Lucia Onabanjo Funeral: Why Drag Otunba Gbenga Daniel into a Seating Saga He Knows Nothing About?

By Seunmanuel Faleye

There is an old saying that if you want to hide something from a black man, put it in a book. In our contemporary reality, if you want to obscure the truth, simply wrap it in a viral narrative and let social media do the rest.

This is precisely what has happened with the controversy surrounding the burial service of late Chief (Mrs.) Lucia Onabanjo, wife of the first civilian Governor of Ogun State, a controversy that has inexplicably dragged in a name that had no business being mentioned.

Otunba Gbenga Daniel attended a funeral to pay his last respects. What should have been a straightforward act of honouring a departed matriarch has been twisted into a narrative that seeks to position him at the centre of a non-existent power play.

But here is the question that deserves an answer; why? Why must a man who simply sat where he was directed become a character in a drama he never auditioned for? Why must his name be weaponised to give currency to stories he had no hand in crafting? These go to the heart of what is wrong with our public discourse today.

Let us examine what actually transpired. At that church service, Otunba Daniel was seen occupying a seat clearly marked for him. He was not involved in any discussions about seating arrangements. He did not approach protocol officers or make demands about where anyone else should sit. He simply showed up, took his place, and fulfilled his obligation as a mourner.

Interestingly, those who were present have confirmed that Senator Iyiola Omisore was already seated in the church before Daniel arrived. The seat adjacent to Daniel’s was designated for the Head of Service. If Omisore later occupied that seat when the Head of Service did not appear, that decision was his alone. To suggest that Daniel had anything to do with it is to engage in the kind of speculative journalism that does a disservice to everyone involved, and more importantly, to the memory of the deceased.

This incident, however, points to a deeper issue that has become characteristic of public events in Ogun State. There appears to be a recurring pattern where protocol, the delicate art of according proper recognition, is either misunderstood or deliberately disregarded by those charged with organising state functions. This is particularly unfortunate when the occasion is meant to honour a figure of her stature.

This is not an isolated observation. The opening ceremonies of the last Gateway Games come to mind as another instance where protocol seemed to take a backseat. When such patterns emerge repeatedly, it ceases to be a series of unfortunate coincidences and begins to look like a system of approach.

The consequence is that individuals who have contributed significantly to the state find themselves in uncomfortable positions at events where they should be accorded due respect. Some have responded by quietly withdrawing, choosing only to honour functions where they receive proper invitations. This quiet withdrawal speaks volumes, even if it goes unremarked upon by those who prefer sensational headlines to substantive reporting.

What we are witnessing in the aftermath of this burial is not journalism. It is opportunistic narrative-building. Stories are being crafted not to inform the public but to serve political ends. Facts are being arranged and rearranged like furniture in a room, not to reflect reality but to create a particular impression.

And in this arrangement of facts, Otunba Gbenga Daniel’s name has been dragged in, not because he did anything, but because his name carries weight. Because invoking him adds credibility to otherwise questionable narratives. Because in the economy of viral content, a familiar name is currency.

This must be resisted. Not because Otunba Daniel is beyond criticism or above scrutiny. Every public figure must be accountable for their actions. But when a man is implicated in a matter where his only action was sitting on a labelled chair, we have crossed the line from legitimate public interest into character assassination by association.

The deceased deserved better than to have her funeral become the backdrop for political point-scoring. The mourners deserved better than to have their solemn gathering dissected for propaganda purposes. And certainly, individuals who attended in good faith deserve better than to have their names dragged through the mud of social media speculation.

What happened at that church was simple: a former governor attended the burial of Ogun State’s maiden First Lady, sat where he was directed, and left. Everything else is noise manufactured by those who have convinced themselves that every public event must be interpreted through the lens of political rivalry.

Perhaps it is time for those who organise state functions to take notice. Perhaps it is time for protocol to be handled with the seriousness it deserves. Perhaps it is time for all of us to remember that funerals are for honouring the dead, not for settling scores or advancing political narratives.

Until then, the least we can do is refrain from dragging innocent names into controversies they never created. The least we can do is demand that those who craft narratives provide evidence, not just insinuation. The least we can do is remember that behind every name dragged through the mud is a human being who simply came to pay their final respect, sat down, and left.

May her soul rest in peace.

Shettima to Lead FG Delegation to Kano Over Singer Market Fire, Tinubu Pledges Support

Shettima Heads to Kano as FG Moves to Support Singer Market Fire Victims
Vice President Kashim Shettima will on Monday lead a high-powered Federal Government delegation to Kano State to commiserate with victims of the devastating fire at Singer Market.

The delegation, departing Abuja, is expected to deliver President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s condolences to traders who reportedly lost billions of naira in the weekend inferno that razed large sections of the market, widely regarded as Nigeria’s largest food market.

According to a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the delegation will also announce financial assistance to help affected traders recover from their losses.

The Federal Government is further expected to collaborate with Kano State authorities to ensure the swift reopening of the market and restoration of commercial activities.

Members of the delegation include Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas; Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin; Senator Kawu Ismaila; and Rep. Abubakar Kabir Bichi, Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation.

