Maina reveals 7th Senate aiding pension thieves

0

Embattled ex-Chairman of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, Alhaji Abdulrasheed Maina, has accused the 7th Senate, led by David Mark, of aiding pension thieves.

The accusation letter he wrote the Senate on June 19, 2015 was said to have leaked on Friday

According to the letter, Maina alleged more than N3 trillion were trapped in 97 pension offices before he fled the country.

Maina who is facing an allegation of N2 billion fraaud also said in the letter that he was seeking a review of his case.

It was however reported in Saturday PUNCH that the law firm representing Maina, Messrs Mamman Nadir & Co., on 36 Ali Akilu Road, Kaduna confirmed the authenticity of the leaked letter.

The letter, referenced PRTT/PEN/NASS/SEN/16/ VOL1/05, was channelled through Senator Nneji Achonu’s (Imo North Senatorial Zone) office to the Senate President.

The letter addressed to Senator Saraki was titled ‘Pension Reform Task Team: Appeal for Review of Investigation Probe by Senate Joint Committee on Establishment and Public Service and States and Local Government Administration 2011-2013.’

Maina, who recently returned to self-exile following a public uproar against his alleged reinstatement as a director in the Ministry of Interior while he was still wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged embezzlement of N2 billion pension funds, claimed in the letter leaked to newsmen in Kaduna yesterday that his task team, which began operation in January 2011, saved about N1.6 trillion from pension thieves.

“We used financial intelligence skills to achieve ground-breaking achievements in our assignment. We recovered and saved cash and properties worth over N1.6trillion,” he said.

According to him, the team’s efforts led to the arrest of 46 persons and firms involved in looting pension funds, who were handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and whose trials were still ongoing.

The more than N3 trillion Maina said was waiting to be recovered from 97 government agencies was as at 2015.

The leaked letter indicated that the pension boss resurfaced in the country shortly after the inauguration of President Muhammadu Buhari on May 29, 2015.

The letter reads: “We, members of Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), wish to use this medium to apologise for our little late response to reaching back to you.

“We had to put the issues together and source for appurtenant materials. We appreciate your understanding sir.

“As a refresher, the PRTT was inaugurated on 10th June, 2010 by the immediate past administration of Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan GCFR, with a clear mandate to restructure the Head of Service Pension Office, Police Pension Office, among others.

“We did our utmost with precision and national interests as our guiding principles

“The PRTT took off effectively by January 2011.

“We used financial intelligence skills to achieve ground-breaking achievements in our assignment.

“We recovered and saved cash and properties worth over N1.6 trillion.

“Our efforts led to the arrest and prosecution of 46 persons/firms involved in looting of pension funds which we handed to the EFCC. The trials are still ongoing.

“As it is, there is a leakage of N256 billion monthly from the current IPPIS, which needs to be blocked urgently.

“We are also aware of some government hidden accounts which needs to be mopped up.

“We can be used to engage any department of government in sanitising the financial workflow to avoid loose ends that remain susceptible to leakages.

“Based on the revelations of massive/monumental fraud and outright stealing of pension funds, which was brought to public attention by the PRTT, the 7th National Assembly by resolution dated 2nd November, 2011 mandated its Committee on Establishment and Public Service, State and Local Government Administration, to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the management and administration of pension funds in Nigeria.

“There was general expectation that the various dimensions of irregularities associated with the management of pension funds in Nigeria would come to an end as a consequence of the investigations being conducted by the Senate Joint Committee.”

Maina maintained that the Senate Joint Committee ended up creating more problems than solutions to the endemic corruption and fraud prevailing in the system because while the Senate haunted them, it favoured the “pension thieves”.

“We became objects of corruption fighting us back. From our first appearance before the Senate committee, it was obvious that the entire exercise conducted by the Committee was geared towards discrediting the PRTT,” the letter stated.

Arguing that before leaving Nigeria, following threats to his life, the PRTT had worked so hard that pension payments stabilised, Maina noted that the biometric system adopted by the team exposed 73,000 ghost pensioners in the office of the Head of Service alone.

