Over 500 PDP members from Ofoni communities in Bayelsa State defect to APC, with party leaders welcoming the move and expressing confidence ahead of future elections

Major Political Shift in Bayelsa as Over 500 PDP Members Join APC

A major political shift has occurred in Bayelsa State as more than 500 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defectors, who are kinsmen of the late Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, were formally received into the APC during a political gathering in the state.

Governor Douye Diri, represented by the Deputy Governor Dr. Peter Akpe, welcomed the new members into the ruling party, assuring them that the APC in Bayelsa operates an inclusive structure with no discrimination.

Speaking during the reception ceremony, Akpe congratulated the defectors for what he described as a bold political decision and encouraged others who are still outside the party to join.

He emphasised that the APC in Bayelsa is strengthening its political structure and is well positioned to win upcoming elections in the state.

Leading the group of defectors was Dr. Christopher Ewhrudjakpo, a retired Permanent Secretary and elder brother of the late deputy governor.

Dr. Ewhrudjakpo, who currently serves as Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, said the decision by members of the Ofoni communities was influenced by their confidence in the leadership of Governor Diri.

The defectors are largely from Wards 3 and 4 of Ofoni Federated Communities in Constituency One of Sagbama Local Government Area.

He noted that the current Deputy Governor also hails from the same state constituency as the late deputy governor.

According to him, the people of Ofoni appreciate the support they have received from the governor.

“Governor Diri has been very generous to the Ofoni people, adding that where he leads, they will follow.”

Several political leaders and government officials attended the event, including former Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development Kemi Prefa, Director of Transportation at Government House Chief Lucky Youbougha, and Director-General of the Bayelsa State Microfinance and Enterprise Development Agency Barr. Embeleakpo Apere.

Others present included APC Sagbama West Senatorial Vice Chairman Mr. Akwaka B. Akwaka, Assistant Publicity Secretary of APC Bayelsa Hon. Kemenanaebi Ogbe, and APC Chairman in Sagbama Hon. Arioka Uhwoma.

Also in attendance were APC Sagbama Secretary Hon. Obidake Funkeyi Kerry, Coordinator of Renewed Hope Ambassadors in Sagbama Chief Okubokakpo Ombu, Hon. Ayakeme Whisky, Engineer Olice Kemenanabo, and other government functionaries.

Political analysts say the defection of more than 500 members could further reshape political alignments in Bayelsa as parties continue to consolidate their support base ahead of future elections.

The APC leadership in the state believes the influx of new members will strengthen the party’s grassroots presence and expand its political reach across local communities. Read More

Elumelu Meets Macron, Calls For Global Alliance To Create Jobs For African Youth

Elumelu Meets Macron, Calls For Global Alliance To Create Jobs For African Youth

Leading African investor and philanthropist Tony Elumelu has called for stronger collaboration between Africa’s private sector and global partners to tackle youth unemployment and unlock opportunities for the continent’s growing population.

Elumelu made the call following a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron and fellow leaders of the Africa France Impact Coalition in Paris, where discussions focused on the economic future of Africa and the critical role of young people in shaping it.

Reflecting on the conversation, the master entrepreneur said the dialogue repeatedly returned to one central reality about the continent.

“In Paris, I sat with President Emmanuel Macron and fellow leaders of the Africa France Impact Coalition, and our conversation kept returning to the same truth: Africa’s greatest asset is her youth,” he disclosed.

However, the leading investor warned that the promise of Africa’s youthful population could easily become a missed opportunity if governments and global partners fail to create the enabling conditions for employment and enterprise.

“But potential without opportunity is a promise broken. To me, joblessness is the betrayal of a generation,” the Chairman of one of the continent’s biggest employers of Labour, United Bank for Africa (UBA) pointed out.

Home to one of the world’s fastest-growing youth populations, Africa faces a pressing challenge of creating millions of jobs annually to absorb new entrants into the labour market.

Elumelu revealed the solution lies in entrepreneurship, access to capital, and stronger partnerships that connect African innovators to global markets.