Also on the team are the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Bernard M. Doro, and the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Zubaida Umar.

President Tinubu had earlier held a telephone conversation with Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to receive a situation report and express sympathy to the affected traders and residents.

The fire, which broke out on Saturday evening and continued into Sunday morning, caused extensive destruction. The incident occurred barely two weeks after a previous blaze destroyed dozens of shops at the same market.

Expressing concern over the recurrence, the President directed a comprehensive investigation into the causes of the fires, noting that such disasters repeatedly leave traders in distress.

Authorities say further details on relief measures and the investigative process will be made public in due course.

Nigeria, Angola Formalise Visa Exemption for Diplomatic Passport Holders

Nigeria and Angola have signed a landmark visa exemption agreement for holders of Diplomatic and Official/Service Passports, signalling a renewed push to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two African nations.

The draft agreement was signed on February 15, 2026, on the sidelines of the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa.

Nigeria’s delegation was led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, while Angola was represented by its Minister of International Relations, Tete Antonio, according to a statement by ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Ebienfa.

Tuggar described the agreement as both long overdue and timely, noting that it would significantly ease travel procedures for government officials and strengthen diplomatic engagement.

According to him, the visa exemption arrangement will facilitate smoother official exchanges, deepen institutional cooperation, and create broader opportunities for joint initiatives and dialogue by removing administrative bottlenecks for authorised officials.

He stressed that Nigeria–Angola relations are anchored in a shared history, particularly during Angola’s ideological conflict between the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) and the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA).

Tuggar recalled Nigeria’s principled stance during that era, highlighted by the historic “Africa Has Come of Age” speech delivered by former Head of State, Murtala Muhammed, which underscored Nigeria’s solidarity with Angola’s liberation struggle.

Ambassador Tete Antonio described the agreement as more than a procedural diplomatic step, calling it a substantive reaffirmation of the shared values and trust that have defined relations between both countries.

He noted that by eliminating visa requirements for diplomatic and official/service passport holders, the agreement would modernise the longstanding partnership, enhance policy coordination, and foster stronger institutional collaboration.

Antonio also expressed appreciation for Nigeria’s historic role in supporting Angola’s anti-colonial struggle, emphasizing that the legacy of solidarity laid the foundation for today’s robust bilateral ties.

The newly signed agreement is expected to open fresh avenues for closer official engagement, strengthen diplomatic chemistry between both governments, and translate decades of goodwill into practical, forward-looking cooperation. Read More

Presidency Demands Probe as El-Rufai Admits Intercepting Ribadu’s Call

The Presidency has called for an investigation into former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai following his public admission that he accessed an intercepted telephone conversation involving the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

El-Rufai, during an interview on Arise Television, disclosed that he and his associates listened to a phone call allegedly made by Ribadu directing security operatives to arrest him.

“He made the call because we listened to their call,” El-Rufai said, adding that “someone tapped his phone” and relayed the information to him. When reminded that such action was illegal, the former governor reportedly acknowledged the illegality but insisted “government thinks they are the only ones that listen to calls, but we also have our ways.”

Reacting, Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, questioned whether El-Rufai possessed wire-tapping facilities and called for a thorough probe.

“This should be thoroughly investigated, and punishment meted out. El-Rufai is not too big to face the wrath of the law,” Onanuga wrote on X.

Senior presidential aide Temitope Ajayi also expressed shock, suggesting that if invited for questioning, El-Rufai might frame it as political persecution.

Social commentator Reno Omokri described the alleged interception as criminal and dangerous, warning that unauthorised surveillance could threaten national security and democratic institutions, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“Tapping a phone call without a court order is a crime. Admitting it on live television is callous,” Omokri stated, questioning who else may have been targeted.

Human rights activist Abba Hikima similarly warned that any unauthorised monitoring of the NSA’s communications undermines public trust and the integrity of Nigeria’s security architecture.

Amid the controversy, former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje rejected allegations linking him to the disappearance of social critic Abubakar Idris, popularly known as Dadiyata.

Through his aide, Ganduje described the claims as reckless and politically motivated, insisting that responsibility for security in Kaduna at the time rested with the El-Rufai administration.

He called for scrutiny of El-Rufai’s statements and urged that any claims be backed by verifiable evidence rather than political rhetoric.

Dadiyata, a lecturer at Federal University Dutsin-Ma, was abducted in Kaduna in August 2019, and his whereabouts remain unknown.

Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani called for a comprehensive investigation into El-Rufai’s eight-year tenure, alleging financial mismanagement, rights violations and insecurity during the period.

He urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to examine activities between 2015 and 2023, describing the era as one of hardship and repression.

Human rights defender Steven Kefas also accused El-Rufai’s administration of orchestrating his arrest in 2019, alleging that security personnel tracked and detained him without a warrant. Kefas, who now lives in exile, claimed public exposure of his arrest prevented a worse outcome.

The controversy has intensified political tensions, with calls growing for law enforcement agencies to clarify whether any illegal surveillance occurred and, if so, who authorised it.