“Some pensioners got backlog of about 30 years paid into their accounts. All payments were ordered under the signature of the Head of Service monthly,” he said.

He added: “However, the PRTT regrets to observe that rather than achieving the objectives of the spirit and its mandate, which in our view includes but not limited to identifying those responsible for the culture of fraud that characterised the system and bringing them to book, the Senate Joint Committee ended up creating more problems than solutions to the endemic corruption and fraud prevailing in the system.

“In this context, the PRTT, wishes to state without any fear of contradiction that the Senate Joint Committee’s Report submitted, which was subsequently adopted by the 7th Senate but now quashed by the Federal High Court judgement of the 13th March 2013 in favour of the PRTT’s Chairman, not only failed to address the issues at stake but succeeded in misleading the Senate and the generality of Nigerians about the true picture, nature and scope of problems militating against the efficient management and administration of Pension Funds in Nigeria. Copy of said judgement attached and marked “ANNEXURE1”.”

Maina also alleged that shortly after he was forced out, the office of the Head of Service was enmeshed in a N35bn fraud. He added that the ICPC conducted investigation into the matter but regretted that “till date, they are yet to commence the prosecution.”

“Today, it (pension) is worse with the Police pension office where daily so much millions are taken out of pension funds in that office. We have evidence to substantiate this,” he added.

On his dismissal, Maina said the process was concluded under 36 hours without giving him the opportunity to be heard.

The letter said: “As we write to you, Abdulrasheed A. Maina has been dismissed from Civil Service for being absent for three days while his life was under threat following gunshot attack on his person in front of Head of Civil Service Office where his office was located in February, 2013. Attached are copies of letters from Nigeria Police Force. “ANNEXURE 3 (a) and (b)”.

“The Task Team and its leadership were not only denied the opportunity for a fair hearing before being pronounced guilty of all manner of allegations, but even where the Task Team appeared before the Committee, salient facts related to the issues at stake were deliberately ignored.”

He added that an appeal to the 7th Senate for fair hearing was ignored. As a result, the PRTT approached the Federal High Court Abuja in suit number: FH/ABJ/CS/65/2013. He said the court ruled in his favour on 13th March, 2013 noting that till date, the Senate had yet to appeal the judgment of the court.

Maina added in the said letter that; “We are by this letter appealing to the Federal Government in the spirit of CHANGE which the country is witnessing, and the stand of government on corruption, that opportunity be given to us to present the truth about pension management in Nigeria.”

Reacting to Maina’s letter, the Special Adviser (Media) to the Senate President, Yusuf Olaniyonu, said the present Senate leadership ignored it because the last Senate had taken a decision on the pension matter and there was no reasonable ground to review it.      Additional reports from The Capital NG/Saturday Punch

Nigerians lost Nmillions, weep as MMM officially fizzles out

0

Agency Report

Popular ponzi scheme MMM has officially announced a “RESTART” of the system, leaving many Nigerian participants wailing with thousands and millions of Naira trapped in the scheme.

In a message posted on the home page of participants Saturday morning, the scheme said that it had struggled to stay afloat after going on a break in Dec. 2016 but had been forced to do a system restart.

Many of the participants who commented in various MMM Whatsapp groups recounted sadly how they and family members had lost millions to the scheme.

MMM is a ponzi scheme which gained popularity in Nigeria in 2016. It promised to pay participants 30 per cent return on investment every 30 days.

Despite various warnings by the Federal Government and its financial regulators, many Nigerians adamantly went on to participate in MMM.

Recall that in 2016, the Federal Government, through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) warned Nigerians against putting their money in the scheme.

In December 2016, the scheme went on “Pause Mode”, freezing the funds of participants and allegedly bolted with N18 billion but promised to resume payments by January 2017.

MMM kept its promise by resuming in January but it had new rules: 2016 money was to be paid back in percentages of new money “invested”.

This also did not stand the test of time and by July 2017, the scheme went on a semi pause mode when it could not pay withdrawal requests.

While those who lost their money in June/July continued to wait and lament, the ponzi scheme, in a frantic effort to stay afloat, commenced payment of those who “invested” their money in August, promising to backdate the payment to cover those whose money were still pending from June and July.