“Africa’s young people are talented, entrepreneurial, and ambitious. What they need is access to opportunity, capital, mentorship, and markets,” he insisted.

The role model therefore urged deeper cooperation between African institutions and international partners to scale opportunities for entrepreneurs across the continent.

“That is why I called for deeper collaboration — a partnership between Africa’s private sector and global leaders that meets the scale of the opportunity before us,” he emphasised.

The champion of industry also recalled the impact of Macron’s 2018 visit to Nigeria, when the French president addressed thousands of young African innovators, describing it as a moment that energised the continent’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.

“When President Macron visited Nigeria in 2018 and addressed over 3,200 young African entrepreneurs, the impact reverberated for years,” he disclosed, urging “We must recreate that momentum, and go even further.”

As part of efforts to sustain that momentum, Elumelu announced that the Tony Elumelu Foundation will empower an additional 3,200 young African entrepreneurs later this month.

“On March 22, the Tony Elumelu Foundation will empower an additional 3,200 young African entrepreneurs, continuing our mission to catalyse Africa’s private sector,” he stated.

Since launching the foundation in 2010, Elumelu said the organisation has played a significant role in supporting entrepreneurship across the continent through funding, training, and mentorship.

Findings revealed that,  the initiative has disbursed more than $100 million in seed capital to over 24,000 entrepreneurs while providing business training to about 2.5 million young Africans through its digital platform.

The programme has also helped stimulate job creation and economic growth across multiple sectors.

Multiple sources confirmed that the foundation has enabled the creation of over 1.5 million direct and indirect jobs across the continent, while helping to lift over 2 million Africans out of poverty.

Entrepreneurs supported through the programme have collectively generated more than $4.2 billion in revenue, with women accounting for nearly half of the beneficiaries according to records.

“We have achieved 46 percent women participation, reinforcing our commitment to inclusive growth,” he affirmed.

Elumelu, one of Africa’s most influential business leaders, has long championed the concept of Africapitalism — the belief that the private sector must play a leading role in driving economic development and social transformation across the continent.

Through his business interests and philanthropic initiatives, he has consistently advocated entrepreneurship as a key pathway for tackling unemployment and poverty in Africa.

Despite the progress made so far, the investor believes much more remains to be done.

“And yet, we are only scratching the surface,” he said, stressing that strategic alliances between African institutions and international partners — including France — will be critical in accelerating innovation, entrepreneurship, and job creation.

“Strategic partnerships between African institutions and global partners — including France — is key in accelerating entrepreneurship, innovation, and job creation across Africa,” Elumelu added, insisting “Our work continues.” Read More

King Mitchy Publicly Apologises for Controversial Online Behaviour, Kneels Before Ooni of Ife

Content creator and philanthropist Mitchell Mukoro, popularly known as King Mitchy, has publicly apologised for her recent controversial online actions, including consuming a substance during a live video.

In a heartfelt statement, she extended apologies to Seyi Tinubu Tinubu”], activist VeryDarkMan”,“Nigerian social activist”], the Ooni of Ife, and Nigerians, acknowledging her wrongdoing and expressing regret for disappointing young girls who look up to her.

“Good morning Nigerians. I’m ready to be held accountable for my actions. For some days I’ve thought about my behaviour and I know that I was wrong and I want to be held accountable. For the substance I took on live video, that was very wrong of me because there are young girls that are looking up to me one day and I know I disappointed a lot of people. That was wrong of me, I was wrong,” she said.

Addressing Seyi Tinubu, she added:

“I’m so sorry. I know I apologised privately but I disrespected you publicly, so I want to apologise publicly. I’m so sorry sir. I want you to know that I will never take your support for granted.”

To the Ooni of Ife, King Mitchy knelt and said,

“I’m so sorry, sir. I’m so sorry for bringing your name into this, I’m so sorry daddy.”

Speaking to VeryDarkMan, whom she described as her “brother,” she admitted understanding his advocacy:

“You’re fighting for Nigerians and we can make Nigeria a better place and I’m sorry for coming at you like that. Maybe now I understand you better because I had to step back and see the kind of person you are.”

