.

According to him, the NIS received letters from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) requesting authentication of two passports belonging to Ponfa Useni and Tali Shani.

He explained that while the passport belonging to Useni was confirmed as genuine, the one issued in the name of Tali Shani had no record in the NIS system.

Akeem further told the court that the findings were communicated to the EFCC after the verification process.

Explaining the standard procedure for issuing Nigerian international passports, the witness said applicants must first make an online payment, after which the system generates records linked to the applicant’s documents, including the National Identification Number (NIN).

He added that Nigerian passports are encrypted into the database of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), enabling border authorities worldwide to access biometric data.

“Any passport issued by the NIS goes through a systematic process before final production. But such was not the case with Tali Shani. When the name was inserted into the system, no record was found,” Akeem said.

The witness also told the court that the NIS had no record of any officer named Abdulkadir Lawal, who allegedly wrote a letter connected to the passport verification.

He said searches conducted within the NIS Legal Unit, nominal roll and the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) revealed that no such officer exists in the service.

“We discovered that the letter written by Abdulkadir Lawal did not emanate from the NIS, implying that the letter is fake,” Akeem stated.

During the proceedings, the prosecution tendered several documents through the witness, including EFCC correspondence to the NIS, the agency’s responses and copies of both the genuine and disputed passports.

Under cross-examination by defence counsel Tayo Oyetibo, the witness said he became a Principal Staff Officer in December 2023 and had previously been on out-post duty outside Nigeria before July of that year.

Following arguments by counsel, Justice Chizoba Oji adjourned the case until April 15 for continuation of trial.

Tinubu Sets Up Presidential Petroleum Reform Task Force, Targets $10bn Investment Boost

0

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a Presidential Petroleum Reform and Value Optimisation Task Force aimed at driving the next phase of structural reforms in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

The task force will be chaired by Fola Adeola, co-founder of Guaranty Trust Bank and founder of Fate Foundation, according to a statement issued Friday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Adeola will lead a team of industry and financial sector experts tasked with designing execution-ready reform blueprints to consolidate ongoing reforms, unlock new investments and position Nigeria as a leading global energy investment destination.

Other members of the task force include Ademola Adeyemi-Bero, Osagie Okunbor, Abubakar Suleiman, Adaeze Aguele, Farouk Gumel, Phillipa Osakwe-Okoye, and Seyi Bella, while Mofoluwasho Fadayomi will serve as secretary.

The Presidency described the task force as a high-level, time-bound executive working group responsible for crafting practical policy frameworks and implementation strategies to boost competitiveness, transparency and value creation in Nigeria’s petroleum industry.

“The initiative reflects the President’s commitment to transforming Nigeria’s petroleum industry into a more competitive, transparent and value-maximising sector capable of driving long-term economic growth, macroeconomic resilience and industrial development,” the statement noted.

Unlike conventional committees, the task force will operate as a technical reform body, consulting operators, regulators, investors and civil society stakeholders while focusing on actionable policy design.

The body will report directly to President Tinubu and submit monthly progress reports. An interim report is expected within three months, while the final reform proposals are scheduled for delivery within six months of its inauguration.

The task force is expected to produce three key reform frameworks.

The first is an Implementation Toolkit for Immediate Structural Fixes, which will contain draft legislative amendments, executive instruments and proposals for institutional restructuring within the petroleum sector.

The second is the Capital and Liquidity Acceleration Blueprint, designed to unlock between $5 billion and $10 billion in sectoral liquidity while safeguarding Nigeria’s sovereign interests.

The third deliverable is a National Energy Transformation Strategy, a ten-year roadmap for the petroleum sector that will include measurable targets for crude oil production, foreign exchange earnings, GDP contribution and global cost competitiveness.

President Tinubu has directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies, regulators and institutions in the oil and gas sector to provide full technical support to the task force.

They have also been instructed to submit inventories of their ongoing initiatives to ensure alignment with the new reform framework.

Additionally, all committees and reform working groups operating within the petroleum sector have been directed to harmonise their activities, reporting structures and programmes with the new task force to eliminate duplication and improve coordination.