It even introduced 100 per cent return on investment to encourage more Nigerians to participate in August.

Apparently unable to meet its promises to pay back June/July pledges and faced with more challenges, the ponzi scheme on Saturday announced that it was going on restart, blaming the Nigerian government and the media for its woes which started in 2016.

RESTART

Unfortunately, we were unable to overcome the consequences of the crisis triggered by the authorities and mass media incautious actions at the beginning of this year. Despite all our efforts. The problems have been accumulating and, as a result, we have to announce a restart.

So, there is a restart:

All old Mavros (acquired before this announcement is posted) are frozen. We will gradually buy them back as the System develops.

All transactions with new Mavros (acquired after this announcement is posted) will be carried out on the usual terms with no restrictions.

Some amendments have been made to the rules:

Mavros will now start growing at the moment the request is confirmed (not at the moment it is created, as it was previously).
Consequently, bonuses will start growing at the moment when the main contribution is confirmed (upon which bonuses have been rewarded on).
Mavro-50% for the first contribution will not be available.
We launch three-month contributions of two types: 40% and 50% (see more details in WHAT IS MMM).
We’re confident that this measure (especially paragraphs 1 and 2) will significantly reduce the load on the System while also significantly improving its stability.

As a matter of fact, a restart is not the end of the world, it’s just a restart of the System and nothing more. Continue to provide help and you’ll get it all back (even if you’ve lost something now). It all starts from the beginning. It’s the most opportune time for participating.

We would also like to remind you (just for form’s sake) that everyone had been fully aware of all the risks and had read the WARNING which they had also confirmed by checking the relevant box in the process of registration.

Hoping for your understanding,
MMM Administration

Some of the participants of the scheme expressed regrets for ever joining MMM.

One of the participants (names with held) said that if he had known he would have used his money fro something better rather than investing on the scheme.

“This MMM people are very useless, they just came to dupe us,” he said.

On the promise by the scheme to buy back the debts it owed Nigerians when it restarts, he said: “Restart? who are they restarting with? Nobody will join MMM in Nigeria again”.

“MMM is gone and gone for good,” he said.   NAN

DEBT CRISIS! Benny Peters plans to sell Shell OML29 to offset GTBank huge loan

0

The trading firm, facing high financial exposure, is rallying round to quickly find partners on its OML 29. Nigerian oil firm Aiteo’s 2014 purchase of Shell/Total and ENI’s 45% stake in the prolific OML 29 for $2.58 billion has been a heavy burden to bear The Captal NG reported.

Aiteo, which is also the main operator of the permit, is headed by Benny Peters, a trader with close ties to former Nigerian minister of oil resources Diezani Allison-Madueke (2010-2015). To cope with the strain, as of mid-November the group will bring on Ernest & Young’s former auditor, Bruce Burrows as its CFO.

Burrows was previously head of finance for Seven Energy, and also served as chairman of Rialto Energy which at one time had been active in the Ivory Coast . He will have the thorny task of finding a buyer for part of Aiteo’s assets to lighten the servicing of the company’s debt.

According to our sources, Aiteo may be planning to sell 10% of OML 29 but remain on as operator alongside its other shareholders Taleveras, Tempo Energy, and Nigerian National Petroleum Corp (NNPC), which alone holds 55%.

Peters is also counting on Burrows’ experience to quickly secure a partnership. Until recently, the companies interested in investing in Aiteo had privately spoken of their disapproval of the company’s structure. Under the current organisational chart Peters hold all of the powers and there are no directors for the individual lines of business. Aiteo grew so fast under president Goodluck Jonathan’s era (2010-2015), thanks to oil-for-crude swap contracts, that its current organisation does not reflect the full extent of the group’s activities.