The controversy began in late February when King Mitchy announced plans to renovate a dilapidated school in six days, sparking a feud with VeryDarkMan, who accused her of being used to improve the image of Seyi Tinubu’s administration. She also drew criticism after sharing what appeared to be a private chat with the Ooni of Ife.

The situation escalated when a live video showed her distraught and reportedly ingesting a substance thought to be bleach. Her management initially announced her death on Instagram but later retracted the claim, confirming she was alive and recovering.

Seyi Tinubu denied any involvement in the feud, stating he had met King Mitchy only once to support her NGO initiatives. VeryDarkMan had previously alleged that Seyi Tinubu was financing her projects and threatening his life, claims Seyi Tinubu denies.

King Mitchy’s public apology appears to mark a turning point in the saga, as she takes responsibility for her online behaviour and seeks reconciliation with those affected.

Michael Owen Backs Michael Carrick for Permanent Man United Role After Impressive Run

0

Former Manchester United winger Michael Owen has voiced surprise at doubts over Michael Carrick becoming the permanent manager of Manchester United.

Carrick, 44, was appointed caretaker head coach in January following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim. Since taking charge, the former United midfielder has guided the team to six victories in eight matches, propelling the club from sixth to third place in the Premier League table.

Speaking on the BBC podcast The Wayne Rooney Show on Friday, Owen praised Carrick for restoring calm at Old Trafford and said he deserves serious consideration for the permanent role.

“I can’t believe people are questioning whether he should get the job. Manchester United have waited about 12 years. They’ve gone for proven managers and legends since the days of Alex Ferguson. The one time they are starting to play well, getting results and the fans are on board, you’re telling me if he finishes third they’ll say ‘thanks, but no thanks’? How is that possible,” Owen said.

Carrick, who made 464 appearances for United during his playing career, was part of the club’s success under Ferguson.

Former United striker Wayne Rooney also lauded Carrick’s performance, calling his work “unbelievable” and noting that while many at the club support Carrick, there is caution over the risk if the appointment does not succeed.

Despite Carrick’s strong run, Manchester United are reportedly assessing other candidates before deciding on a permanent manager ahead of next season.

Tinubu Loyalist Urges Obasanjo, IBB, Gowon, Others to Back President’s Peace Agenda

0

A Bauchi-based political leader and loyalist of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Khamis Musa Darazo, has called on prominent Nigerian elder statesmen to support the President’s efforts to strengthen peace and stability across the country.

In a statement issued to journalists in Bauchi, Darazo appealed to respected national figures including Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, Olusegun Obasanjo, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, Yakubu Gowon and Abdulsalami Abubakar to lend their experience and influence to the administration’s peace-building agenda.

Darazo described the elder statesmen as “guardians of Nigeria’s history, unity, and statecraft,” noting that their counsel could play a vital role in guiding the nation through current challenges.

“At this defining moment in our nation’s journey, I call on TY Danjuma, Obasanjo, IBB, Gowon and Abdulsalami Abubakar to join hands with President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Their wisdom and counsel are essential to ensuring lasting peace across Nigeria,” he said.

According to him, the Tinubu administration has placed strong emphasis on security and peace-building under its Renewed Hope Agenda.

However, he stressed that sustainable stability requires collective leadership that combines the experience of past national leaders with the vision of the current government.

“Each of these elder statesmen has played a pivotal role in preserving Nigeria’s unity at different times. Their collective voice carries moral authority and will strengthen public confidence in the government’s security initiatives,” Darazo added.

He further noted that achieving lasting peace in Nigeria requires collaboration, reconciliation and a shared commitment to national development.

Darazo therefore urged leaders across political and regional divides to put the country’s interests above personal or partisan considerations.

“Nigeria needs every hand on deck. Supporting President Tinubu’s peace agenda is supporting the nation. If our elders stand together, Nigeria will stand stronger,” he said.