The Presidency said the move is designed to streamline reform efforts, strengthen governance structures and optimise Nigeria’s energy resources for sustainable economic transformation.

The task force will automatically dissolve after submitting its final report and receiving presidential approval.

Ogun Govt., Ado-Odo/Ota LG Set To Relocate Roadside Traders in Sango-Ota, Move To End Rising Accident Risks

Ogun State Government and Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government move to end roadside trading around Sango-Ota Tollgate, announcing relocation of traders and parks from March 16, 2026

Ogun Govt, Ado-Odo/Ota LG Move to End Roadside Trading Around Sango-Ota Tollgate Ogun

The Ogun State Ministry of Environment has partnered with the Ado‑Odo/Ota Local Government to address the persistent challenge of roadside trading and illegal roadside parking along the busy Sango‑Ota corridor.

The initiative followed a working visit by the Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, to the council secretariat, where he was received by the Chairman of the local government, Lawal Adewale Wasiu.

During the visit, officials from the state Ministry of Environment and representatives of the local government inspected key locations, including the Sango‑Ota Tollgate, the Sango Under Bridge, and a proposed new site designated for the relocation of market activities, transport parks, and garages within the Sango-Ota axis.

According to a statement by Alabi Sheriff, Chief Information and Public Relations Officer of Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government, the inspection was part of coordinated efforts to restore order and improve environmental safety in the area.

Speaking during the inspection, Commissioner Oresanya announced that roadside parking and commercial activities around the Tollgate and Sango-Ota areas will be officially relocated to Sango Garage and other approved trading locations beginning Monday, March 16, 2026.

He explained that the decision was taken primarily to prevent accidents and safeguard lives along the heavily trafficked corridor.

“Roadside parking and related commercial activities around the Tollgate and Sango-Ota areas will be officially relocated to Sango Garage and other designated trading locations beginning Monday, 16th March, 2026,” he said.

Oresanya noted that the government could no longer ignore the dangers posed by roadside trading, particularly accidents caused by brake failures.

The commissioner stressed that roadside trading, parks, and garages around the Tollgate area and the Sango-Ota under bridge must cease operations immediately.

He added that the relocation exercise would be strictly enforced with the support of security agencies operating within the local government area.

The move, according to him, forms part of broader efforts by the state government to improve traffic flow, environmental sanitation, and public safety across the state.

In his remarks, the Chairman of Ado‑Odo/Ota Local Government Area, Hon. Lawal Adewale Wasiu, commended the Ogun State Government for collaborating with the council to restore order and environmental sanity within the Sango-Ota axis.

He noted that the strategic location of the local government near Lagos State should reflect a higher standard of organization and development.

“However, efforts to achieve this have often been hindered by non-compliance from some residents and traders,” he said.

The chairman reiterated that his administration is committed to working closely with the Ministry of Environment to ensure the success of the relocation exercise.

He further lamented that several lives had been lost in accidents caused by brake failures around the Tollgate area, stressing that the safety of residents remains the government’s priority.

“As the Chief Security Officer of the local government, the council will take all necessary steps to safeguard lives and properties,” he assured.

Officials from the Ogun State Waste Management Authority were also present during the visit and pledged to intensify efforts to ensure residents are properly connected to approved waste management operators for effective waste disposal across the council area.

The inspection visit was attended by several government officials including, Hon. Farouk Akintunde, Special Adviser, Ogun State Waste Management Authority; Dr. Lawal Kafayat, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment; and Hon. Femi Akinwumi, Senior Special Assistant on Environment. Also present were engineers and other representatives from the Ministry of Environment.

The Local Government Chairman was accompanied by; Mr. Muhammed Ogabi, Secretary to the Local Government; Hon. Joel Okeodebija, Councillor representing Sango Ward; Mr. Wale Anjorin, Supervisor for Works and Housing; Mr. Razak Paul Oyekan, Supervisor for Health and Environment; and Mr. Bojinu Shedrack, Supervisor for Information, Education, Youth and Sports

Officials say the collaboration between the state government and the local council marks a major step toward improving road safety, restoring environmental order, and preventing further accidents along the Sango-Ota corridor. Read More