Burrows’ appointment comes after Montenegrin Ratko Knezevic was brought on as Aiteo’s business and capital development director in May this year

Last year, Aiteo had unsuccessfully tried to sell its Nembe Creek Trunk Line connecting OML 29 deposits to the Bonny Crude Oil Terminal (BCOT) operated by Shell . Aiteo has managed to increase output at OML 29 to nearly 90,000 bpd but local populations frequently illegally tap into the Nembe Creek Trunk Line. On some days, losses can be as high as 20,000 bpd. Wole Soyinka goes to Trump’s America; Says, ‘I’ll go in as an alien from outer space’

0

Professor Wole Soyinka is going back to  Donald Trump’s America, less than a year after he tore his Green Card following the election of Donald Trump as the president.

He will be delivering from 14-16  November  the Richard D. Cohen Lectures at Harvard University Centre for African Studies.

“I’ll go in as an alien, an alien from outer space. I love that designation,” Soyinka said in an interview with Financial Times of London published on Friday.

The lectures will be in three parts, under the theme: BEYOND AESTHETICS: Use, Abuse and Dissonance in African Art Traditions

The first part, The Acquisitive Eye: “Oga, I swear it’s Original Fake”will be delivered on 14 November.

On 15 November, Soyinka will speak on : Heirs to the Procreative Deities – the Yoruba at Large. He ends the talks on Thursday 16 November with the third lecture: From Aso Ebi to N****YWOOD.

The venue for the three lectures is  Thompson Room, Barker Center, 12 Quincy Street, Cambridge, MA. Richard Cohen lectures

Before the emergence of Trump, Soyinka had  spent much time in the US, where he taught at a number of universities and lived in California with his wife, Folake.

“My life has been involved with the diaspora on a very personal and visceral level,” he said of his interaction with prominent African-Americans.

Donald Trump’s election marked an end to his US sojourn. In what has become known among Nigerians as “Wolexit”, he cut up his Green Card.

“To have some redneck ride into power on the steed of racism was for me too much,” he told the Financial Times. NAN

PDP Chairmanship: Gbenga Daniel will succeed ―Sultan

0

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III has declared that a front-runner in the National Chairmanship race of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Otunba Gbenga Daniel, will succeed in his bid for the apex seat and that the entire Sultanate is praying for him.

The Sultan said; “Gbenga Daniel has been my very good friend since the days he was governor of Ogun. I remember the very good hospitality he affords me anytime I visit Ogun State.

Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III

“Gbenga Daniel, we all are praying for you to succeed in this quest and I am personally enjoining you not to forget the people when you get there.  You are free to visit me any time.”

Bafarawa who also received Otunba Daniel at his Sokoto residence, expressed his delight at the interest of Otunba Daniel to lead the PDP back to victory in 2019.

According to Bafarawa, he deliberately decided to wait and receive the entourage in Sokoto when he learnt that Daniel chose to start his campaign in Sokoto.

“Many politicians may say something and do another but I’m not like that. We have discussed about your ambition before you came and I want to assure that I will stand by what I told you.”

“The PDP of today is different from the past. There must be a level playing ground where we allow the aspirants to meet the delegates instead of just sitting in Abuja and deciding who to vote for. That will be unfair to the party”.

“Now you are working hard and going round the country campaigning, that is a good development. I know you as a colleague and a friend and I know that if you can lead a complex state like Ogun, you can also lead the PDP”

“You can see that someone who left his home state of Ogun to come and talk to delegates in Sokoto is a serious aspirant.

In his response, Otunba Daniel thanked the former governor for the grand reception and the assurances of his support stating that having consulted with major stakeholders in the party, he is convinced that the electorates are ready for the authentic change. “I have been going round the country and it is obvious that the people are regretting the decision to vote for change and they are ready to ‘change the change’. That is why I am in this race and my simple message is for all of us to start afresh together.”

‘Executive Governor is illegal title!’- New SGF, Boss Mustapha

0

The new Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha says the title “Executive Governor” is illegal.

According to reports, Boss who wants to be simply addressed as SGF and not Excellency, stated ‘’I often hear people say, executive governor, I say look at the constitution, there is nothing like executive governor. It is governor of a state,” he said.

Thecable reported that the man who took over from ‘’sacked’’ SGF Babachir Lawal made the assertion while receiving his handover notes from Habibat Lawal, the acting SGF while Babachir was suspended before the eventual termination of his appointment for a N200m grass clearing contract in Yobe State.