Nigeria Moves Closer to Digital Trade Era as National Single Window Launch Nears

0

Nigeria has intensified preparations for the rollout of its National Single Window Initiative, with nationwide sensitisation sessions held for stakeholders in the trade and logistics sector ahead of the March 27, 2026 launch.

The engagement programme, coordinated by the National Single Window Secretariat in collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service, took place in major commercial centres including Lagos, Port Harcourt and Kano.

The outreach campaign is designed to prepare key players in Nigeria’s trade ecosystem for the new reform, which is expected to transform how cross-border trade and business transactions are conducted in the country.

The sensitisation sessions brought together Customs officers and a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including freight forwarders, port operators, exporters, importers, and representatives of the organised private sector. The initiative is part of the Federal Government’s effort to create a technology-driven trade environment that reduces delays, improves transparency, and enhances Nigeria’s competitiveness in global commerce.

Each city hosted a two-day engagement programme. The first day focused on operational readiness for Customs officers, including platform integration and inter-agency collaboration. The second day brought together private sector stakeholders across the trade value chain.

Speaking during the sessions, Director of the National Single Window Secretariat, Tola Fakolade, said the sensitisation drive was crucial to ensuring both government officials and private sector operators are prepared for the transition to a digitally integrated trade system.

“The National Single Window is not just a technology platform; it is a transformational reform designed to simplify trade processes, eliminate duplication, and significantly reduce the time it takes to complete import and export transactions,” Fakolade said.

He added that the platform had reached an advanced stage of readiness ahead of the scheduled launch, noting that extensive testing and consultations had already been carried out.

“We are fully prepared for the March 27 go-live. What we are doing through this sensitisation is to ensure that every stakeholder understands how the platform works and how it will benefit Nigeria’s trade ecosystem,” he said.

Fakolade also addressed concerns about the relationship between the new system and existing digital platforms, particularly the Customs Service’s B’Odogwu platform.

According to him, the National Single Window will work alongside the Customs system rather than replace it, serving as a central digital hub connecting multiple government agencies involved in trade regulation.

The integration, he explained, will allow traders and regulators to interact with different government agencies through a single digital entry point, eliminating repetitive documentation and reducing bureaucratic bottlenecks.

The sessions recorded strong participation from major trade associations, including the National Association of Government Approved Freight Forwarders, the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents, and the Importers Association of Nigeria.

Leaders of the associations welcomed the initiative and commended the government for engaging stakeholders ahead of its implementation, noting that collaboration between public institutions and the private sector would be critical to the success of the platform.

Private sector participants—including importers, exporters, logistics operators and trade facilitators—also took part in demonstrations and interactive sessions explaining how the system will streamline trade processes such as permit approvals and regulatory compliance.

The National Single Window initiative is widely expected to mark a major milestone in Nigeria’s trade modernisation efforts, positioning the country for faster and more efficient participation in global commerce.

2027: Obi, Atiku, Amaechi Unite on ADC Platform to Challenge Tinubu, APC

0

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has revealed that its leading presidential hopefuls Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi are working together with a shared objective of unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general election.

The disclosure was made in Abuja during the unveiling of 1ADC, a political movement designed to mobilise party members and supporters across the country ahead of the next presidential race.

Party leaders said the initiative is aimed at uniting supporters of the three prominent politicians under one political structure as opposition forces begin early preparations for the 2027 contest.

National Coordinator of the 1ADC Movement, Lauretta Onochie, said the movement was created to foster unity within the party and demonstrate that political alliances are possible despite differences.

“We are here to inform the world, the state and our political leaders that we have come together to be united as one ADC,” Onochie said at the unveiling.

According to her, the platform will enable supporters of Obi, Atiku and Amaechi to work collectively in confronting the APC at the polls.

“Because Nigerians are asking an important question as to whether political parties can ever come together and unite, today we are here to say it is possible and we are taking that lead,” she added.

Onochie acknowledged that disagreements are inevitable in political organisations but emphasised that the party’s broader objective must take precedence over personal ambitions.