As reactions mount, the spotlight remains on whether authorities will open a formal investigation into the former governor’s televised remarks — a development many observers say could test the country’s commitment to rule of law and national security safeguards. Read More

The International Committee of AFRIMA, in partnership with the African Union Commission, has launched a strategic continental tour aimed at deepening collaboration and strengthening stakeholder engagement ahead of the milestone ceremony.

The campaign train first berthed in Dar es Salaam, where a high-level Media and Stakeholders’ Parley brought together award-winning artists such as Juma Jux and Folex, alongside industry executives and government officials. Discussions focused on assessing AFRIMA’s impact and promoting stronger continental collaboration within Africa’s music ecosystem.

The spotlight now shifts to Abidjan, where another major Media and Stakeholders’ Parley is scheduled for February 17, 2026. The Ivorian capital is expected to host leading artistes, regulators, music executives, and cultural stakeholders from across Francophone West Africa and beyond.

Among those billed to attend are Côte d’Ivoire’s 9th AFRIMA winners, including Didi B, who won Best African Lyricist/Rapper; Milo, Best Male African Inspirational Music; Team Paiya, Best African Duo, Group or Band; and Morijah, Best Female African Inspirational Music. Algerian star DJ Moh Green, winner of the Best African DJ Award, is also expected at the event.

The parley will provide a platform for past winners and industry leaders to share insights on AFRIMA’s role in promoting African culture, identity, and global recognition.

Speaking ahead of the Abidjan engagement, Guy Neza, an Ivorian member of the AFRIMA International Jury, described the event as a strategic build-up to the 10th edition. He noted that the initiative aims to enhance collaboration with governments and industry stakeholders across the Francophone region, while expanding AFRIMA’s capacity as a globally respected awards institution.

Neza also highlighted the transparency of the awards’ selection process, explaining that it begins with entry submissions, followed by nominations by a 13-member International Jury, and culminates in voting by the Academy of Voters and fans.

As anticipation builds, the 10th edition of AFRIMA is shaping up not just as a celebration of music, but as a continental movement reinforcing Africa’s cultural influence on the global stage. Read More

The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has formally endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in 2027, in a dramatic political gathering that also witnessed the defection of two senators and three members of the House of Representatives from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The endorsement took place at Nelson Mandela Freedom Park, Osogbo, during a reception organised for the defecting lawmakers.

‘PDP, Accord Now Carcasses’ — Oyetola
Addressing party faithful, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, declared that the PDP and Accord Party in Osun had lost political relevance.

“PDP and Accord are now dead. They are confused, and the reason is that both parties combined are now carcasses. We will vote in 2026 and win,” he said confidently.

Oyetola defended the party’s endorsement of Tinubu, arguing that the president’s economic reforms had repositioned Nigeria. According to him, foreign exchange stability has improved, fuel importation has reduced due to strengthened local refining capacity, and over $50 billion in investment commitments signal renewed global confidence. He also cited the new ₦70,000 minimum wage and the expansion of student loan access to more than 200,000 beneficiaries as milestones of the administration.

“We proudly and confidently endorse President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in 2027 to consolidate these gains and secure lasting prosperity,” Oyetola stated.

‘Enough of Dancing’ — APC Guber Candidate
The APC governorship candidate in Osun, Bola Oyebamiji, popularly known as AMBO, called for unity ahead of the 2026 governorship election.

“As we look toward the 2026 and 2027 elections, unity within our ranks is non-negotiable,” he said, urging members to intensify grassroots mobilisation.

Addressing the defectors, Oyebamiji added: “Your decision to formally join us today reinforces the momentum we are building. In Osun, enough of dancing; it is time to work.”
Wave of Defections Strengthens APC
Among the defectors welcomed into the APC were Senators Francis Fadahunsi (Osun East) and Olubiyi Fadeyi (Osun Central), alongside Reps Oluwole Oke, Sanya Omirin, and Taofeek Ajilesoro.

Osun APC Chairman Tajudeen Lawal assured both old and new members of equal treatment, stressing the party’s resolve to reclaim the state in 2026.

The motion endorsing Tinubu’s second term was moved by Chief Sola Akinwumi and seconded by Chief Shuib Oyedokun, while APC National Secretary Senator Ajibola, who presided over the programme, reiterated that the party was positioned to dominate future elections in the state.

Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Senator Fadahunsi pledged loyalty to the APC and vowed to work toward securing victory in the 2026 Osun governorship race and Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.

With high-profile defections and a strong endorsement message, the Osun APC appears to be consolidating its base ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Head coach Moses Aduku’s side, who narrowly won the first leg 1-0 in Abeokuta last weekend, showed composure and clinical finishing to wrap up the tie in Dakar.

The breakthrough came early in the 18th minute when Kindness Ifeanyi—the heroine of the first leg—rose highest to powerfully head home and give Nigeria a crucial away lead.

The Falconets doubled their advantage in the 68th minute through another set-piece masterclass: Precious Oscar connected cleanly from a corner to make it 2-0 on the night and 3-0 on aggregate.