Finally, Apple’s iPhone X hits stores

0

Apple’s flagship iPhone X hit stores around the world Friday, as the company predicted bumper sales despite the handset’s eye-watering price tag and celebrated a surge in profits.

Apple enthusiasts around the globe were lining up to get their hands on the new device which features facial recognition, cordless charging and an edge-to-edge screen made of organic light-emitting diodes used in high-end televisions.

The new gadget marks the 10th anniversary of the first iPhone release and is released in about 50 markets on Friday, starting in Asia and then followed by Europe and the Americas.

The launch came as Apple announced a 19-percent jump in net profit to $10.7 billion in the fiscal fourth quarter to September 30. Revenues were up 12 percent at $52.6 billion.

‘I don’t like to wait’
“If I don’t get it on the first day, I may as well wait until next year’s model — I don’t like waiting,” said Mathew Kam, a 21-year-old film student who has been queuing outside the Apple store on London’s Regent Street for 16 hours. The line had grown to around 100 by 0800 GMT.

In Paris, where a queue had also formed in front of the Apple Store near the French capital’s Garnier Opera house, 21-year-old engineering student Jeremy said he had worked throughout the summer so as to be able to treat himself to a new phone.

He bought the most expensive version of the model costing 1,300 euros, which is more than the minimum monthly wage in France.

In Frankfurt, Germany’s financial capital, Apple fans had been lining up since the early hours.

Timo, 16, said when he arrived at 7:30 am (0630 GMT), the queue already stretched about 100 metres. “I wanted to be one of the first to see it,” he said.

Sold out within minutes
Tim, a teacher, had travelled around 80 kilometres from Heidelberg to collect the phone he had ordered online. “All the reserved models were sold out within 10 minutes,” he recalled.

The new device was not creating such a buzz in the Greek capital of Athens, however, where no queues formed in front of the licensed Apple dealer in the city’s chic Kolonaki quarter. But the company’s marketing officer in Athens, Natalia Revela, insisted she was expecting “strong demand” and a “successful launch” for the phone.

Vyron Hatzidromou, a 38-year-old lawyer, said he “never missed” a new Apple launch. “I always buy the latest models when they come out for the hype and the fun,” he said.

The 1,300-euro price tag is nearly three times the minimum monthly salary in Greece. It was certainly expensive, “but worth it,” Hatzidromou said.

Earlier in Asia, buyers ho had pre-ordered the phone online queued to pick up their new purchases, saying they were willing to pay for what they saw as a landmark model.

“It’s the 10th anniversary phone — anyway, other phones like the Samsung are not much less,” said banker Tony Yeung, 35, as he queued outside the Apple store in Hong Kong’s Festival Walk mall.

‘It’s worth it’
Around 300 customers waited overnight outside Singapore’s Apple store, the first shop in Southeast Asia to sell the new model.

Supakorn Rieksiri and Kittiwat Wang, both 22, said they had flown in from Bangkok on Thursday to pick up pre-orders of two phones each.

“With all the different features like facial recognition and the bigger screen, it’s all quite worth it,” said Rieksiri, adding that the second handset was a gift for his mother.

Apple is setting an ambitious goal for itself to reinvent the smartphone as it strives to fend off fierce competition from rivals, especially in China.

The iPhone is its main profit driver, accounting for more than half its revenues.

Apple closed out its fiscal year with full-year profit of $48.35 billion and revenues of $229 billion.

Smartphone sales climbed by about a million units to 46.7 million in the final quarter of the California company’s fiscal year, which Apple chief executive Tim Cook called a “very strong finish” to 2017. AFP

Zimbabwean police arrests U.S. citizen for ‘insulting’ Mugabe

0

Zimbabwean police detained a U.S. citizen and seized her laptop on Friday on suspicion of calling President Robert Mugabe a “Goblin” on Twitter, the first arrest since the creation of a Ministry of Cyber Security last month, her lawyers said.