“We will unite after primaries, we will heal the wounds and we will not encourage anti-party activities. We will reach the grassroots, the poor and the young, and we will be a party for everyone. We will be strong, disciplined and united,” she assured.

The former National Chairman of the ADC, Ralphs Nwosu, said the adoption of the party as a coalition platform was intended to provide Nigerians with an opportunity to “reclaim their country.”

“We say we don’t want to continue complaining. It is not about who is the National Chairman or Secretary. The leadership of the ADC has been very deliberate. They don’t want to stand on anybody’s face. They want Nigerian citizens to take over the party,” Nwosu said.

He also described the party’s current National Chairman, David Mark, as a “military tactician” who would not be intimidated by political pressure.

Nwosu added that the party’s digital membership registration campaign has attracted significant interest nationwide, claiming that millions of Nigerians have already signed up within a few months.

According to him, the ADC is evolving beyond a traditional political party into what he described as a “citizens’ movement,” aimed at fostering unity and offering Nigerians an alternative platform ahead of the 2027 elections.

Yuletide Airfare Hike: FCCPC Moves to Sanction Airlines, Orders Possible Refunds for Passengers

0

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has concluded investigations into the sharp increase in domestic airline ticket prices during last year’s Yuletide season and is preparing to sanction airlines found culpable.

Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the FCCPC, Tunji Bello, disclosed in Abuja on Thursday that the commission’s final report will soon be released, alongside penalties that could include mandatory refunds to affected passengers.

“We have carried out a full investigation into the issue of airlines during the Yuletide period. The final report will be published soon, and where refunds are necessary, they will be demanded,” Bello told journalists.

According to the FCCPC’s preliminary findings, airline ticket prices that typically ranged between ₦145,000 and ₦150,000 surged to between ₦405,000 and ₦600,000 during the Christmas travel period.

The commission noted that the increases occurred despite relatively stable aviation fuel costs, government charges and foreign exchange rates.

“Our preliminary report already finds the airlines wanting in that regard,” Bello said. “We are considering a situation where they will refund the excess charges to passengers, which we believe they exploited.”

Part of the commission’s report suggests the price spikes may have resulted from arbitrary pricing practices or potential collusion among airlines.

Route-level analysis revealed that fare increases were closely linked to reduced seat availability during predictable seasonal demand peaks.

On busy routes such as Abuja–Port Harcourt, fares during peak travel periods were several times higher than those recorded after the festive rush.

The report stated that on some routes, the price difference for a single ticket reached as high as ₦405,000, while median fares across several corridors rose significantly during the holiday travel window.

Beyond the aviation sector, Bello warned petroleum marketers against exploiting global oil market fluctuations triggered by tensions in the Middle East.

He said FCCPC teams are already monitoring fuel prices and other essential commodities to prevent unjustified increases.

“If suppliers reduce prices by ₦100 or ₦200 and some filling stations are still selling for ₦1,500 per litre or higher, we will ask questions and take the necessary steps,” he said.

The FCCPC boss also revealed that the energy, financial technology and telecommunications sectors account for the highest number of consumer complaints nationwide.

In cities such as Lagos, Abuja, Ibadan and Kaduna, most complaints relate to digital lending platforms, telecom charges, electricity billing and banking transactions.

Electricity complaints are particularly widespread, especially regarding estimated billing and inconsistent supply.

Bello noted that consumers placed on Band A electricity tariff, who pay higher rates for improved service, must receive the promised minimum of 20 hours of power supply daily.
“If they are paying the higher tariff, they must receive value for their money, and we are holding the companies accountable for that commitment,” he said.

FCCPC officials revealed that between March and August 2025 alone, the commission resolved over 9,000 complaints, recovering more than ₦10 billion for Nigerian consumers.

The agency receives over 25,000 complaints annually, many of which lead to refunds or replacement of defective goods after mediation.

Bello urged Nigerians to formally document and report violations of consumer rights rather than complaining informally.

“Effective regulatory action depends on documented complaints,” he said, encouraging consumers to submit cases through the commission’s digital platforms and other official channels.