The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights said in a statement that Martha O‘Donovan, who works for Magamba TV, which describes itself as Zimbabwe’s leading producer of political satire, was picked up during a dawn raid on her Harare home.

The lawyers said the police were armed with a search warrant linked to an investigation of a case of “undermining authority of or insulting the President”.

Central to their investigation, it said, was a post on O‘Donovan’s Twitter feed referring to a “Goblin” whose wife and step-sons had imported a Rolls Royce, an apparent reference to 93-year-old Mugabe even though he was not named.

Recent online reports have claimed Mugabe’s two adult sons, Robert Jr and Chatunga, have imported at least one luxury vehicle from neighboring South Africa.

O‘Donovan’s Twitter account was locked on Friday but a photograph on her home page referred to #ShutdownZimbabwe2016, a series of protests in 2016 that rattled Mugabe’s government and elicited a fierce crackdown on the streets and online.

Police spokeswoman Charity Charamba said she had no immediate information about the case.

The U.S. embassy in Harare confirmed that an American citizen had been arrested and said it was monitoring the situation closely.

If convicted, O‘Donovan faces a maximum of one year in jail, her lawyer said.

EFCC set to grill ex-SGF Lawal over contract scandal, mismanagement of funds

0

Five Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) detectives are to investigate allegations against ex-Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir David Lawal.

The team, which was formed yesterday, expects Lawal to respond to eight posers.

Lawal may be invited for interrogation alongside seven others.

Also, the anti-graft agency yesterday grilled former Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam for about nine hours over alleged N23billion election bribe, which was traced to a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke.

According to a source, the Special Investigative Committee will invite Lawal after the preliminary review of the reports of the Presidential Investigative Committee, which was headed by Vice -President Yemi Osinbajo and the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on Mounting Humanitarian Crisis in the Northeast, led by Senator Shehu Sani.

It was learnt that Lawal is being probed for alleged, violation of Public Procurement Act, abuse of office and mismanagement of funds.

The source said: “Our team is set and we have isolated eight issues for Lawal to respond to.

“Both Osinbajo’s Committee and the Senate Ad hoc Committee recommended the prosecution of all those involved in the alleged contract scam in the Presidential Initiative in the Northeast.”

A document obtained last night revealed the areas to be clarified by Lawal, some companies and PINE officials. They are:

Why did PINE pay 95%-100% contract sums for projects yet to be executed?
How much was PINE’s contributions to two conferences on rebuilding the Northeast?
What informed the award of and purported payment of a N223million consultancy contract for the removal of invasive plant species in Komadugu, Yobe Water Channels to the ex-SGF’s company?
Why was Section 43(iii) and (iv) of the Public Procurement Act 2007 ignored by PINE?
Could it be true that all the contracts awarded by PINE had no direct bearing to the needs of the Internally Displaced Persons?
Who recommended the engagement of Rholavision Engineering Limited belonging to a then serving government official, Babachir Lawal?
Is it true that Rholavision was incorporated in 1990 to carry out ICT services instead of agro services?
Was Lawal a signatory to Rholavision’s account as at the time of the award of the consultancy contract? Was he a director of the same firm till September 2016 while in office as SGF?
The EFCC yesterday grilled ex-Governor Suswam for nine hours on the over N23.9billion poll bribery scam involving a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke.

A source in the EFCC said: “Suswam was invited for interrogation on the poll bribery scandal. He came around 9am and as at 7pm, he was still with us.

“We have grilled him for about nine hours to explain his roles in the scam. It is not yet clear if he will be detained or released on bail.”  The Capital NG

Interview: APC government is a PDP government – Sule Lamido

0

The Premium Times NG Interview

“APC is a house which is rented for anybody who wants to be there for a while…”

A former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido, recently wrote members of the Peoples Democratic Party on his intention to seek the presidential ticket of the party for the 2019 General Election.

In this interview with PREMIUM TIMES Hausa, Mr. Lamido explained why he wants Nigerians to consider him a better alternative to incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress.

PT: Just about two weeks ago, Nigerians were made aware of your letter to PDP faithful, where you formally disclosed your interest in the presidential ticket of the party. Why did you take that approach?

LAMIDO: African party draws its kind of authority, supremacy and its goodwill from the supporters. In whatever the party does, party faithful are very important. So by my political culture, tradition and political upbringing, the party is very critical. So I said that for us to be able to pull Nigeria out of this political despondency, political ambivalence and political fear, we must first of all intimate these to the party faithful. That means each card carrying member in Nigeria should be informed that I am running.

It is a kind of family affair that I’m offering myself. So if they find that I’m worthy, because I believe that we share the same concern for this country, we also share the same vision.

You see, the way things are in this country, APC cannot keep Nigeria united. I am not being critical, but if you analysed what is going on today, compared to three years ago, you can see the concern in Nigeria.

I also know that many others will also join the race. But what is important for us to know is that, in whatever we do, we restore that thing called trust in the party. We should also put Nigeria first.

At the end, whoever should emerge from the party as candidate after primaries should be a candidate who is owned by PDP, who knows PDP and who PDP people knows.

We told them look, what we are facing in PDP may likely endanger Nigeria’s stability and security in future. It is beyond PDP.

The party must meet at least quarterly under the constitution of the party. But the party did not meet for the whole year under Bamanga Tukur. So if the party did not do things right, there will be a problem, the government will lose.

Somehow, others left in the process. We lost five governors, some parliamentarians, some key members of our party joined other parties.

Now, having gone where they went, have they got comfort? Have they been consoled? Have they been rescued from what they were running away from? Let them come back. They are most welcome. They are coming back to their own party which they left. PDP is their home. But APC is a house which is rented for anybody who wants to be there for a while.

Atiku, Saraki and all of them are most welcome back. Because they are all PDP invention, they are all PDP children, they are all our own material, no matter where they go, their political DNA is PDP. No matter how they tried to run away, you cannot run away from your soul.

About giving conditions, I don’t think my brother Atiku was giving any condition. Who gave him such conditions? They are welcome back to where they are cherished, where they are admired, where they were made what they are.

But they are there now. Look at the kind of indignation and insults they are going through. Everyday Lai (Minister of Information and Culture, Mohammed) will abuse them, saying PDP is a party of thugs, a party of thieves, party of this, party of that, but they sit down with them. Lai will say they are shameless, but they are there watching.

Whatever they will say against PDP, the APC government is a PDP government. It is our own.

PT: As a Nigerian, what is your concern about what is currently happening under Buhari administration? Will you say it is sad and unfortunate, or are you happy, as failure of a government will be an added advantage to an opposition candidate?

LAMIDO: You see, as a Nigerian and a citizen, I don’t celebrate a government mistake because we are going to pay the consequences of that mistake. So, I am not in any way celebrating APC failure as a government, because the government is not APC personal government, it is the Nigerian government. That government has a duty to perform. Unfortunately they went into the government unprepared.

Because they are unprepared, that is why they must continue churning out lies to mask their failure. During the campaign they kept saying PDP is Boko Haram, we are evil, and we were demonised. Now they are in government, they failed to move away from a political party seeking position to a party as an institution and a government.

But because they have no simple sense of what is known as government and governance, they kept on with the same propaganda. And if you speak about the government which you have the right to speak, the operators and propagandists of the party called APC will mock you. It is very dangerous for a government to be mocking its citizen.

Today in Nigeria, a citizen is mocked for saying his own right about his government. When you speak, they will call you a wailing wailer. Now, if people are wailing because of what they see is wrong, the government should ask, why are they wailing? But instead, they make you a laughing stock. It doesn’t make sense. It means they don’t know what leadership is.

When your children are crying because they are hungry, what will you do? Are you going to provide food for them or you just simply call them wailing wailers?

They are utterly irrational and don’t know what is called leadership. They are simply sitting there on privilege, but they are thinking the government is their own right. Somebody who contributed nothing to the evolution of political Nigeria is today calling the shot in Nigerian government. And the culture of lies became their art of governance.

When President was sick, he was taken abroad. Lai and Adesina were saying he was taking some antibiotics, he is just resting, and he is healthy, bla, bla. But when Buhari came back, he said he was sick. When Yar’Adua was sick, the same Lai and others were demanding for their right to know their president’s health condition, even the way he eats. But now they are in the government, we are now overwhelmed with tonnes of lies.

Look at the issue that billions of dollars of NNPC contract. At the same time ASUU were on strike. Now, if you take just one billion dollars to our universities, it will make sense there. Our roads are now terrible. If you put some reasonable amount there, it will also make sense. Look at Kaduna-Kano road for goodness sake.

The medical doctors are also screaming. If you take something out of that money meant for NNPC contract, it will be OK to stop all these strikes. After budgeting over N3 billion to Aso Rock clinic, they now said there is no even a syringe there.

But they kept on saying we are wailing. Thank God Aisha Buhari is among the wailers, she now wails like me. Even APC is now equally wailing. Nigeria is now a wailing nation.

PT: PDP is preparing for its National Convention. With the crisis of litigation and confusion over chairmanship of the party, will you say that the party has learnt any lesson?

LAMIDO: We are going into an election year, the chairman you elect now more or less merely symbolic. He is a symbol of authority and makes things work. Whoever is elected as the chairman cannot go to, say Niger State, and tell the party delegates to vote Mr. So and So, on account of his instructions as the chairman of the party. He cannot go to Sokoto, Jigawa or any state and assert his authority. It is something to be done collectively.

By now, we have gone a long way; it is going to be less personal in our party affairs. Whoever emerges as the party chairman must rely on the party supporters to guide him and assist him to success.

PT: One of the biggest challenges the next president will face is how to put Nigeria’s economy on the right track. A dollar is about N365, while a litre of petrol is N145. How are you…

LAMIDO: (Cuts in) Ashafa, you are going too academic. The human mind is trained to confront challenges. I have seen several countries that are now something, but they came out from nothing. It is all about ideas, not just mere theories. Many countries with no raw materials, no diamonds are now great nations. Why? Because ideas create wealth. Look at South Korea, they are among the builders of the biggest ships in the world, yet have no iron ore.

This government which calls you a wailer, which divides Nigeria, their chemistry and ideas are zero. In the last two year no significant portions of investment came to Nigeria, nothing. Go to Angola, in one year they got N16 billion investment. Egypt is now a strong economic nation. Look at Rwanda. So no matter how many theories you have, how do you put the Nigerian chemistry right?

So, it is not about how many economic theorists we have. This is a country where Professor Itse Sagay says APC is a party of thieves, the party of people who are very corrupt, and he is serving in this government. Tell me, who will come from Europe and invest?

PT: What is very attractive about village life to a personality like you? Because whenever you are not in Kano, you are always resting in in your village, Bamaina, Jigawa State.

LAMIDO: My father and mother gave birth to me there. No matter what I become in life, even if I become the world president, my root is from that village. My life started from a village; that is why I love my village with passion.

By so doing, the PDP can face Nigerians and say this is what we are giving you, and we are giving you the best. Because I have been saying that we have to do things right, otherwise by 2019, there will be serious problem in Nigeria. PDP is the only party with the capacity, with the cohesion, with political root, with that kind of passion for Nigeria.

Look at the way it was founded in 1998. PDP is not something that fell from the sky. It was as a result of a process of reflection, understanding, and research.

PT: You are one of the engineers and architects of the formation of PDP as a political party. Are there some untold stories about that development which are not yet known by Nigerians?

LAMIDO: I don’t think there are more untold stories of how PDP as a party was formed.

PT: Some of the party members who left PDP are now planning to return, and most of them are people who have presidential ambition. We are specifically told that former vice present Atiku Abubakar will return, but he wants the assurance that he will get the ticket. What do you think?

LAMIDO: Look, at the time they left the party, there were indeed some worries within the party. That kind of worries and concern were raised by the seven governors who formed the nucleus of, not opposition really, but maybe raising the alarm that there is a problem in PDP. In so doing, we went and toured the whole country if you can remember. We told all our political leaders like Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Alex Ekweme, TY Danjuma, Shehu Shagari, Babangida and many others.    Read more  Premium Times
